2003 SUBARU BAJA Complaints and Recall Information
The 2003 SUBARU BAJA has 1 complaint and 8 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to suspension and rust damage, particularly concerning the rear subframe in regions exposed to road salt over time.
Common Issues
- Rear subframe rust. A vehicle failed a state safety inspection due to rust on the rear subframe near the right rear wheel well. This problem is linked to poor paint quality on subframe components in salt-belt states, which could cause subframe failure. The complaint highlights that the vehicle was not included in relevant recalls despite being registered in affected areas.
There are 8 recalls affecting this vehicle, mostly related to the passenger side frontal air bag inflator. The recalls cover vehicles sold or registered in various regions and address risk of inflator rupture during deployment due to propellant degradation from exposure to humidity and temperature fluctuations.
Recalls
- Passenger air bag inflator (NHTSA 14V763000). Affected 4,175 vehicles sold or registered in high humidity areas including Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Florida, and southern Georgia. The inflator may rupture on deployment, sending metal fragments into the vehicle cabin. Subaru replaced the inflators free of charge starting January 2015. No "Do Not Drive" advisory was issued.
- Passenger air bag inflator (NHTSA 15V323000). Covered 432,016 vehicles including 2003-2004 Baja models. Moisture intrusion can cause inflator rupture upon deployment, risking injury or death. The recall started in June 2015 with free replacement of the inflator. It supersedes earlier recall campaigns.
- Passenger air bag inflator (NHTSA 20V001000). Applied to 258,813 vehicles, including 2003-2006 Baja registered in "Zone A" states like California, Florida, and Texas. Inflators replaced under prior recalls may still explode due to propellant degradation. Free replacement began January 2020. No "Do Not Drive" advisory.
- Passenger air bag inflator (NHTSA 20V003000). Affected 111,562 Baja vehicles registered in "Zone C" states like New York, Michigan, and Washington. Same defect as the other 2020 recall for inflator rupture risk. Dealers replaced inflators free of charge starting January 2020.
- Passenger air bag inflator (NHTSA 20V002000). Involved 127,547 Baja vehicles registered in "Zone B" states including Virginia, Ohio, and North Carolina. The inflator may rupture upon deployment due to propellant degradation. Replacement inflators were provided free starting January 2020.
- Passenger air bag inflator (NHTSA 16V358000). Covered 302,127 vehicles including 2003-2006 Baja sold or registered in "Zone A." The inflators may rupture in crashes due to propellant degradation. Subaru started free replacement in August 2016. No "Do Not Drive" advisory was included.
- Passenger air bag inflator (NHTSA 16V361000). Affected 62,940 vehicles including 2003-2004 Baja registered in "Zone C." Injuries may result from metal fragments if the inflator ruptures. Replacement started in August 2016 at no cost to owners.
- Passenger air bag inflator (NHTSA 16V359000). Included 146,010 Baja vehicles registered in "Zone B" states such as Virginia and Pennsylvania. The air bag inflator may rupture in crashes causing metal fragments to strike occupants. Free replacements began August 2016.
Owners encountering repeated repairs for rust-related structural failures or unresolved recall issues involving air bag inflators may have rights under their state lemon law. Consulting a qualified attorney is advisable for assistance with potential claims.

2003 SUBARU BAJA
ID: 2089848SUSPENSION
Vehicle purchased in NC in April, 2025. Registered the vehicle in VA (where I live) a week later once I received the NC title. On [XXX], I took the vehicle to get it inspected. It failed the Virginia State Safety Inspection for the suspension - rust on the rear subframe near right rear wheel well. I found the following information online with regards to this issue: These recalls were issued for the 2003-2006 Subaru Baja , specifically those in the "salt-belt" states for "poor paint quality on the subframe components which led to rusting and potential for subframe failure." The recall numbers that I was able to locate online are O3V-153 and WWM-96. I have already reached out to the Customer Advocacy Department of Subaru of America and they are unable to help me because this particular VIN was not tied to this recall. I am unable to get this vehicle inspected because it does not pass due to this issue. This was a KNOWN issue for this year make and model vehicle in the states in which this vehicle has been titled over the last 20+ years. Because of the issue that was found during my state inspection combined with the fact that this vehicle has been titled in "salt-belt" states, I feel that it should been included in with this recall and as such, repaired by Subaru of America.
