2009 PONTIAC VIBE Complaints and Recall Information

The 2009 PONTIAC VIBE has 1 complaint and 8 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report excessive oil consumption related to a piston ring defect in the Toyota 2.4L engine, which increases the risk of sudden engine failure without warning lights indicating low oil levels.

Common Issues
  • Excessive oil consumption. The Toyota 2AZ-FE engine suffers from rapid oil loss due to a piston ring defect. This causes unpredictable drops in oil levels, raising the risk of sudden engine failure while driving.
  • Warning light absence. No dashboard alerts occur when oil levels get dangerously low, making it difficult for drivers to detect the issue before engine damage happens.

The vehicle has 8 recalls addressing various safety and mechanical systems including accelerator pedals, power window switches, and multiple airbags. These recalls cover risks such as stuck accelerator pedals, power window switch malfunctions that may lead to fire, and defective airbag inflators that could rupture or explode during deployment.

Recalls
  • Accelerator pedal floor mat interference. (NHTSA recall 10V024000, 70,806 vehicles) The accelerator pedal can get stuck wide open due to incompatible or unsecured driver’s floor mats. This may cause very high speeds and difficulty stopping, increasing the risk of crashes. GM advises removing floor mats until repairs are completed.
  • Accelerator pedal friction lever defect. (NHTSA recall 10V018000, 70,806 vehicles) The friction lever in the pedal sensor may become smooth or cause the pedal to stick partially depressed when condensation occurs. This raises the risk of crashes. Dealers will install reinforcement bars to fix the issue free of charge.
  • Power window master switch malfunction. (NHTSA recall 12V491000, over 2.5 million vehicles) Improper lubrication in power window master switches can cause overheating and melting, leading to fire hazards. Switches will be inspected and lubricated or replaced as needed free of charge.
  • Power window switch overheating. (NHTSA recall 15V689000, over 1.8 million vehicles) Inconsistent grease application may expose sliding contacts to moisture and debris causing short circuits and overheating. Dealers will inspect and apply lubricant or replace circuit boards free of charge.
  • Driver side air bag inflator defect. (NHTSA recall 14V168000, 1,486,413 vehicles) The steering column’s flexible flat cable may be damaged when turning, potentially deactivating the driver’s airbag. GM sent notifications and will repair the steering assembly when parts are available.
  • Passenger side air bag inflator rupture risk. (NHTSA recall 17V006000, 577,875 vehicles) The inflator may rupture during deployment due to propellant degradation from humidity and temperature cycling, sending metal fragments into the cabin and increasing injury risk. GM will replace inflators or full modules free of charge.
  • Passenger air bag inflator explosion hazard. (NHTSA recall 18V024000, 628,018 vehicles) Inflators may explode during deployment for similar reasons as the prior recall. GM will notify owners and provide replacement inflators or air bag assemblies at no cost.
  • Passenger air bag inflator rupture. (NHTSA recall 16V340000, 1,754,517 vehicles) In certain regions, inflators may rupture upon deployment due to propellant degradation, risking serious injury from metal fragments. Affected owners will receive notification and free repairs involving inflator or module replacement.

Owners facing repeated repairs for the oil consumption defect, unresolved recall repairs, or safety-related failures should consider their rights under state lemon laws. Consulting with a legal professional specializing in consumer protection may help address ongoing issues.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL

GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009 AND 2010 PONTIAC VIBE VEHICLES. DUE TO THE MANNER IN WHICH THE FRICTION LEVER INTERACTS WITH THE SLIDING SURFACE OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL INSIDE THE PEDAL SENSOR ASSEMBLY, THE SLIDING SURFACE OF THE LEVER MAY BECOME SMOOTH DURING VEHICLE OPERATION. IN THIS CONDITION, IF CONDENSATION OCCURS ON THE SURFACE, AS MAY OCCUR FROM HEATER OPERATION (WITHOUT A/C) WHEN THE PEDAL ASSEMBLY IS COLD, THE FRICTION WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS OPERATED MAY INCREASE, WHICH MAY RESULT IN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECOMING HARDER TO DEPRESS, SLOWER TO RETURN, OR, IN THE WORST CASE, MECHANICALLY STUCK IN A PARTIALLY DEPRESSED POSITION.

Risk: THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY BECOME HARD TO DEPRESS, SLOW TO RETURN TO IDLE, OR, IN THE WORST CASE, MECHANICALLY STUCK IN A PARTIALLY DEPRESSED POSITION, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
