ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:ALTERNATOR/GENERATOR/REGULATOR

Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. (Suzuki) is recalling certain model year 2012-2016 DL650 motorcycles manufactured August 30, 2011, to October 12, 2015. In the affected motorcycles, the alternator stator may have insufficient heat resistance, resulting in a short circuit of the stator wires.

Risk: A short circuit of the stator wires may prevent the battery from properly charging, causing an engine stall and increasing the risk of a crash.

Contamination from component production and storage combined with manufacturing variations may result in excessive tappet and camshaft wear within the engines of the affected motorcycles.

Risk: The excessive wear may result in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH

SUZUKI IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2012 AN400, AN650, AND DL650 SCOOTERS AND MOTORCYCLES MANUFACTURED PRIOR TO DECEMBER 17, 2011, BECAUSE THE LEVER-MOUNTED BRAKE LIGHT ACTUATING SWITCH(ES) MAY FAIL.

Risk: ON THE AN400 AND AN650 MODELS, FAILURE OF THE SWITCHES WILL PREVENT THE SCOOTERS FROM STARTING. ON ALL OF THE AFFECTED MODELS, FAILURE OF THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH(ES) MAY CAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO NOT ILLUMINATE WHEN A SCOOTER OR MOTORCYCLE IS BRAKING, THEREBY INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH WITH A TRAILING VEHICLE.

SERVICE BRAKES

This motorcycle has been garage kept. It is in mint condition with 2114 miles on the odometer. It was purchased new in 2018. In 2024 the ABS light on the instrumentation illuminated. I tested the brakes to see if the ABS still worked, but it does not work. The rear tire can be locked up to skid, and the ABS does nothing. It used to work in years prior, as I had tested it in the past by applying heavy rear brakes. According to the manual, the error code #35 indicates a faulty ABS unit. The trouble-shooting is to test for 12 volts at the connector to the ABS unit. I put the bike into service mode, I got error code 35, and I tested the voltage to the unit and it was over 12 volts. I went online and discovered that ABS units failing on this motorcycle is not a rare event. I also learned that the old ABS unit 55610-28K00 has been superseded with part number 55610-2K01. This would indicate an issue with the earlier unit. The replacement cost is list price of $986.42, sale price of $828.59. This part can be found under "Hydraulic Unit" on the OEM parts schematic. Non-functioning ABS, especially on the front wheel, can be very dangerous and lead to serious injury or death during an emergency brake application on a motorcycle. I contacted Suzuki Motors of America. They have no recall on the ABS unit, and they offered no assistance due to the warranty being expired. Yet they have a new part number, replacing the old part for some reason. They must be aware of a high failure rate of the original ABS unit. I feel that it is very irresponsible for Suzuki Motors to send out motorcycles with faulty ABS units and not do something to remedy the dangerous situation this creates. The consumer's only option at this point is to have the ABS unit replaced at well over $1000 when factoring in taxes and labor charges. If you can, please check to find out how many ABS units they have sold due to this issue. Thank you.
