BACK OVER PREVENTION:SOFTWARE

Volvo Car USA, LLC (Volvo Car) is recalling certain 2021-2025 XC40, 2022 V90, 2022-2025 S90, V90CC, C40, XC60, 2023-2025 S60, V60, V60CC, XC90, and 2025 EC40 and EX40 vehicles. The rearview camera image may not display when the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."

Risk: A rearview camera image that does not display reduces the driver's view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

Volvo Car USA, LLC (Volvo Car) is recalling certain 2023 S60, V60, V60CC, V90CC, XC60, XC90, XC40, and C40 vehicles. A diagnostic error in the Brake Control Module 2 (BCM2) may cause a loss of Antilock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and traction control.

Risk: A reduction in brake support functions can increase the risk of a crash.

STEERING

Volvo Car USA, LLC (Volvo Car) is recalling certain 2019-2022 V60CC, XC60, and XC90 vehicles. During steering gear assembly, double screws may have been assembled on top of each other, which can cause a screw to fall into the gearbox housing.

Risk: A screw inside the gearbox housing can cause the steering wheel to lock up and increase the risk of a crash.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Volvo Car USA, LLC (Volvo Car) is recalling certain 2023 S60, V60CC, XC60, XC90, XC40, and C40 vehicles. A diagnostic trouble code (DTC) may be falsely detected for the emergency call system (e-call) and display "e-Call Service Required" in the driver information module (DIM).

Risk: The false warning message could prevent the detection of an actual e-call system failure, which could delay an emergency response during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

AIR BAGS

Volvo Cars USA, LLC (Volvo Car) is recalling certain 2021 Volvo V60, V60 Cross Country, V90, V90 Cross Country, XC60, and XC90 vehicles. The Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) control unit may not have been properly attached to the car body and may detach during a crash.

Risk: A detached SRS control unit can decrease the performance of occupant protection systems such as air bags, seat belts, and high voltage battery disconnect, increasing the risk of injury during a crash.

SEAT BELTS

Volvo Car USA, LLC (Volvo Car) is recalling certain 2021 XC40, XC 40 Recharge, V60CC, V90, V90CC, XC90, and 2021-2022 V60, XC60, S60 vehicles. The seat belt automatic locking retractors may deactivate early, which can prevent the child restraint system from securing properly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

Risk: An unsecured child restraint system can increase the risk of injury during a crash.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING:FUSES AND CIRCUIT BREAKERS

Volvo Car USA, LLC (Volvo Car) is recalling certain 2019-2020 V90, XC60, S60, V60, V60CC, S90, V90CC, S90L, and XC90 vehicles. The low-pressure fuel pump can blow a fuse and fail.

Risk: Failure of the low-pressure fuel pump can cause a stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE:SOFTWARE:PEDESTRIAN/CYCLIST/OBJECT/OBSTACLE/ RECOGNITION

Volvo Cars USA LLC (Volvo Cars) is recalling certain 2019-2020 S60, V60, V60 Cross Country, S90L, V90, V90 Cross Country, XC40, XC60, and XC90 vehicles. Due to a software/hardware incompatibility, the Automatic Emergency Brake (AEB) system may not detect obstacles and engage as intended.

Risk: If the automatic emergency braking system does not engage as intended, it can increase the risk of a crash.

SEAT BELTS:FRONT

Volvo Cars of N.A., LLC (Volvo) is recalling certain 2008-2016 V70 and XC70, 2007-2016 S80, 2011-2018 S60 and V60, 2016-2018 S60 Cross Country, 2014-2020 S60L, 2009-2015 S80L, 2009-2016 XC60 and 2015-2018 V60 Cross Country vehicles. The flexible steel cable that connects the seat belt to the front outboard seating positions may fatigue over time, causing the seat belt to not secure the occupant in the event of a crash.

Risk: An unsecured occupant has an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash.

ENGINE

The piston rings failed on the 5 cylinder engine. The car is not available for inspection as I got rid of it since it cost 16k to repair. My saftey and many others were put at risk as it would cause the engine to heat up excessively and possibly cause a friction weld of the pistons to the crank. This could imobilize the car during driving and cause a crash. I had the car inspected by a automotive tech and the piston rings were found to be at fault. I also had volvo themselves check snd they came to the same conclusion. They said this was normal on these cars. The warrenty company that I went through said they wouldn't cover piston rings. There was no warning about the piston ring problem other than after the fact when the engine drank all the oil and I got a low oil warning.

STRUCTURE:BODY

Occurring 7/10/2025 WATER LEAK CONCERN:: mildew smell coming from the vehicle, trunk is wet and smelling mildew. have gaps on the rear sunroof glass seal. recommend replacing rear sunroof glass seal, replaced all the drain hoses, remove all the carpets and dry them—water incursion may have affected electrical systems responsible for safety and driving. In Volvo's Service and Parts Business Technical Journal Title: Panoramic sunroof, sealing strip has a gap Ref No: TJ 35503.3.0 the description states: "If the customer complain about that the sealing strip in rear end of panoramic sunroof is too short, or if the short sealing strips cause water leaks into the care, please follow advice under Service. Replace the sealing strips and glue it in each end in according to the method in VIDA." Volvo has been aware of the poor panoramic sunroof design which can result in water incursion into the cabin of the vehicle. At no point has Volvo informed the customer or direct service departments to be proactive in addressing the sealing gaps. There is no mention of any maintenance or concerns in the car manual.

ENGINE

After piston rings were replaced 1 year ago, engine continues to burn too much oil. 4 quarts after 1800 miles.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

CONCERN: Volvo cars’ sunroofs are negligently designed, allowing sunroof drain obstructions to flood the vehicle’s internal electronics. This results in catastrophic and simultaneous system failures, including brake loss, airbag failure, and disabled traction control—posing an extreme and imminent safety risk. SUMMARY OF EVENTS: While driving at speed, I received a “BRAKE FAILURE / PLEASE STOP SAFELY” warning, followed by “ABS / ESC” and “SRS Airbag” failure messages. This led to a sudden and dangerous loss of braking power and airbag system failure, forcing me to pull over in an emergency maneuver. Diagnostics confirmed that water leaked into the car’s critical electronic systems via the sunroof. Like other manufacturers, Volvo sunroofs degrade over time and require drainage. However, Volvo’s design is fatally flawed—clogged drains lead to direct water ingress into the electronics, causing total vehicle system failure while in motion. No warning is provided before catastrophic failure occurs. This is not an isolated case. An identical failure occurred in our second Volvo (2020 V90 Cross Country), owned and operated in California. This proves a systematic design defect—the same critical safety failure occurred in two separate vehicles, in different environments, under identical circumstances. I am deeply alarmed by Volvo’s negligent sunroof drainage design, which puts drivers and the public at severe risk of fatal system failures. I am reporting this to NHTSA because I believe this fundamental design flaw in Volvo sunroofs endangers lives and demands urgent regulatory action. Thank you for your attention to this urgent safety issue.
