2016 TOYOTA CAMRY Complaints and Recall Information

The 2016 TOYOTA CAMRY has 7 complaints and 2 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report engine stalling issues linked to electrical problems and mechanical failures. Additional complaints include radio malfunctions and airbag deployment failures following accidents.

Common Issues

  • Engine stalling. The engine quits running when headlights, turn signals, or wipers are turned on, caused by bad electrical grounding points requiring costly repairs.
  • Shaft problems. Owners report dangerous shaft issues affecting vehicle operation.
  • Engine pull broke. The broken engine pull causes stalling and inability to move the vehicle forward, presenting a safety hazard while driving.
  • Radio failure. Radios stop functioning entirely during vehicle use.
  • Airbag non-deployment. Airbags failed to deploy in a front and rear collision, resulting in the total loss of the vehicle.

Two recalls have been issued affecting various vehicle systems including labeling and occupant classification sensor functionality. The recalls address safety compliance and deployment of airbag systems.

Recalls

  • Load carrying capacity label. NHTSA recall 16V420000 affects 4,253 vehicles. The label for load carrying capacity may be incorrect, leading to potential vehicle overloading and increased crash risk. SET will provide a corrected label free of charge with no immediate driving restrictions.
  • Occupant classification sensor. NHTSA recall 16V215000 affects 58,515 vehicles. The occupant classification system may be improperly calibrated causing front passenger airbags and knee airbags to fail deploying in some crashes. Toyota will recalibrate the system free of charge starting May 2016 with no driving restrictions advised.

Owners facing repeated engine stalling, electrical failures, or unresolved airbag recall issues may have rights under their state lemon law. It may be advisable to review repair histories and recall completions to evaluate eligibility for consumer protections.

AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2016 Avalon and Camry vehicles manufactured November 30, 2015 to March 4, 2016. The occupant classification system (OCS) that activates or deactivates the front passenger seat air bag system may have been improperly calibrated. As a result, the front passenger air bag and the front passenger knee air bag may not deploy as intended in certain crash scenarios. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

Risk: Air bags that do not deploy as intended during a crash increase the risk of injury.

EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS

Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain model year 2016 Toyota Camry and Highlander, 2015-2016 Toyota Tundra, Scion FR-S, and tC vehicles. The Load Carrying Capacity Modification Label may not reflect the correct added weight of the installed accessories. As a result, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims for Passenger Cars."

Risk: An incorrect label may lead an owner to overload the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

VISIBILITY/WIPER

The engine quit running whenever the headlights, turn signals, or wipers were turned on. This was obviously a serious safety problem when driving! It began intermittently on 6/30/25, but it became a consistent problem by 7/7/25, so I took the car to the closest Toyota Dealership for evaluation. I can provide their service report to you if requested. It took them 6 hours and $1000 to diagnose the problem as bad electrical grounding points (high resistance), which were only revealed after they removed the front bumper. In my opinion, it is an unsafe design to have poor grounding for headlights cause the engine to die.
