The 2012 WESTERN STAR 4700 has 0 complaints and 5 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to vehicle safety and component reliability as detailed in the recall data.
There are five recalls affecting this model. The recalls address engine fuel line integrity, air tank mounting brackets, brake light operation, and fire extinguisher functionality. These recalls involve critical safety systems and structural components.
Recalls- Engine fuel line support (12V074000). Affects 103,437 vehicles from model years 2006-2013. The fuel line support system may become loose due to assembly torque sensitivity, potentially causing fuel line cracks and leaks. A fuel leak could create a crash hazard or fire risk. The fix involves replacing the fuel line support system free of charge.
- Air tank mounting brackets (12V405000). Involves 1,663 vehicles made between 2009-2012 with perpendicular air tank mounts. Cracked brackets may allow air tanks to detach from the frame, creating road debris hazards. Dealers will replace the brackets free of charge.
- Brake light pressure switch (17V761000). Covers 438,255 vehicles from 2008-2018. The switch may fail to activate brake lights after hard stops, causing brake lights to not illuminate properly. This increases crash risk. Owners will receive repairs by dealers at no cost.
- Brake light failure (17V761000 duplicate). Same issue and recall details as the previous brake light defect, affecting the same number of vehicles and with the same remedy.
- Fire extinguisher malfunction (17V810000). Applies to 24,860 vehicles between 2002-2017 equipped with certain Kidde fire extinguishers. Possible clogs or nozzle detachment may prevent proper discharge or cause injury. Owners will be instructed to obtain a free replacement extinguisher from Kidde.
Owners dealing with recurring repairs or unresolved recall issues involving safety defects may have rights under their state lemon law. Consulting with a consumer protection attorney could provide guidance on possible legal remedies.
