2009 VOLVO VHD Complaints and Recall Information

The 2009 VOLVO VHD has 0 complaints and 7 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to vehicle safety components and labeling, as reflected in the recall data.

There are seven recalls affecting various systems, including labeling, seat belts, brakes, clutch assembly, exterior lighting, and suspension components. These recalls address potential safety risks associated with each defect.

  • Certification label error. Recall 10V492000 affects 1,926 vehicles due to incorrect tire descriptions on certification labels, which could lead to vehicle overloading and increased crash risk. Dealers will inspect and replace the labels free of charge.
  • Seat belt weld failure. Recall 12V510000 concerns 1,496 trucks with bench passenger seats where the seat belt d-ring weld may be insufficient, risking failure to restrain occupants in a crash. Dealers will replace the affected d-ring free of charge.
  • Brake supply valve corrosion. Recall 10V571000 involves 6,187 trucks with air release fifth wheels where the brake valve may corrode due to contamination, impairing brake performance and increasing crash risk. Dealers will inspect and replace the valve as needed.
  • Clutch disengagement switch missing. Recall 13V268000 affects 23,056 vehicles lacking a redundant clutch disengagement switch, which can prevent clutch disengagement during braking and increase stopping distance. Dealers will inspect and repair if needed.
  • Snow plow headlight malfunction. Recall 18V766000 impacts 4,625 trucks where snow plow headlights operate without other exterior lights and the high beam indicator fails, reducing vehicle visibility. Dealers will update related software at no charge.
  • Lower ball joint corrosion. Recall 16V735000 applies to 4,177 trucks with non-greasable drag links whose ball joint seals allow water and contaminants entry, accelerating wear and risking steering failure. Dealers will replace the drag links free of charge.
  • Upper ball joint corrosion. Recall 16V735000 also covers the upper ball joints on the same 4,177 trucks causing similar corrosion and steering risk as the lower joints. The recall repairs are performed at no cost to owners.

Owners facing repeated repairs or unresolved safety defects involving recalls should consider that they may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Consultation with an attorney experienced in lemon law is advisable for those with ongoing issues.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

Volvo Trucks North America (Volvo) is recalling certain 2004-2019 Volvo VHD trucks equipped with snow plow lamp preparation kits. The snow plow headlights can be turned on without other exterior lights, and high beam indicator will not work when the snow plow high beams are on. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Risk: The driver may operate the vehicle with the snow plow headlights on but the marker and tail lamps off, reducing the vehicle's visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.

SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:UPPER BALL JOINT

Volvo Trucks North America (Volvo) is recalling certain model year 2009-2016 VHD trucks manufactured from April 7, 2008, through December 9, 2015, equipped with USK non-greasable drag links. The ball joint seals may be compromised, which can allow water and other contaminants to enter the ball joints.

Risk: If water and contaminants enter the ball joint, corrosion can occur and lead to accelerated wear, which over time can result in failure of the ball joint, possibly resulting in complete loss of steering, increasing the risk of a crash.

POWER TRAIN:CLUTCH ASSEMBLY

Volvo Trucks North America (Volvo) is recalling certain model year 2007-2014 VAH, VHD, VNL, VNM, and VT models. The affected vehicles were built without a redundant clutch disengagement switch. Without a redundant switch, a loss of signal from the brake air pressure switch can prevent the clutch from automatically disengaging when the brake is applied.

Risk: Without a signal to disengage the clutch when the brakes are applied, the distance required to stop the truck may lengthen, increasing the risk of a crash.

SEAT BELTS

Volvo is recalling certain model year 2002-2013 VHD and VN trucks, manufactured from August 4, 2000, through June 22, 2012, and equipped with bench passenger seats. The seat belt d-ring weld may not be sufficient enough to meet the seat belt pull test. Therefore, these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 210, "Seat Belt Assembly Anchorages."

Risk: In the event of a crash, an insufficient seat belt weld may prevent the seat belt from properly restraining the occupant. This increases the risk of injury to the seat occupant.

VOLVO IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2008-2011 VHD, VNL, VNM, AS WELL AS 2008-2010 VT VEHICLES FOR FAILING TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF PART 567, "CERTIFICATION." THE TIRE DESCRIPTION MAY BE INCORRECT ON THE VEHICLE'S CERTIFICATION LABEL.

Risk: THE MISINFORMATION ON THESE LABELS COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE OVERLOADING THAT CAN INCREASE RISK OF A CRASH.

SERVICE BRAKES, AIR:SUPPLY:QUICK RELEASE VALVE

VOLVO TRUCKS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2007 AND 2009 VHD, MODEL YEAR 2006 THROUGH 2010 VN, AND MODEL YEAR 2007 THROUGH 2009 VT TRUCKS MANUFACTURED FROM NOVEMBER 7, 2005, THROUGH OCTOBER 30, 2009, EQUIPPED WITH AN AIR RELEASE FIFTH WHEEL. THE INVERSION VALVE ON THE FRAME MAY BE ORIENTATED WHERE CONTAMINANTS CAN ENTER THE VALVE THROUGH THE EXHAUST PORT. AS A RESULT, THE BRAKE VALVE MAY CORRODE.

Risk: CORROSION OF THE VALVE CAN CAUSE IT TO MALFUNCTION, THEREBY ADVERSELY AFFECTING BRAKING PERFORMANCE AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
