2004 VOLVO XC70 Complaints and Recall Information

The 2004 VOLVO XC70 has 3 complaints and 3 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to coolant level warnings and leaks along with fuel pump leakage, which causes safety concerns such as fuel odors and difficulty starting the vehicle.

Common Issues
  • Coolant leak and warning light. The coolant level warning light activates despite filling with proper coolant, often tied to radiator leaks requiring repair.
  • Fuel pump leakage. Fuel leakage from the pump leads to a strong fuel smell and multiple attempts needed to start the engine, creating a safety risk.

There are 3 recalls affecting this model, targeting various safety-related components including the GPS unit and driver airbag system.

Recalls
  • GPS battery overheating. NHTSA recall 10V566000 affects 416 vehicles with Garmin 760 portable GPS units. Batteries may overheat and cause fire risks. Owners are advised to stop using the device and have the battery replaced free of charge.
  • Driver airbag inflator defect. NHTSA recall 21V800000 covers 194,546 vehicles from model years 2001-2007, including the 2004 XC70. The inflator may explode due to propellant degradation from long-term exposure to heat and humidity, risking serious injury or death. Dealers will replace defective airbags at no cost.

Owners with repeated repairs related to coolant leaks, fuel pump issues, or unresolved recall problems may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Consulting with a legal professional can help clarify those options.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL

My car kept getting a light for its coolant levels despite me filling it with proper coolant-I noticed a leak of coolant on the ground & upon getting it inspected from an independent service center, they told me the issue was my radiator so we got the part to fix it and a week later fixed the radiator and I didn’t get the light for coolant again. Although the independent service center told me that i actually had a fuel leakage due to my pump and described the issues I’ve been having with my car for a few months as signs to what problems this is causing, this meaning a funky fuel smell, my car struggling to fully turn on-needing multiple tries to actually fully turn on etc. this puts my safety at risk because fuel leakage is extremely dangerous for multiple reasons. Not inspected by manufacturer police or insurance reps. Other than the coolant light issue and the noticed continued leak after the coolant leakage was fixed. After looking into this issue online I found a recall notice from VOLVO and called them and they claimed my car wasn’t on this recall notice but my year and model is indeed listed and since im having the same problem as the recall listed its concerning me.
