2018 TOYOTA LAND CRUISER Complaints and Recall Information

The 2018 TOYOTA LAND CRUISER has 1 complaint and 5 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report transmission issues related to shift shock and hesitation during low-speed gear changes, which they say affect vehicle control and safety.

Common Issues

  • Shift shock frequency. The transmission hesitates shifting up from 1st to 2nd gear or down from 2nd to 1st at speeds under 15 mph, causing a jarring sensation like being hit from behind.
  • Shift hesitation delay. A 1-2 second delay occurs before the shift shock, especially noticeable when slowing to a stop or accelerating from a stop, increasing risk of collision.
  • Safety risk in traffic. Hesitation during left turns or stop-and-go conditions can cause loss of speed and control, heightening the chance of rear-end crashes or accidents at intersections.
  • Hazardous in slippery conditions. The shift shock and delay can cause loss of control on rain, snow, or ice, impacting driver ability to safely navigate challenging road surfaces.
  • Lack of diagnostic codes. Dealers report no trouble codes despite the transmission hesitation being a repeated issue, complicating repair and diagnosis efforts.

There are 5 recalls for the 2018 Land Cruiser addressing multiple systems including airbags, seat belts, and the fuel pump. These recalls affect critical safety components that could impact injury risk in crashes and engine operation reliability.

Recalls

  • Passenger air bag inflator. (NHTSA recall 18V887000) About 89,740 vehicles are affected by a defect where the seat belt tension sensor wire harness may break, deactivating the front passenger air bag, knee air bag, and seat-mounted side airbag. This increases injury risk in a crash. Toyota will notify owners and repair or replace the seat belt assembly free of charge.
  • Occupant classification sensor. (NHTSA recall 18V887000) The same wire harness problem also affects the occupant classification sensor, potentially disabling air bag deployment. Dealers will modify or replace the sensor assembly as needed.
  • Front seat belts. (NHTSA recall 18V887000) Seat belts may malfunction due to the wire harness break, compromising restraint effectiveness. Toyota offers free repairs to fix or replace the assembly for 89,740 vehicles.
  • Fuel pump failure. (NHTSA recall 20V682000) The low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank may fail in 2018-2019 Land Cruisers among other models, risking engine stalls while driving. Toyota will replace the fuel pump assembly with an improved part free of charge. No "Do Not Drive" advisory was issued.

Owners facing repeated transmission problems combined with multiple recalls affecting key safety features may have rights under their state lemon law. Those dealing with unresolved repair issues or safety defects should consider consulting a qualified attorney specialized in vehicle warranties and lemon law claims.

POWER TRAIN

2018 Toyota Landcruiser. Potential vehicle crash, injury, damage, loss of value, reduced lifespan & reliabilty. Issue #1 - 2-3 times a month I experience shift shock. The transmission hesitates shifting up between 1->2 gear or down 2->1 gear at less than 15 mph. Depending how far you push the accelerator to force it to shift into gear, the car can shift into gear after hesitating so hard it feels like the vehicle was hit from behind. Dealer checked for codes and nothing was recorded despite being an anomalous event and Toyota having a HISTORY OF SHIFT SHOCK. 2016-2017 Landcruiser and issued a TSB [XXX] Contacted Toyota to report the issue and was told they have not received any reports for my year or later, which is likely untrue. If the ECU/TCU was coded to log shift shock I think they’d have a lot of reports. FYI Toyota is having similar issues with the 2025 Lexus GX550. Issue #2 - shift hesitation of 1-2 seconds before shift shock may result in a crash or injury. Normally experience shift shock slowing down close to a stop in left turn lane to cross oncoming traffic. The pause results in a delay of acceleration that may result in a crash causing injury and damage to property. Transmission hesitation/shift shock can also occur slowing down for a red light changing to green where you almost come to a stop then need to accelerate suddenly. The hesitation may result in the vehicle being rear ended due to loss of speed/control. Issue #3 - shift shock could also result in a crash or loss of control dealing with slippery conditions caused by rain, snow, ice. I live in Colorado and experience all 3.
