2009 THOMAS BUILT BUSES SAF-T-LINER HDX Complaints and Recall Information

The 2009 THOMAS BUILT BUSES SAF-T-LINER HDX has 0 complaints and 14 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to engine and engine cooling systems, adaptive mobility equipment, air conditioners, and structural door components according to recall data.

There are 14 recalls affecting various systems on these buses, including engine controls, air conditioning units, wheelchair lifts, emergency door handles, and fire extinguishers. The recalls address safety risks such as unexpected vehicle shutdowns, potential fires, malfunctioning wheelchair lifts, and emergency exit problems.

Recalls
  • Engine software malfunction. (NHTSA 10V468000, 11V172000) Defective engine software in buses with Detroit Diesel MBE 900 engines causes improper reactions to aftermarket treatment device fault codes. Risks include unexpected vehicle shutdown or failure to shutdown during overheating, raising crash and fire hazards. Repairs include free software updates by Detroit Diesel covering 3,162 vehicles.
  • Air conditioner fuse arcing. (NHTSA 11V222000, 11V223000) Carrier GENV EM-1 evaporator units may develop fuse holder loosening from heat and vibration, causing high resistance and arcing. This can melt the fuse holder and lead to bus fires. About 6,895 vehicles are involved. Repairs provide retrofit kits and instructions free of charge.
  • Wheelchair lift roll stop defect. (NHTSA 12V225000, 12V226000) Braun Century-2 and Vista-2 wheelchair lifts have roll stop latches that can bend or misalign with use. This allows wheelchair occupants to bypass or ride over the latch, risking falls and injury when the lift platform is elevated. Free repairs by authorized dealers cover roughly 990 buses.
  • Emergency door handle corrosion. (NHTSA 15V425000, 15V432000) Corrosion may occur on the stem connecting the emergency door handle to its mechanism, compromising door operation and slowing evacuation during emergencies. Over 106,000 buses are included. Dealers will replace or protect parts at no cost.
  • Wheelchair lift folding link arms. (NHTSA 15V564000, 15V565000) Certain Ricon wheelchair lifts have pivot holes too large, allowing bearings to displace. This can cause the lift platform to move excessively or fail, with risk of it detaching when doors open and causing operator injury. About 4,386 vehicles are affected. Dealer inspections and part replacements are free.
  • Intake manifold sensor freeze. (NHTSA 14V079000, 14V080000) Condensation in the intake manifold may freeze in cold weather, interfering with pressure sensor operation on Cummins Westport engines. Sensors malfunctioning can cause elevated exhaust temperatures or flames, increasing fire and burn risks. Around 3,985 buses are subject to this defect. Repairs involve ECM calibration updates at no cost.
  • Crankcase vent tube detachment. (NHTSA 15V344000) The 90-degree elbow on the engine crankcase vent tube may detach, allowing oil to contact hot surfaces and increase fire risk. Covered vehicles number 746. Dealers secure the vent tube and reprogram engine software for crankcase pressure control free of charge.
  • Fire extinguisher malfunction. (NHTSA 18V083000) Kidde fire extinguishers installed in some buses may clog, need excessive force to discharge, or have nozzles that detach, causing injury and fire safety failure. This defect affects 606 vehicles. Owners are instructed to contact Kidde for free replacements starting March 2018.

Owners of 2009 THOMAS BUILT BUSES SAF-T-LINER HDX who face repeated repairs, unresolved recalls, or ongoing safety system problems may want to explore their rights under state lemon laws. Legal counsel familiar with vehicle defects can provide guidance on potential claims.

Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2002-2017 Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner C2, Saf-T-Liner HDX, FS65, and Minotour school buses, equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf

Risk: In the event of a fire, if the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury.

EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY

Daimler Trucks North America LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain model year 2006-2015 Thomas Built Buses FS-65, Saf-T-Liner C2, Saf-T-Liner EF, Saf-T-Liner EFX, Saf-T-Liner HDX, and Minotour DRW school buses manufactured January 3, 2006, to August 1, 2014, and equipped with certain Ricon model S2005, S2010, S5005, S5010, S5505, S5510 wheelchair lifts. The affected lifts are equipped with folding link arms that may have pivot holes that are too big, allowing the bearings to move out of position.

Risk: If the bearings move out of position, the stowed platform may have excessive movement resulting in failure of the platform mounting. This failure could cause the wheel chair lift platform to fall out of the vehicle when the doors are opened, increasing the risk of injury for the lift operator.
