20V033000

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 1998-2000 RAV4, 1998-1999 RAV4 EV and Celica and 1997-1998 Supra vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.

Risk: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag may not properly protect the occupant, and increases the risk of serious injury or death.

PARKING BRAKE:ELECTRICAL

Manual transmission vehicle. The electric parking brake can automatically release when letting the clutch out with the vehicle in neutral if the brake and gas were recently touched. This YouTube video clearly describes the problem: [XXX] This can present a roll away hazard when leaving the vehicle parked with the engine running. With the vehicle in neutral, clutch in, foot on brake, engage the emergency brake, let off the foot brake, touch the throttle, then let off the clutch with the vehicle still in neutral and the emergency brake will release automatically and the vehicle will start rolling away with no feet on any pedals. It appears the vehicle is trying to auto release the parking brake as if you were going to drive away, but the vehicle knows it is in neutral not in 1 or R so this should not occur. The timeout for brake and then throttle though is very long. This dangerous behavior has caused my vehicle to roll away after I shut the engine off on multiple occasions. luckily I noticed before I had exited the vehicle and was able to re-engage the parking brake. There may be other circumstances that trigger this automatic release as well, I'm not sure, but I am always concerned that the brake may turn itself off and my car may roll away. FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

My fuel tank is leaking fuel. I noticed a spot underneath my car in my driveway that is made out of rock and you can smell the fuel. The check engine light is always on and the fuel tank loses mileage and fuel on the telemeter without even driving the vehicle.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

The 2020 - 2025 Toyota Supra is manufactured by BMW and uses virtually all components supplied by BMW. The vehicle includes dual climate controls (driver / passenger) and the temperature of the air from the vents is controlled independently. It is known by BMW that the blend door or the actuator (motor) - which regulates how much cold versus hot air is mixed per the control setting - can break or be deformed. This is a manufacturing defect in the heating unit, not a wear issue. No heat is available to the driver either through the center vent, the left vent, and most importantly from a safety standpoint, the vents at the windshield. This means defrosting or defogging the windshield during winter is virtually impossible because only extremely cold air is available on the driver's side. Since it is made by BMW, the Supra is at risk for the same issue. There are several reports on the internet from Supra owners and many, many from BMW owners who identified the problem and even attempted to create stronger replacement parts. On or about July 26, 2021, NHTSA published two safety recall / service bulletins for BMW and Mini for this problem: SI M64 02 21 and SIB 64 06 21. The cost of repair through Toyota or an independent repair shop is purportedly several thousand dollars because the entire interior dash must be removed to access the heating unit to replace the defective part(s). The Toyota Supra should be subject to the same safety recalls and the repairs should be provided by the dealership or authorized repair shop.

SERVICE BRAKES

The issue appears to be related to the vehicles electronic parking brake for manual transmission vehicles only. When stopping the car and with the car in neutral and engine running, the parking brake is applied per standard operating procedures. However sometimes the parking brake will disengage itself, seemingly at random. This caused a rollaway issue for me twice thinking that the car was in "park" when it wasn't. This was also verified by a Toyota technician during a routine service appointment who documented the issue. There appears to be some chatter about this online with other owners complaining about the issue here: [XXX] Another person on YouTube also documented the issue here: [XXX] I believe this is a very serious issue as a rollaway vehicle can be extremely dangerous for pedestrians. Thank you for your time! INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
