2004 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY

ID: 2120452

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS:CANISTER

The contact owns a 2004 Land Rover Discovery. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. While driving approximately 35 MPH and depressing the brake pedal, the brakes failed to immediately stop the vehicle. The contact aggressively slammed on the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. Additionally, while driving at various speeds, the vehicle was slightly drifting to the left. The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic, who diagnosed that the EVAP was leaking and needed to be replaced. The EVAP was replaced. The mechanic had not diagnosed the brake failure. The vehicle was picked up, and the dealer informed the contact to drive the vehicle for another 25 miles to see if the check engine warning light would illuminate again. The contact stated that after leaving the dealer, 48 miles later, the check engine warning light illuminated again. The contact called the mechanic, who decided not to inspect the vehicle again, but instead refunded the cost for the previous repair. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 106,683.

STEERING

There is a safety recall for the 2019-2020 Land Rover Discovery models. 414-01 SAFETY RECALL: Startup Battery Ground Stud - Insufficient Ground Contact Land Rover Tech bulletin dated 09 DEC 2020 On July 25 my 2017 Land Rover discovery lost power, instrumentation went haywire, and steering limp as I was making a turn onto US-90. On August 5 it would not start. Eventually jump started it, as the battery did not seem to register to the vehicle. On August 6 it again lost power, drive train went limp, all warnings lit up, and steering died as I was getting onto I-95 On August 7 JLR of Jacksonville informed me they found arching burn marks on the battery ground stud. They knew this as a common issue from the previous Tech Bulletin. The 2017&2018 have the same design as the 2019&2020, why are the 2017&2018 not included in the recall?

POWER TRAIN

Vehicle electronics began going crazy. The instrument cluster and gages just started flashing and pulsating. The transmission and mode selection cluster lit up like a Christmas tree. The engine power and steering went limp. The transmission eventually stuck in drive. This occurred twice while driving on the roadway. The second time I had it towed to the dealership. The dealership found the M6 ground stud to be arching. This same issue is a technical bulletin for the 2019-2020 models, but 2017-2018 which are of the same design and build were left off the recall.

The hood will not open due to a faulty cable. Land Rover issued a TSB - LTB01208NAS4 for years 2017-2018. I have a 2019 with the same issue. Dealer refused to perform the TSB, despite me having the same issue. Uploading the TSB from prior NHTSA complaints. Please help.

TIRES

I was driving on a popular street on [XXXX] which I do all the time. The street is very well maintained. There are very few potholes and no debris in the street. I do know how to dodge pot holes. I was headed south. I left my home early it was [XXX]. I heard a popping noise then the truck dropped. I saw the icon on the dash showing about low tire pressure. I was very scared. There wasn’t much traffic I was able to drive slowly to a business parking lot. When I got out of the truck I saw the big whole in the tire and the back bumper hanging off and sensors hanging down and the paneling around the tire off. I purchased this 2024 Discovery [XXX] it was brand new. I have about 6140 miles on the truck. The truck has never been in service for any problems, other than my key fob was not working correctly. I have never got any warning messages about any tire issues on the truck prior to this incident. I had the truck towed to the dealership where I purchased it from. The service person told me the truck needs to go to the Body shop because it is not drivable. He told me they could put a tire on it but since you can’t drive it. I said why did you tell me about it for when you can’t drive it. I spoke to the owner of the dealership and he said I hit something. I told him I didn’t. There was nothing in the street. No one has taken the tire off to inspect at it. The truck will be sitting at the body shop for 2 weeks until they are able to work on it. The tire size is P185/75R1482S. ENGINE

I am filing this complaint regarding a catastrophic engine failure on my 2017 Land Rover Discovery HSE Luxury with the 3.0L V6 supercharged engine. The failure was caused by a broken timing chain, which resulted in severe internal engine damage. This component failure has been confirmed by an independent Land Rover specialist, and the damaged parts — including the broken chain — are available for inspection upon request. The incident put our safety at risk, as the vehicle experienced sudden loss of engine power while in operation. A complete engine stall, especially in traffic or at highway speeds, could easily lead to loss of power steering and braking assistance, significantly increasing the chance of an accident. Prior to the failure, we noticed several warning signs, including an illuminated check engine light, rough idling, and multiple diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), such as P0018, P0019, P0300, P0304, P0305, and P0306. These symptoms began appearing a few weeks before the engine failed completely, but escalated quickly. To our knowledge, there is no recall or technical service bulletin (TSB) addressing this known issue on this model and engine configuration. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by Land Rover, the police, or any insurance agency, but the independent mechanic confirmed that the failure was internal and directly related to the timing chain system. We are submitting this report in the interest of public safety, as this type of failure on a vehicle with regular maintenance and 140,000 miles should not occur without warning. We believe this may indicate a broader reliability issue with the timing system in these engines and urge the NHTSA to investigate.
