2017 FORD TAURUS Complaints and Recall Information
The 2017 FORD TAURUS has 4 complaints and 5 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues with the rear view camera system. Malfunctions include upside down images, black screens, and unavailable camera messages when the vehicle is in reverse.
Common Issues- Rear view camera failure. The camera intermittently displays upside down images or scaled-down distorted videos, and sometimes shows a blue or black screen when reversing.
- Backup assist malfunction. The backup assist feature occasionally fails, displaying messages indicating the camera is unavailable, which may impair rear visibility.
- Prolonged camera outage. Some owners report the rear view camera not working for extended periods, such as six months, despite troubleshooting efforts.
Five recalls affect various systems of the 2017 FORD TAURUS. These recalls address electrical, powertrain, suspension, and steering components that could impact vehicle safety and operation.
Recalls- Ignition and gear position system. (NHTSA Recall 18V141000) About 2,100 vehicles are affected by keys that can be removed when the transmission is not in PARK. This poses a rollover risk if the parking brake is not applied. Ford will replace the shifter assembly at no cost. The recall started May 11, 2018.
- Rear suspension toe links. (NHTSA Recall 20V072000) Approximately 211,207 vehicles with the Police Interceptor or SHO Performance Pack may have rear suspension toe links that can fracture, leading to sudden handling changes and crash risk. Ford will replace the toe links for free once parts are available. The recall began October 28, 2020, with ongoing owner notifications.
- Steering gear heat shield fasteners. (NHTSA Recall 17V530000) 253 vehicles face potential corrosion of heat shield fasteners, which can detach causing the steering gear to overheat. This increases steering effort and crash risk, especially at low speeds. Ford will inspect and replace fasteners at no charge. The recall started September 13, 2017.
Owners with repeated repairs or unresolved issues related to safety defects or recalls may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Consulting an attorney familiar with consumer protection laws could be beneficial.

I have heard of the recall for Ford back up cameras malfunctioning. My Taurus is experiencing the same problem but does not appear to be a vehicle that is being recalled. My screen turns blue most of the time when the car is put in reverse and then says camera unavailable

Lately, the backup assist feature has started to malfunction more frequently. The screen reads the backup cameras are unavailable. At other times, it functions fine as designed. This would not pick up a child who could be at the rear of the vehicle. Sometimes the screen goes black and shows nothing, or a message that the camera is not available, and other times it seems to show a weird scaled down and mostly indistinguishable video that seems to be an upside down depiction of rear view images.
