2014 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA Complaints and Recall Information

The 2014 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA has 8 complaints and 6 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to sudden unintended acceleration, loss of power while driving, and excessive oil consumption. Several complaints also describe problems with the transmission shifting into neutral unexpectedly or failing completely.

Common Issues
  • Sudden unintended acceleration. Vehicles reportedly accelerated without driver input, sometimes reaching high speeds unexpectedly while brakes failed to control the car.
  • Transmission failure. The transmission reportedly shifts into neutral while driving, causing immediate loss of power and increased risk of accidents.
  • Excessive oil consumption. Owners observe rapid oil loss, requiring frequent oil top-ups starting around 30,000 miles with no resolution from dealerships.
  • Engine stalling and no restart. Vehicles shut off while in motion and sometimes fail to restart despite cranking, suspected to be linked to timing chain issues.
  • Mechatron unit defect. Failures of the mechatron unit in the transmission cause power loss; some owners were not covered by a recall despite matching recall conditions.
  • Unresponsive brakes during acceleration events. In some cases, brakes did not slow the vehicle during unintended acceleration, creating a serious safety hazard.
  • Inconsistent diagnostic results. Mechanics sometimes could not identify faults despite repeated occurrences of failures, leading to unresolved repairs.
  • Diesel particulate filter (DPF) concerns. Some owners were advised to replace expensive emission components although these were unrelated to throttle or acceleration problems.

There are 6 recalls for the 2014 Jetta addressing multiple critical vehicle systems. These recalls involve components such as the transmission cooling unit, fuel system, air bags, ignition control module, steering column lock, and hydraulic brake master cylinder. Defects in these areas may affect vehicle safety and drivability.

Recalls
  • Transmission cooling unit seals. NHTSA recall 14V182000 affects 26,452 vehicles with leaking O-ring seals between the oil cooler and transmission. Leaks could cause fires. Dealers replace O-ring seals free of charge.
  • Fuel rail sealing cap. Recall 15V028000 covers 44,658 vehicles with potential fuel leaks at the fuel rail, risking fire. Dealers replace fuel rails at no cost.
  • Steering wheel clock spring for airbags. Recall 15V483000 applies to over 415,825 vehicles where debris might tear the clock spring cable, disabling the driver airbag. Dealers install protective covers or replace clock springs for free.
  • Ignition anti-theft control module. Recall 19V615000 involves 679,027 vehicles where silicate buildup may allow key removal while the transmission is not in park, increasing rollaway risk. Dealers install new switches and circuit boards free of charge.
  • Steering column locking device. Also part of recall 19V615000, addressing the same silicate buildup issue as the ignition control module, with a similar fix and risk.
  • Brake master cylinder seal defect. Recall 20E064000 affects 38 vehicles with possible brake fluid leaks that reduce braking ability. Distributors replace affected parts at no charge.

Owners with repeated repairs for transmission, acceleration, or braking defects or those facing unresolved recall issues may want to review their rights under their state’s lemon law. Consulting a qualified attorney may help determine eligibility based on specific circumstances.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:MASTER CYLINDER

Tenneco Automotive (Tenneco) is recalling certain Beck/Arnley Master Cylinders, part number 072-9831, sold as aftermarket or replacement parts for 2004-2018 Volkswagen Jetta, and 2012-2019 Volkswagen Beetle vehicles. The fluid seal crimp on the master cylinder may be insufficient, causing brake fluid to leak or the cylinder to come apart.

Risk: If there is a brake fluid leak, it can reduce braking ability, increasing the risk of a crash.

STEERING:COLUMN LOCKING:ANTI-THEFT DEVICE

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2015-2019 GTI, 2015-2016 and 2018-2019 Golf, 2012-2019 Beetle and Beetle Convertible, 2017-2019 Golf SportWagen and 2011-2018 Jetta vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, manual handbrake and keyless entry. A build-up of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts may enable the key to be removed from the ignition when the transmission shift lever is not in "Park."

Risk: Removing the key while the shift lever is in a position other than "Park" increases the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Volkswagen CC, and Passat, 2010-2013 Eos, 2011-2014 Golf, GTI, Jetta, and Tiguan, and 2012-2014 Jetta Sportwagen vehicles. In the affected vehicles, debris may contaminate the air bag clock spring, a spiral wound, flat cable that keeps the air bag powered while the steering wheel is being turned. This contamination may tear the cable and result in a loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag.

Risk: A loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag will prevent the air bag from deploying in the event of a vehicle crash, increasing the risk of injury.

[XXX] driving on [XXX] , my car accelerated to almost redline without me pushing the pedal, I tried the brake only to find it didn't control the car., it died in the slow lane, no power anything. Eng lite was on, towed to my mechanic, he couldn't find why but the code said EGR, so he cleaned and replaced glow plugs, & regen'd the DPF to 0.. so I picked up the car, and a few days later, it did it again through a 4way stop. I called vw & was told to go to the dealer. Oakland VW inspected & said need new DPF $6K. Since the filter doesn't affect throttle, I declined, plus in 2022 on an extended warranty I went to dealer to have the filter replaced, instead they regen'd it & left the bad part in my car. Now the corporate Care Manager wants the DPF replaced for $6K b4 proceeding with any further testing to identify the source of the acceleration problem. The shop mgr, Joseph, was test driving & the car did take off and was not stoppable with the brakes. That was confirmed, yet VW of America is still in a holding pattern and cannot explain why this is happening. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY PROBLEM. The car takes off out of control unexpectedly, and the brakes won't stop the force forward. PLEASE help me, I cannot stress enough the danger this car puts me and others in, and it is my only vehicle. The dealer is trying but corporate is being difficult and are not interested in compromise. The DPF, emissions issues they have had, have nothing to do with the acceleration and they just refuse to move forward or discuss anything else. My cars consumes oil like crazy. I'd say every week I am adding a quart to two quarts of oil. I would lose power while driving. Sometimes the car would just shut off And then it would take a few times to get it started. I was in the middle of driving when the car just completely shut off on me and it will not start at all. It will crank and sound like it's going to turn over but it won't. I've been told it's most likely a timing chain issue.

POWER TRAIN

I was driving down the Highway at 65 miles per hour when my vehicle suddenly appeared to go into neutral and I lost power in the middle lane and almost was rear-ended. I was able to move over to the side shoulder just gliding. The vehicle starts but while driving it the transmission suddenly appears to go into neutral. The symptoms are consistent with the Recall 34J6 but when I look up my VIN it does not show any pending recalls.

I HAVE A 2014 JETTA HYBRID. MY CAR LOST POWER WHEN I TRIED TO USE IT. BROUGHT IT TO VW OF HAYWARD AND WAS TOLD IT WAS A FAULTY MECHATRON UNIT. WHICH I PAID FOR. I FOUND A RECALL ON THIS UNIT BUT FOR SOME REASON THE RECALL DIDN'T COVER MY VEHICLE. THAT ODD BECAUSE IT SAYS THAT 2013-2015 JETTA ARE BEING RECALL FOR MECHATRON FAILURES (RECALL CODE 34J6). ALL OF THE PROBLEMS DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL WERE EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO MY VEHICLE. I THINK MY CAR SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED BY THE RECALL. I DON'T THINK I SHOUILD HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS REPAIR ($2400). THIS DEFECT WAS KNOWN BY VW AND IT IS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO COVER THE COSTS.
