2018 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY Complaints and Recall Information

The 2018 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY has 6 complaints and 23 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report water leaks into the interior causing electrical and safety concerns. There are also complaints of battery warning lights followed by stalling and gear selector malfunctions preventing normal vehicle operation.

Common Issues

  • Stalling after battery warning. Vehicle stalls shortly after the battery warning light illuminates, sometimes even after battery replacement, leaving the vehicle inoperable on the roadside.
  • Water leaks at windshield and roof. Water intrusion occurs through the front windshield and roof areas, flooding interior cup holders and electrical components, leading to malfunctioning controls and safety risks.
  • Windshield detachment. The front windshield can come loose from adhesive, posing a danger if it detaches while driving at highway speeds.
  • Gear selector failure. The rotary gear selector retracts while the vehicle remains in drive, causing a gearbox malfunction warning and preventing vehicle restart.
  • Water damage to electronics. Interior electrical systems suffer damage from water ingress, causing electronic controls to short and malfunction.
  • Mold and corrosion risk. Water leaks lead to humidity buildup, mildew, and mold formation throughout the floorboard, threatening vehicle structural integrity and airbag functionality due to potential electrical damage near the A pillars.

The 2018 Discovery has 23 recalls affecting multiple systems including electrical components, door latches, lighting, and collision avoidance technologies. The recalls address safety and functional defects using software updates and component replacements.

Recalls

  • Rear door latch failure N798. (NHTSA 23V393000) About 29,861 vehicles recalled due to rear passenger doors not properly latching with the UniLatch Keyless Vehicle entry system. Doors may open while driving and instrument cluster warnings may fail. Dealers will disable the KV function free of charge. No "Do Not Drive" advisory.
  • Auto high beam software update N556. (NHTSA 21V117000) Around 26,805 vehicles affected because the automatic high beam system does not notify drivers when high beams activate. This reduces visibility for oncoming vehicles. Dealers will update software free of charge. No "Do Not Drive" advisory.
  • Trailer light malfunction N428. (NHTSA 20V143000) About 1,553 vehicles with low line headlight assemblies recalled because trailer lights may fail when towing and DRLs are active, increasing crash risk. Dealers will update Body Control Module software free of charge.
  • Autonomous Emergency Braking software fix N227. (NHTSA 18V625000) 86 vehicles recalled as the AEB system may silently disable without warning, increasing collision risk. Dealers will update software free of charge.

Owners facing repeated repairs, unresolved safety defects, or recall issues with the 2018 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY may have rights under their state lemon laws. Consulting a qualified attorney can help clarify potential legal options.

LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH

Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Land Rover) is recalling certain 2017-2020 Land Rover Discovery vehicles. The UniLatch Keyless Vehicle (KV) entry function may fail to properly latch the rear passenger doors, which can result in the doors opening while driving. In addition, the instrument cluster open-door warning light may fail to alert the driver of this condition.

Risk: Rear passenger doors that open while driving can increase the risk of a crash. An instrument cluster warning light that fails to alert the driver about unsecured doors can increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS

Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC. (Land Rover) is recalling certain 2018-2020 Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Discovery, and Range Rover Velar vehicles. The Auto High Beam (AHB) system does not indicate through the instrument cluster when the high beams are illuminated automatically. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Risk: The driver may be unaware that the high beams are illuminated, reducing visibility for oncoming traffic, and increasing the risk of a crash.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Vehicle is leaking water from A pillars and it is damaging the vehicles electrical systems. Humidity build up and mildew from the entry of water after a down pour caused mold to build up throughout the entire floor board. Dealer ship needs to address these issues and have a complementary inspection/service to resolve this matter. This can lead to electrical problems and airbag inoperative issues. To conclude this can total the owners vehicle since the fuses sit by the A pillar. Water entry will also cause corrosion to vehicle cause damage and jeopardizing the integrity of the vehicle structure.

VISIBILITY/WIPER

My 2018 Land Rover Discovery started leaking water from the top of the front windshield any time it rained. The water intruded on the interior of the vehicle including, interior windshield, electronics mounted toward the top middle of the windshield, dashboard, seats, and electronics/buttons/controllers on the center console. The vehicle also made a loud "whistling noise" when driven due to an obvious issue with the windshield. I brought the car to the dealer on 1/7/2025. They verified the issue as an ongoing problem with Land Rover windshields leaking, stating many have shorted out the electronic systems on the vehicles due to water damage. They refused to take responsibility for the issue saying there was no formal recall on the vehicle. However, a search on google found that this is an ongoing problem that had been identified on a number of Land Rover vehicles where "water ingress into the passenger compartment or wind noise may be evident". See Bulletin: NAS18.09.004 issued by Jaguar Land Rover North America LLC on 3/23/2020 (listed as an After Sales Bulletin). Obviously Land Rover has been aware of this potentially dangerous situation since 2020 and has chosen NOT to cover the defect in manufacturing/assembly which I was forced to pay for. The cost to repair exceeded $1k out of pocket for an issue that should be a mandatory recall on all affected vehicles. Water making its way into the electronic system of the affected vehicles can result in a potential dangerous driving situation. This is a formal complaint and to put Jaguar/Land Rover North America on notice of a potential hazardous situation for which they refuse to take responsibility.

POWER TRAIN

Pulled out of car wash to drying area. Car was still in D, with foot on brake. After a few moments, auto start/stop triggered shutting the car off, but rotary gear selector retracted while still in D. Would not allow restart as trans still in Drive and dash displayed Gearbox malfunction. After a 15 minute wait for system restart, tried to start to no avail. Had to get Discovery towed to dealer which informed that gear selector failed and needed replacement. Thank goodness I wasn't in a traffic situation. This problem has recalls on other models in same model year. Desire the Discovery (D5) to be included in recall. Car is at 82K miles.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Water leaking from roof, thought it was from the surround sunroof. Could hear air coming from roof. On December 30, 2024, after three weeks of heavy rain, found cup holders filled with water. Car started up, but the round button would not lift up from console next to cup holders. Could not put the car in drive, reverse, or neutral. Had to call for tow truck and take to dealership. Was told that the water damage was not from the sunroof, but in fact, from the front windshield coming detached from the glue. This was a great concern for me, because of the safety issue of not knowing that there was a problem with the 2018 models having this issue. We had done our research in looking up any issues with this car before we bought it. We did not find anything describing this issue. The windshield could have come unattached while driving down the highway at 60-70 mph.
