2023 VOLVO C40BEV Complaints and Recall Information

The 2023 VOLVO C40BEV has 8 complaints and 6 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners frequently report issues with the rearview camera system failing to display when backing up. Multiple reports describe the camera as "temporarily not available" with continued malfunctions even after recall repairs. Some owners mention problems with the turn signals and software resets being necessary. There is also a complaint involving sudden forward lunging when braking accompanied by steering and warning light failures. One owner reported spontaneous cracking of a rear passenger window under temperature changes.

Common Issues

  • Rearview camera failure. The backup camera frequently shows error messages or fails to display, affecting rear visibility while reversing.
  • Software update problems. Over-the-air software updates intended to fix camera issues may be unavailable or unrecognized by some vehicles, requiring dealer visits.
  • Turn signal malfunction. Blinkers intermittently stop working and may require a software reset to restore function.
  • Unexpected vehicle movement. Braking failures cause the vehicle to lunge forward unexpectedly when stopping.
  • Steering and warning lights failure. Steering becomes inoperable and multiple warning lights illuminate during incidents involving braking, causing loss of vehicle control.
  • Ignition shutoff failure. The vehicle does not shut off when attempted using the key fob or instrument panel controls.
  • Rear window cracking. Glass on the rear passenger side shattered unexpectedly, potentially related to temperature stress.

The six recalls on the 2023 VOLVO C40BEV target various safety and electronic control systems. Recall issues involve rearview camera software, braking functions, airbag inflators, a diagnostic error affecting braking support, and false emergency call warnings. Repairs generally include free software updates or component replacements through dealers or over-the-air updates.

Recalls

  • Rearview camera system. (Recall 25V282000, 413,151 vehicles) The rear camera image may fail to display when shifting into reverse increasing crash risk. The fix updates software via dealer or OTA. Owner letters mailed June 27, 2025.
  • Brake function loss. (Recall 25V392000, 11,469 vehicles) The vehicle may lose brake function when coasting downhill using "B" mode or "One Pedal Drive," raising crash risk. • Driver airbag inflator clamps. (Recall 24V938000, 2 vehicles) Improper clamp crimps on the driver’s side airbag module can cause improper deployment, raising injury risk. Dealers will replace the airbag module. Owners notified January 24, 2025.
  • Brake control module error. (Recall 23V012000, 27,457 vehicles) A diagnostic error may cause loss of ABS, ESC, and traction control, reducing brake support and increasing crash risk. A BCM2 software update will be provided via OTA. Notification letters expected March 15, 2023.
  • Emergency call system false warning. (Recall 23V188000, 393 vehicles) A false diagnostic trouble code may display an erroneous "e-Call Service Required" message, potentially delaying emergency responses. Dealers will update related telematics software. Notification expected May 16, 2023.

STRUCTURE:BODY

I was at a traffic light today and my rear passenger window just completely spider webbed, while my daughter was in the back seat. I had to pull over and clean as much glass from the window to prevent falling on her and causing any additional damage. There were no other vehicles or pedestrians around. The only thing I can think of is that it was temperature related from being in the sun for a few hours and then having the AC on for about 5 minutes. I have researched on different volvo forums and threads and see other owners having similar issues. [XXX] [XXX] Thermal stress and expansion: When exposed to high temperatures, the glass expands, and if this expansion is uneven (perhaps due to varying thicknesses or materials), it creates thermal stress, potentially weakening the glass. When I reported the incident to the dealership they denied any other complaints or recalls instantly put the blame on an external impact without even inspecting the vehicle. There has been no official inspection by any party. The soonest the dealer will see it is on 8/12/25 INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

VISIBILITY/WIPER

Re. R10320 Volvo sent a recall notice regarding the rearview camera being unavailable when vehicle is placed in reverse. This is an issue that affects me/my car almost daily. The notice is dated June 27, 2025 and was told an Over The Air update would be available. I do not live nearby a Volvo dealer so rely on the ability to update the software remotely. However the OTA option is not recognized by my vehicle. When I called Volvo they told me there is no date by which the OTA update will be available and advised me to visit a dealer. Please encourage Volvo to make this important update available via OTA. Thank you.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA

Cameras stopped working and getting message “camera temporarily not available”. But does not appear to be temporary. Lots of discussion of this issue on message boards but nothing from Volvo.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA

There are frequent errors with the infotainment. Often times, when backing up—the screen will say “back up camera not available.” Recently, I experienced a problem where the blinkers were not working until I reset the software on the car.
