2009 PONTIAC G6 Complaints and Recall Information

The 2009 Pontiac G6 has 2 complaints and 8 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to white smoke coming from under the hood and loss of power steering, with causes attributed to melted power steering hoses and motor mounts.

Common Issues

  • Power steering hose failure. The high-pressure power steering hose is located close to the exhaust pipe and melts due to heat exposure, causing white smoke and power steering loss.
  • Motor mount defects. Reports indicate motor mounts may fail, contributing to operational and safety concerns.

The vehicle is subject to 8 recalls affecting multiple systems including the transmission gear position indication, electric power steering, electronic stability control, brake light circuits, and steering components.

Recalls

  • Transmission shift cable. (NHTSA Recall 12V460000) About 426,240 vehicles affected. Tabs on the transmission shift cable may fracture causing mismatch between shift lever and actual gear, risking vehicle rollaway and crash. GM will install a retainer or replace the cable free of charge.
  • Electric power steering motor. (NHTSA Recall 14V153000) Over 1.3 million vehicles affected. Sudden loss of electric power steering assist increases steering effort and crash risk. GM will replace EPS components per bulletin with no current parts availability.
  • Body Control Module wiring. (NHTSA Recall 14V252000) More than 2.4 million vehicles affected. Increased resistance in BCM connection causes brake light, cruise control, and stability control malfunctions, raising crash risk. Dealers will attach harness spacers, apply lubricant, and relearn brake pedal position free of charge.
  • Brake light switch. (NHTSA Recall 14V252000) Same as above, covering brake light illumination issues impacting crash avoidance systems. Repair involves BCM connection attention as described.
  • Brake lights malfunction. (NHTSA Recall 14V252000) Identical scope affecting brake light operation with safety implications; fixed with BCM wiring and brake pedal home position relearn procedure.
  • Electrical wiring defects. (NHTSA Recall 14V252000) Linked to the same BCM harness resistance problem causing multiple system failures and fixed via the recall repair protocol.
  • Steering intermediate shaft. (NHTSA Recall 14E044000) About 7,304 vehicles with certain aftermarket steering shafts may experience premature u-joint bearing failure leading to loss of steering control. Dorman Products will replace or refund the shafts free of charge.

Owners facing repeated repairs or unresolved issues with safety defects or recalls should consider consulting their state’s lemon law to understand their rights. Prompt attention to these defects can help address vehicle safety and reliability concerns.

STEERING

Dorman Products, Inc. (Dorman) is recalling certain replacement intermediate steering shafts sold under the Dorman, OE Solutions, and Solutions brand names, part numbers 425-167, 2425167, and 7-3074, for installation on 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6, and 2007-2009 Saturn Aura vehicles. The affected steering shafts may have a yoke that inadequately supports the u-joint bearing resulting in a premature failure.

Risk: A joint bearing that fails prematurely may cause separation of the u-joint resulting in a complete loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles manufactured May 16, 2003, through October 11, 2012, 2004-2007 Malibu Maxx vehicles manufactured June 25, 2003, through April 5, 2007, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6 vehicles manufactured May 26, 2004, through January 4, 2010, and 2007-2010 Saturn Aura vehicles manufactured April 24, 2006, through May 26, 2009. In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the Body Control Module (BCM) connection may result in voltage fluctuations in the Brake Apply Sensor (BAS) circuit. These fluctuations can cause one or more of these conditions: the brake lights to illuminate without the brake pedal being pushed; the brake lights to not illuminate when the pedal is pushed; difficulty disengaging the cruise control; moving the gear shifter out of the 'PARK' position without pushing the brake; and disablement of crash avoidance features such as traction control, electronic stability control, and panic braking assist features.

Risk: Any of the above failure conditions increases the risk of a crash.

STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2006 and 2008-2009 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2006 Malibu Maxx, 2009-2010 HHR (non-turbo), 2010 Cobalt, 2008-2009 Saturn Aura and 2004-2007 Ion, and 2005-2009 Pontiac G6. In the affected vehicles, there may be a sudden loss of electric power steering (EPS) assist that could occur at any time while driving.

Risk: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:GEAR POSITION INDICATION (PRNDL)

General Motors (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Saturn Aura and model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6 vehicles, equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission. On these vehicles, the tabs on the transmission shift cable end may fracture and separate.

Risk: If the tabs were to fracture and separate, the shift lever and the actual position of the transmission gear may not match. The driver would be able to move the shifter to 'PARK' and remove the ignition key, but the transmission gear may not be in 'PARK.' The vehicle may not be able to be restarted and the vehicle could roll away after the driver has exited the vehicle, resulting in a possible crash without prior warning.

ENGINE

I purchased a used 2009 Pontiac G6 3.9L almost 4 years ago. I have experienced white smoke pouring from under my hood 3 times so far. I've taken it to the dealership and first time was informed it was a bad power steering hose leaking onto the exhaust- preCat area. The second repair dealership said it was a faulty hose. The third time dealer said it was a bad motor mount. After extensive research online, found out several years of G6 cars have the high pressure power steering hose about 1 inch from the exhaust pipe. This is causing the hose to melt due to the heat. GMC started making heat protective wrap around these hoses which still does not solve the problem-still burns thru. With a simple online search 2006-2010 G6 with the v-6 engines are still having this problem, costing owners money/time and safety issues. When I saw the white smoke, I lost my power stearing, causing panic and difficult steering. GM should have a recall, find a permanent solution where owners/family can feel safer. Most of these cars have low miles considering the age- Are owners afraid to drive the car due to the power steering hoses and exhaust being too close. Causing more concern for safety, and the costs for repairs and tow trucks.
