2018 TOYOTA TACOMA Complaints and Recall Information

The 2018 TOYOTA TACOMA has 21 complaints and 6 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues with the forward collision detection system malfunctioning, fuel pump failures leading to stalling, brake system leaks, and paint defects. Problems with electronic power steering and rear wheel malfunctions were also reported.

Common Issues
  • Forward collision detection failure. The Millimeter Wave Radar Sensor Assembly malfunctions, triggering warning lights and disabling the system. Some repairs relate to recalled parts installed improperly by dealers.
  • Fuel pump failure. Reports include engine stalling and loss of power due to a defective low-pressure fuel pump. Dealers sometimes refuse coverage citing prior recall repairs.
  • Brake fluid leaks. Brake fluid leaks inside the cab from the brake master cylinder and booster cause safety concerns, including possible fire hazards.
  • Paint clear coat failure. Clear coat on the hood, roof, and doors deteriorates, exposing the base coat and potentially leading to rust formation.
  • Electronic power steering failure. Steering requires increased effort due to rack and pinion failure, without warning lights activating.
  • Parking brake cable issues. Rear passenger side wheel stops rotating intermittently because of parking brake cable malfunctions, recurring after repairs.
  • Odometer fraud. Mileage discrepancies discovered post-purchase reveal increased odometer readings significantly beyond the advertised mileage.
  • Third brake light leaks. Water leaks into the cab around the third brake light cause lingering odors, possible mold growth, and interior staining.
  • Engine no-start condition. The vehicle fails to start due to confirmed fuel pump defects through diagnostic testing.
  • Suspension noise and wear. Suspension components degrade prematurely with loud noises developing during normal street use, unrelated to off-road driving.

Six recalls affect the 2018 Toyota Tacoma. The recalls primarily involve the fuel delivery system and hydraulic brake components. These defects risk engine stalling, brake performance reduction, and potential crash hazards.

Recalls
  • Fuel pump assembly. (NHTSA recall 20V012000) Affects 1,830,752 vehicles including 2018 Tacoma models. The low-pressure fuel pump may fail, causing engine stall and increased crash risk. Dealers will replace the pump free of charge. No Do Not Drive or Park Outside advisory issued.
  • Fuel pump assembly expansion. (NHTSA recall 20V682000) Covers 1,525,742 vehicles including 2017-2020 Tacoma. The recall expands on recall 20V012000 with a replacement of the fuel pump assembly with an improved part. Engine stall risk remains. Remedy parts became available starting January 2021 and free replacement is offered by dealers.
  • Brake master cylinder. (NHTSA recall 18V888000) Affects 44,121 vehicles including 2018-2019 Tacoma. Improper machining of the brake master cylinder seal may reduce braking performance, increasing crash risk. Dealers will replace the master cylinder free of charge. No Do Not Drive or Park Outside advisory issued.

Owners dealing with repeated repairs related to engine stalls, brake failures, or unresolved recall issues with the 2018 Tacoma should consider their rights under their state’s lemon law. Documentation of ongoing defects and repair attempts will be important for any potential claims.

After a couple of years of owning my truck, the paint started on my hood and roof started to turn white and fade. I don’t understand why Toyota uses this type of paint that’s going to get messed up after a couple of years. Also after 4 years of owning the truck, the suspension is all messed up (never took the truck off road or driven it anywhere else but the streets and now they make noises like crazy

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

On June 26, 2025, around 9:30 AM, I was driving my Tacoma on the highway at approximately 70 mph when the truck suddenly lost power. I was in the center lane and nearly got hit as I tried to exit the highway. After exiting, the engine warning light came on, and the truck eventually stalled. I was able to restart it with limited power and drove it to a nearby shop. The shop's diagnosis revealed several warning codes, and the fuel pressure was found to be only 14 psi. They recommended replacing the low-pressure fuel pump. After researching known fuel pump issues, I had the truck towed to a local Toyota dealership. The dealership confirmed the codes but couldn’t replicate the low-pressure reading after driving for about 30 miles. Because of this, they stated that it didn’t qualify for the extended recall offered by Toyota. Toyota refused to replace the pump, arguing that the recall had already been performed in 2020 and that the low pressure reading came from a non-Toyota repair shop. My response was: how can they be sure that the pump replaced under the recall wasn’t faulty as well? No answer In the end, I had no choice but to cover the repair costs myself. However, I made sure to get the old pump back from the dealership and documented its manufacturing details to support my claim moving forward.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL

My 2018 Toyota Tacoma started showing a "forward collision detection system malfunction" "Contact your dealer" light came on that also indicates system is not on/functioning. I went to the dealer and was told the Millimeter Wave Radar Sensor Assembly #88210-04020 wad defective. My replacement cost and labor would be $1,543. I refused the service as I wanted to better understand the issue. I found that the exact item had fallen under a Toyota KOB recall. The same dealer had performed the recall in 2022. I believe the dealer should warranty the recalled part and service. It also appears the recall was performed incorrectly where a backing foam / seal that was to protect the sensor from moisture was installed incorrectly according to the recall recommendations.
