2015 VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE CONVERTIBLE Complaints and Recall Information
The 2015 VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE CONVERTIBLE has 2 complaints and 6 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners report issues primarily with the passenger seat air bag sensor failing to recognize occupants, causing the air bag warning light to illuminate. The dealer indicated the integrated sensor requires seat replacement, but repairs were not completed in the reported cases.
Common Issues- Passenger air bag sensor failure. The sensor inside the passenger seat cushion stops detecting when someone is seated, triggering the air bag warning light. The issue persists even after previous repairs related to the air bag system.
- Air bag warning light illumination. Owners have reported the air bag warning light turning on roughly two years after repair.
- Seat replacement required. The dealer states the entire passenger seat must be replaced to fix the sensor issue because the sensor is integrated into the seat cushion.
There are 6 recalls associated with this vehicle affecting various safety and electrical systems. These recalls mainly concern airbags and ignition system defects.
Recalls- Driver side air bag inflator (Recall 22V945000). This recall covers 37,558 vehicles. The inflator may explode due to propellant degradation from exposure to high humidity and temperatures. This defect risks sharp metal fragments causing serious injury or death. Dealers will replace the driver’s side air bag free of charge. No do not drive or park outside advisory applies.
- Ignition system anti-theft control module (Recall 19V615000). Affecting 679,027 vehicles, a silicate build-up on shift lever micro switch contacts may let the key be removed when the transmission is not in Park. This increases the chance of unintended rollaway, which can cause injury or crashes. Dealers add an extra switch and circuit board at no cost. No driving restrictions are issued.
- Steering column locking anti-theft device (Recall 19V615000). This recall shares the same NHTSA number and affected vehicle count as the ignition system recall. It addresses the risk of removing the key with the transmission out of Park leading to rollaway. The fix installs an additional switch and circuit board free of charge, with no do not drive or park outside advisory.
Owners with repeated air bag sensor failures or outstanding recall repairs may want to review their state’s lemon law protections. Those facing ongoing safety defects or unresolved recalls should consider their rights under applicable consumer protection laws.

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2015-2016 Beetle and Beetle Convertibles vehicles. The driver's side air bag inflator may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
Risk: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

STEERING:COLUMN LOCKING:ANTI-THEFT DEVICE
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2015-2019 GTI, 2015-2016 and 2018-2019 Golf, 2012-2019 Beetle and Beetle Convertible, 2017-2019 Golf SportWagen and 2011-2018 Jetta vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, manual handbrake and keyless entry. A build-up of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts may enable the key to be removed from the ignition when the transmission shift lever is not in "Park."
Risk: Removing the key while the shift lever is in a position other than "Park" increases the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.
