  • Engine grid heater short circuit. Recall 10V340000 involves 5,445 buses from model years 2007 to 2011 with specific MBE900 EPA04 and EPA07 engines. Excessive internal temperatures may cause the intake air grid heater to short circuit. This could result in fire and injury. Repairs will be done by authorized Detroit Diesel repair facilities free of charge.
  • Seat cushion hinge tolerance. Recall 10V058000 covers 100 buses made from October 2009 through January 2010. Lateral slipping of the cushion can disengage the latch striker. Unlatching during a crash or sudden maneuver exposes the seat frame, possibly causing injury. Thomas Built Bus dealerships will perform repairs free of charge.
  • Driver seat weld failure (small batch). Recall 10V487000 applies to 6 non-school buses built from March through December 2009 with Stabilus Bloc-O-Lift driver seats. Improper welds can cause the mounting tab to break, potentially causing the seat to drop without warning. This can lead to momentary loss of steering and a crash risk. Repairs available free through authorized dealers.
  • Driver seat weld failure (larger batch). Recall 10V486000 affects 294 buses including MVP-EF, HDX, and Saf-T-Liner C2 models from the same build period as above. Identical defect and risk description involving Stabilus Bloc-O-Lift seats. Repairs by Thomas Built authorized facilities free of charge.
  • Expanded engine grid heater defect. Recall 11V455000 covers 43 vehicles including 2005 through 2012 Thomas Built HDX buses. Short circuit risk caused by intake air grid heater failure due to heat. Fire and injury risk persists. This recall expands prior campaign 10V340000 with free dealer repairs performed by Detroit Diesel authorized centers.

THE INTAKE AIR GRID HEATER MAY SHORT CIRCUIT AND FAIL DUE TO EXCESSIVE INTERNAL TEMPERATURES.

THE WELD WHICH HOLDS THE MOUNTING TAB TO THE SHOCK BODY WAS IMPROPERLY WELDED AND CAN BREAK.

Risk: THE SEAT COULD DROP UNEXPECTEDLY WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING AND COULD CAUSE MOMENTARY LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A CRASH.

THE BUSES FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 222, "SCHOOL BUS PASSENGER SEATING AND CRASH PROTECTION." SEAT CUSHION HINGE TOLERANCE MAY ALLOW THE CUSHION TO SLIP LATERALLY CAUSING THE LATCH STRIKER TO BECOME DISENGAGED FROM THE SEAT FRAME. ONCE THE SEAT CUSHION BECOMES UNLATCHED IT CAN BE LIFTED WITH LESS FORCE THAN REQUIRED BY THE STANDARD.

Risk: IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH OR SUDDEN MANEUVER, THE SEAT CUSHION MAY UNLATCH EXPOSING THE SEAT FRAME TO THE VEHICLE'S OCCUPANTS POSSIBLY RESULTING IN INJURY.

BUSWEST IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2011 HDX SCHOOL BUSES BUILT ON THOMAS BUILT CHASSIS FROM OCTOBER 6, 2009 THROUGH JANUARY 25, 2010 EQUIPPED WITH SEATS MANUFACTURED BY IMMI. THE SEAT CUSHION LOCKING MECHANISMS WERE MISALIGNED DURING VEHICLE ASSEMBLY. THIS ERROR RENDERS THE SCHOOL BUSES NONCOMPLIANT WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 222, "SCHOOL BUS PASSENGER SEATING AND CRASH PROTECTION."

Risk: IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE SEAT CUSHION COULD DETACH FROM THE SEAT, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE BUS OCCUPANTS.
