2017 VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN Complaints and Recall Information
The 2017 VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN has 12 complaints and 7 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues with power steering failure and airbag system malfunctions. There are also reports concerning timing chain problems and water intrusion through the sunroof.
Common Issues- Power steering failure. The power steering assist disables intermittently, often on startup, requiring multiple attempts to restart the vehicle and restore function.
- Steering rack defects. Failure of the rack and pinion steering gear results in loss of power steering while driving and necessitates replacement of the entire assembly.
- Airbag system malfunctions. The airbag warning light frequently illuminates and airbags may fail to deploy during collisions, posing safety risks to occupants.
- Seatbelt issues. Complaints include seatbelt lockups following accidents that restrict movement and create safety concerns.
- Timing chain and engine repairs. Reports indicate timing chain failures requiring repair or replacement, affecting vehicle operation.
- Water leakage through sunroof. Water intrusion into the vehicle interior after rainstorms has been traced to sunroof drainage system failures, with some cases coinciding with airbag warning lights.
- Vehicle entering limp mode. Engine power loss and ECU warnings related to fuel system faults cause the vehicle to enter limp mode and prevent starting even after repairs.
The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan has seven recalls addressing several safety and regulatory compliance issues. These recalls primarily affect airbag and seatbelt systems as well as regulatory certification and internal modification compliance.
Recalls- Regulatory compliance defects (NHTSA 21V321000). 46 vehicles affected. These internal-use vehicles were sold without confirmation of meeting all Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, possibly increasing risk of injury, crash, or fire. Volkswagen will repurchase affected vehicles.
- Airbag and seatbelt pretensioner failures (NHTSA 16V955000). 5,947 vehicles affected. Front and side airbags along with seatbelt pretensioners may fail to deploy or activate properly in a crash, increasing injury risk. Dealers will replace affected airbags and pretensioners free of charge.
- Driver frontal airbag module defect (NHTSA 18V102000). 3,768 vehicles affected. Driver airbag installed may not comply with FMVSS 208 resulting in inadequate protection during a crash. Dealers will replace the steering wheel and driver airbag module free of charge.
- Regulatory compliance and internal evaluation modifications (NHTSA 18V329000). 252 vehicles affected. Modifications during internal evaluations caused regulatory non-compliance, increasing risk of crash or fire. Volkswagen will repair affected vehicles or repurchase them as needed.
Owners of this vehicle facing repeated repairs, safety defects, or unresolved recall issues may have rights under their state’s lemon law. They should consider consulting an attorney or relevant consumer protection agency about their options.

During a collision in which my vehicle was struck by another driver, the airbag warning light activated, my seatbelt locked in place, and white smoke with a strong electrical smell filled the cabin. No airbags deployed (frontal or side). There is now an "ERROR: Airbag" warning on my dashboard, and the seatbelt is completely locked. The vehicle currently has multiple open safety recalls for airbag systems, including frontal and side/window airbags. I am concerned that these recalls may be related to the malfunction experienced. This failure could have resulted in serious injury if the impact had been greater. I am requesting investigation and confirmation as to whether the non-deployment is related to known defects.

My [XXX] daughter was a front seat passenger in her friend‘s car the 2017 Tiguan when the driver swerved to avoid another car and struck a pole. The damage was primarily on the front passenger side of the car. My daughter hit the windshield. It was broken in two places and she sustained several other injuries. The airbags never deployed. The car was totaled. I’m interested in knowing whether or not it can be determined if the airbags should have deployed and did not, and if the seatbelt worked properly or not, and whether or not you’ve had other complaints about this make and model. My daughter has sustained a concussion and has been out of work since he accident thank you. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

the power steering system fails sometimes. that happens most of the time when you start the vehicle. A red symbol comes on for the power steering locking the steering. When you turn off the vehicle after some minutes you can start the vehicle. sometimes works and sometimes not. you have to try couple times to make it work.
