Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2021-2023 ID.4, 2022-2023 Audi Q4 e-Tron, and Q4 e-Tron Sportback vehicles. The instrument panel may not properly display the transmission gear lever indicator. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 102, "Transmission Shift Lever Sequence, Starter Interlock, and Transmission Braking Effect."

Risk: Failure to display the gear position may result in a vehicle rollaway if the parking brake is not engaged, increasing the risk of a crash.

Risk: A vehicle door that opens unexpectedly while driving increases the risk of injury.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:INSTRUMENT PANEL:SPEEDOMETER/ODOMETER

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (VW) is recalling certain 2021-2023 ID.4 vehicles. Due to a software issue, affected vehicles may experience center displays and instrument panel displays that do not boot, or that sporadically reset. This can result in loss of speedometer information or loss of rearview camera image. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 101, "Control and Displays" and 111, "Rear Visibility."

Risk: Displays that do not show critical information, such as vehicle speed or the rearview camera image, increase the risk of a crash.

The affected vehicles may have been manufactured with door handles that allow water to enter the circuit board assembly, which can cause the doors to open unexpectedly when the vehicle is subject to high lateral forces at speeds below 9 mph/15 kmh.

Risk: A vehicle door that opens unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion increases the risk of injury.

Risk: A reset or deactivation may cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2021 ID4 vehicles. The passenger air bag may be incorrectly folded. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

Risk: An incorrectly folded air bag may not protect the occupant as intended during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2021 ID.4 vehicles. Caps were installed on the headlight vertical aim instead of the horizontal aim, allowing for horizontal adjustment of the headlight beam. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Risk: Adjusting the horizontal headlight beam can increase glare, reducing visibility for the driver and increasing the risk of a crash.

SEAT BELTS

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2021 Volkswagen ID4, Audi A4 Allroad, A4 Sedan, A5 Cabriolet, A5 Coupe, A5 Sportback, A6 Allroad, A6 Sedan, A7, A8, E-Tron Quattro, E-Tron Sportback Quattro, Q3, Q5, Q5 Sportback, Q7, Q8, RS5 Sportback, RS5 Coupe, RS6 Avant, RS7, RSQ8, S4 Sedan, S5 Cabriolet, S5 Coupe, S5 Sportback, S6 Sedan, S7, S8, SQ5, SQ5 Sportback, SQ7, SQ8, and 2021-2022 S3 Sedan vehicles. The rear seat belt automatic locking retractors may deactivate early, which can prevent the child restraint system from securing properly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

I have turn signal lamps burned out on both sides of my 2021 VW ID4. When driving straight, the burnt out lights are part of daytime running lights. Half of the light is burnt out. TIRES

235/50/20 104T MFD: 0223 & 5022 (both on the front) Driven less than 15,000 miles so far. Started having this issue around 10k miles. Will have to swap soon before a major accident occurs due to tire failure and checking almost all the boxes that are below. I have no words to describe and neither does the firestone employee. I am attaching pictures. Chunks of tread are coming off from all around the tire. Inside, outside, 360 degree. In the picture you'll see how much tread there is and see how deep the chunks are. This is a major safety issue. I have 2 other tires same model but from 2024 MFD without issue. In fact, all was working well before our last service visit when the vehicle's software was updated.

I put my foot on the brake to bring the car to a complete stop but instead of slowing down the car accelerated straight into the vehicle in front of me. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The car will periodically lock with the key inside the car. This is potentially deadly for women to keep their keys in their purses. When they exit the vehicle, the door may lock, trapping a small child in a hot car. I had this happen to me today, but luckily, no child was in the back seat. Browsing the VW forums, this is not an isolated incident. I contacted VW, and they did not seem to care.

ENGINE

After charging with my home charger, the electrical system has been one unusable or shown electrical error codes. In March 2025, the engine battery cells had a significant failure that required towing to the service center as it was completely unable to drive. This repair took 5 weeks to complete. The car had regular service and inspection 7/19/25 and issues with the navigation system and the charging port door were indicated. On 7/22/25 a warning light for electrical issues please service now came on. It was drivable to the service center but it is still not diagnosed due to another ID4 being serviced at the same time and they’re unable to work on 2. Of course with all of these downtimes we are still paying for a loan on a car we are not able to drive due to it being unsafe.

There have been multiple instances on different surfaces where this has happened. The driver seat was occupied, restrained, looking over right shoulder primarily to reverse and the vehicle turns off. This is a huge safety issue, what if you are halfway into a roadway, triple checking over your shoulder and the car turns off.

After replacing rear tire on this vehicle, (due to a flat tire). The traction control system malfunctions. The TCS turns on, on the slightest of turns, when the TCS turns on it reduces power the wheels. So therefore while driving and turning the TCS will reduce power, causing vehicle to slow in turns. Possible setting up driver for a rear end collision. This has happened to me directly, filed complaints with the manufacturer had vehicle there, told to replace all four. Did that and issue was reduced however not resolved.

While I was driving on the highway another time, it decided to reboot the screen and it was unable to adjust. Although I maintained an adequate stopping distance from the truck in front of me, my forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assistance systems suddenly activated, causing my vehicle to make contact with the truck. My safety—and the safety of others—was compromised. My vehicle sustained front-end damage. This was not the first time these systems engaged without cause. I took my vehicle to Heritage Volkswagen Parkville (located in Carney, Maryland) due to unresolved recalls and these irregular system behaviors. The dealership claims that Volkswagen requires me to replace the tires, align the wheels, and install a new 12V battery before completing the recall work or troubleshooting the issue. I informed the service manager that the vehicle is unsafe to drive and that, under federal law, the dealership is obligated to complete the recall. He responded that the recall work cannot proceed until the tire replacement, alignment, and battery installation are completed. As of June 23, 2025, my vehicle remains at the dealership. I have unsuccessfully attempted to reach VW’s Customer CARE department. The vehicle is not safe. I believe VW is at fault.

The problem was investigated but could not been reproduced. The vehicle was inspected by a team of investigators from the Manufacturer, VW. No warning signs or abnormal situations prior the the incident. The vehicle was in our possession and driven for 3 years, about 55k miles, no issues ever. The driver at the time is an experienced driver and familiar with the vehicle operation for three years.

AIR BAGS

I get an airbag warning, after going to VW to get it looked at they said it was error with the POD’s system. The error is same as VW Safety Recall Code: 69FB. I think my model car should fall into this recall as well.

TIRES:BEAD

In Sept. 2024 we noticed that the edges of both front tires (Alenza 235/50 R20) had pieces coming off them so we arranged to have the tires replaced at the original dealer from which we had bought the car. They agreed that the tires were failing and replaced them. At that point the tires had only done 11827 miles so I asked if a warranty was applicable that would allow me to get back some of the replacement cost for the two tires. The dealer (Hazelwood Volkswagen of Bremerton, WA) said they would make inquiries and I paid the full price in the meantime. Despite numerous follow up inquiries, as well as contact with both VW USA and Bridgestone, I have not received any response. The suggestion seems to be that original equipment supplied with a new car are not covered by any warranty. After the tires were replaced I turned off the lane assist feature on the vehicle as this often seemed overly active due to random road markings. So far we have put about 3500 miles on the new tires and they seem fine. I have pieces that chipped off the old tires, and the dealer said they would hold the old tires pending a warranty response but that was in September 2024.

POWER TRAIN

Speedometer display went black for 15-10 seconds while the vehicle was in motion. Both the screen in front of the steering wheel and the infotainment screens went blank. The speedometer eventually came back. The other screen took much longer to recover.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Battery cell issue not resolved due to charger recall. Vehicle now unable to drive. Door handle recall still outstanding and predicted completion unknown due to parts issue. This in it self is dangerous as doors can open randomly while driving.

The car completely stopped without warning. The dashboard lit up with all the lights and informed me that the I need to pull over. There was no time to pull over as the car completely lost all power. The car was traveling on the freeway. It would not start back up and I needed to call 911 for help. The tow truck could not get the car started and the CHP needed to run a traffic break to get it towed off the road. The dealer could only find an NV-energy management alarm triggered and said it was ok to drive again. The next day driving on [XXX], when returning to my car the car said the vehicle electrical system had an error and I could not power it on. I requested a tow and the car is currently at the service department. Of note is when the car was pulled off the freeway I was able to start it and drive it home like nothing happened. Again on [XXX], the car once at the dealership was able to be powered on and driven. There were no warning lights on the car after that. If the car would have stopped while travel at 65MPH, I think there could have been a major crash and it puts the safety of me the driver as well as the other drivers around me as great risk. I have never felt uncomfortable traveling on the highway until this happened. I would never expect a car to completely shut off while travel on the highway with no way of pulling over to the side of the road. Error: Airbag periodically comes on, goes off at random times. Seems to be an issue with the Passenger Occupancy Detection System Module. Nothing spilled to make this module not work properly. With this error on, it turns off the airbag for the passenger. This has been confirmed by the dealer. This error appeared without warning or incident at ~45K miles on the car.

Error: Airbag periodically comes on, goes off at random times. Seems to be an issue with the Passenger Occupancy Detection System Module. Nothing spilled to make this module not work properly. With this error on, it turns off the airbag for the passenger. This has been confirmed by the dealer. This error appeared without warning or incident at ~45K miles on the car.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

On March 26, 2024 the VW Id.4 caught fire while being driven on freeway. The driver was able to pull over and escape from the vehicle as it burned but sustained burns to his left arm, hand and face. The vehicle was engulfed in flames and destroyed. An inspection of the vehicle and battery modules in October of 2024 by VW experts and experts for the driver determined that the fire started in one of the battery modules and was not due to external causes or road hazards. The remains of the vehicle and battery modules have been preserved.

I was wearing a seat belt but suffered an burn from the airbag on right inner forearm that was impression of VW logo and has resulted in lasting scar, I had modest right wrist sprain and right shin contusion, abrasion. The vehicle rolled back in the road and was towed and later totaled by insurance. The automatic braking detection nor any other airbag deployed on collision.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Both screens went black while I was driving. This is after the fix from the recall.

Mechanical 'clunk' noise that comes from the rear of the car when accelerating or decelerating. This occurs predominately at a mild or above acceleration/deceleration. If the vehicle gradually moves the noise does not occur. The noise has gotten more frequent over time and has also become louder. First observed late 2024, and taken for initial dealership diagnoises and inspection early 2025. The dealership has replaced a harness cover but it remains unresolved. The dealership is continuing to investigate the cause as they are not aware what is creating the clunk. The car does not indicate any warning lights or have any error codes that are reported. It does appear to drive normally, however the concern of a mechincal clunk is concerning as there is no awareness of what part is creating the noise and if it is damaging other components or will lead to a catastrophic failure while driving. The interior driver side rear passenger door (left behind the driver) and window won't open. This appears to only affect the driver side passenger rear door. The inside passenger side rear (right side of the car) door handle works. Also, the exterior door handle for the driver side rear door opens the door so it's only the interior handle that doesn't work. This is dangerous because there's no way to open that door if you're sitting inside. I tried to open the window and the button also doesn't seem to work. This happens when the car is off or on at any speed or stopped.

SERVICE BRAKES

I believe Volkswagen has made a recent software change which causes the brakes to malfunction when operating in the rain. The problem began after I had a software update performed by the dealer in January 2025 and manifests itself when slowing down and approaching the last mile or two per hour when stopping, and suddenly the brakes slam on causing the car to come to a jarring stop. This is specifically tied to when it is either raining or the roads are wet. I have taken this to the maintenance department of my local VW dealer and their response has been that the car is "Operating as Volkswagen has designed it to." This is a recent change as I am the only owner of this car and have owned it for 4 years and have driven 60,000 miles without these symptoms. I also spoke with Volkswagen North America. They were sympathetic, but told me that it was a dealer issue.

From the last update from the service rep is that they tried to update the software and it has been failing. Apparently VW manufacturer support team has been notified and the suggested procedures from them were also unsuccessful. At this time its been 5 weeks and no sight on when they would be able to fix the issue. I have been given an loaner vehicle which is similar with less features, but i cannot have my daughter use the vehicle due to age restriction. I want to raise the concern here to see if there can be any solution to have VW to get my vehicle serviced or replace with similar vehicle. An OTA update was released for the 2021 VW ID.4, but that update ended up killing the Car Net Module. I brought the car in to the dealership due to this issue, but they were unable to do the recall because the car net module was no longer functioning. They said it would be over $1,000 to have the part replaced and then they would be able to perform the recall. So at this time my vehicle is still unsafe to drive and the dealership is refusing to do the do the recall unless we pay to have a part replaced that is required to be functioning in order to do the recall.

Even if I had, the AEB system is supposed to prevent me crashing at close range. I understand that this is a known issue related to the adaptive cruise control. The force of my car was so great that 3 cars in front of me sustained damage.

Due to unresolved safety recalls I do not drive the VW ID4. I am afraid that I might get into an accident if the vehicle doors open, visual screen goes blank or all electrical power shuts off. NHTSA should demand VW of America to get rid of all their electric cars that have no remedy in place for safety. VW of America is putting the buyers of these vehicles in harm's way.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

In December the vehicle started showing a pedestrian warning sound fault light. The pedestrian warning sound was replaced by a siren that sounds like an air raid siren which makes the car virtually undriveable.

My infotainment and instrument panel displays have frozen or reset multiple times while driving. On one occasion, my air conditioning came out at a high speed, the volume of my radio went up and all of my indicators came on. Luckily I was able to pull over to avoid a crash, but needless to say it was horrifying. I took the car in for service, and they assured me they had reset the OS, and I'd be fine. That extreme of an instance hasn't occurred since, but the infotainment display does still go black, freeze or reset from time to time. Every time, I schedule an appointment to fix the recall, the VW Service cancels my appointment, saying updates keep crashing for other customers. I also receive VW app notifications that my AC is on when I'm not even in the car. Same with the door locks, I constantly receive notifications that my car is unclocked when I know I've locked it and am inside my house. The other main issues with the door handles is the passenger doors often only open after multiple lock and unlock attempts via button the inside the car, bc the fob doesn't always work. Even with new batteries. Again, I've scheduled service appointments to fix the recall, and they cancel it saying they don't have the parts. It's been almost a year, I've been dealing with both of these issues.
