2022 TOYOTA COROLLA CROSS Complaints and Recall Information
The 2022 TOYOTA COROLLA CROSS has 13 complaints and 4 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues with the driver seat moving down unexpectedly and engine stalling or shutting off during driving, sometimes accompanied by loss of steering power. Other concerns include malfunctioning moonroof, fuel gauge errors, and coolant bypass valve failures affecting engine performance.
Common Issues
- Driver seat defect. The seat drops from the highest position by one or two levels after a few hours or days, requiring manual readjustment each time.
- Engine stalls and stops. The engine shuts off unexpectedly at stoplights or during use of windshield wipers with auto stop/start engaged, often causing loss of power steering and stranding drivers.
- Steering lockup. Steering wheel becomes unresponsive when engine stalls, creating hazardous conditions especially in traffic or poor weather.
- Coolant bypass valve failure. Valve stuck in closed position causes engine malfunction warnings, overheating, and stalling during acceleration; repairs can be costly and sometimes fail to resolve issue permanently.
- Fuel gauge malfunctions. Gauge intermittently fails to show full fuel level after refilling, returning to normal after additional driving or refueling.
- Engine maintenance alerts. Warning lights activate due to coolant bypass valve defects even after routine servicing.
- Moonroof malfunction. Fails to close properly and lacks adequate sensors to stop or reverse sliding, leading to water intrusion during washing.
There are 4 recalls related to the 2022 Corolla Cross, all involving the instrument panel and frontal airbag systems. These recalls address defects that impact airbag deployment and compliance with federal safety standards.
Recalls
- Instrument cluster and air bags. Recall 23V384000 affects 96,007 vehicles. The instrument panel may lack required perforation, preventing proper front-passenger airbag deployment and increasing injury risk during crashes. Dealers will inspect and replace the panel if needed. Owner notifications began July 10, 2023. No drive restrictions included.
- Instrument cluster and air bags follow-up. Recall 23V864000 covers 12,575 vehicles previously inspected under recall 23V384000. Some vehicles require additional inspection and possible replacement of the instrument panel to ensure airbag deployment compliance. Owner notifications were sent January 26, 2024. No drive restrictions included.
Owners dealing with repeated stalling, safety system malfunctions, or unresolved recall repairs may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Consulting an attorney who specializes in motor vehicle defects could help protect their interests.

under normal driving conditions on a state highway the Engine Malfunction error displayed on my Multi-Information Display. The error indicated that I find a dealership and have the car inspected. The error would go off then come back during acceleration. after two days at the local Toyota Dealership I was told the Coolant Bypass Valve was stuck in the closed position and it would have caused stalling during acceleration and engine overheating at normal speeds. the dealership replaced the valve and flushed the 100K coolant at my expense of over $800. The issue reappeared moments after I took delivery of the repaired vehicle as I was accelerating onto the highway from their parking lot. this is a well known issue that affects 2019-2023 Camry and RAv4 models and I believe the 2022 Corolla Cross has the same defective part in its engine (all engines come from Japan) no matter where the vehicle is assembled.

It was around 7pm. It was raining & wipers were on. Auto stop/start setting is on. I was at a stop light waiting to turn left. The light turns green and I try to go, but the engine stalled. I was unable to move forward into the lane, and turn the wheel. A sign on the dashboard showed up saying "engine stopped, steering power low". I try to the turn the wheel and was unable to, I tried to turn off the engine and the car shuts off. I turn the key again to start the car but it wasn't starting. It was about 3 min until the car engine throttles on and I pull over to the left into the parking lot. It was really scary. I managed to get home, which was less than a mile away. Grateful I got home. My safety was at risk at a busy and rainy intersection. Many cars went around me.

I was driving on [XXX] in Miami, FL. As I stopped at a red light, the STOP/START process powered the car down. Then, all systems turned off. I put the car in park and turned the key, the engine would not turn over. I was stranded in the middle of traffic. To no avail, I tried to start the engine at least five times. Strangers helped me to push the car to the side of the road. After about 15 minutes, the car turned on weakly. I drove immediately to the Toyota dealership. The engine stopped and a warning sign came on saying the engine is stopped. \ power fluid low/ The steering wheel also would not turn. I had to put my hazard lights on, put the car in park and then restart the car.. this could be dangerous if I had been on the freeway.
