The 2013 WESTERN STAR 4900 has 0 complaints and 12 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to vehicle components covered by these recalls, though no individual owner complaints have been submitted.

There are 12 recalls addressing various safety and mechanical systems. They involve components such as suspension, engine fuel systems, seat belts, tires, lighting, steering, brakes, and onboard equipment. The recalls aim to fix defects that pose risks including wheel detachment, fuel leaks, restraint failures, tire mismatches, brake light malfunctions, steering loss, brake hose damage, and fire extinguisher failures.

Recalls
  • Front suspension spindle (Recall 12V266000). A machining error in the Detroit Axle-brand front axle knuckles may cause premature spindle failure. If the spindle breaks, the wheel can separate, causing loss of control and increasing crash risk. DTNA will inspect and replace affected knuckles free of charge for 217 vehicles.
  • High pressure fuel line support (Recall 12V074000). Fuel line supports may loosen due to assembly torque sensitivity, leading to cracks and fuel leaks. This creates fire and crash hazards. Affected Detroit Diesel engines on 103,437 vehicles will have the support system replaced at no cost.
  • Seatbelt D-ring anchorage (Recall 13V401000). Misaligned holes in the B-pillar reinforcement may reduce seatbelt effectiveness during crashes. Dealers will reinforce the D-ring anchor points free of charge for 650 vehicles.
  • Tires and rims approval (Recall 21V896000). Certain tires and rims are not approved or rated correctly for the vehicle, violating safety standards and risking tire performance issues. DTNA will inspect and replace tires and rims as needed on 307 vehicles.
  • Brake light pressure switch (Recall 17V761000). After hard braking, the pressure switch may fail to activate brake lights, preventing signaling to other drivers. The issue affects 438,255 vehicles, which dealers will repair without charge.
  • Tie-rod assembly (Recall 18V503000). Vibrations caused by brake and axle combinations can cause early failure of the tie-rod tube. Tie-rod failure results in loss of steering and crash risk. DTNA will replace brake linings, brake spider, and tie-rod on 1,256 vehicles.
  • Front brake hose chafing (Recall 18V351000). Insufficient clearance between the front brake hose and hood leads to hose chafing and potential air loss. This can reduce brake effectiveness, increasing crash risk. Dealers will replace the brake hose free for 640 vehicles.
  • Fire extinguisher malfunction (Recall 17V810000). Kidde fire extinguishers may clog or require excessive force to activate. Nozzle detachment risk could cause injury and extinguisher failure. DTNA will notify owners of 24,860 vehicles to contact Kidde for replacement extinguishers free of charge.

Owners dealing with repeated repairs, unresolved recall issues, or safety defects with their 2013 WESTERN STAR 4900 may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Consulting an attorney familiar with these laws can help determine available options.

STEERING:LINKAGES:TIE ROD ASSEMBLY

Daimler Trucks North America, LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2012-2015 Freightliner Cascadia, Coronado, Business Class M2, 114SD, and Western Star 4900 trucks. In certain front axle, brake lining, and brake spider combinations, braking may cause high vibrations, resulting in early failure of the tie-rod tube.

Risk: A tie-rod failure would cause a disconnect between the front wheels, resulting in a loss of steering ability, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.

SERVICE BRAKES, AIR

Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2012-2019 Western Star 4900 trucks built with Lowmax hoods and disc brakes. There may be insufficient clearance between the front brake hose and the hood resulting in the brake hose being chafed.

Risk: Front brake hose chafing may causing air loss, possibly reducing braking effectiveness and increasing the risk of a crash.

These vehicles are equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers that may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or excessive force may be needed to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf

Risk: In the event of a fire, if the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury.
