2009 STERLING 9500 Complaints and Recall Information

The 2009 STERLING 9500 has 0 complaints and 5 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to the engine and engine cooling systems. Problems documented in recalls involve engine shutdown, fire risks from electrical components, fuel leaks, and air tank mounting hardware failures.

There are five recalls affecting several systems primarily related to engine function, fuel safety, and equipment mounting components.

Recalls
  • Engine shutdown defect. NHTSA recall 10V112000 affects 16 vehicles. The engine may shut down unexpectedly when detecting a diesel particulate filter over temperature condition. This risk could interfere with emergency rescue operations. The remedy reprograms engine control logic to illuminate a malfunction indicator without shutting down the engine. Repairs are performed by Detroit Diesel free of charge.
  • Intake air grid heater fire risk. Recalls 10V341000 and 11V146000 impact 5743 and 2073 vehicles respectively. Certain MBE900 and MBE4000 engines have intake air grid heaters that may short circuit due to high temperatures, posing a fire risk. Owners will be notified and authorized dealers will repair the defect at no cost. The latter recall is linked to the earlier 10V341000 campaign.
  • Fuel line leak hazard. Recall 12V074000 affects 103,437 vehicles. The high pressure fuel line support system may loosen during service, causing fuel line cracks and leaks. Fuel leaks risk creating hazards on the road and potential fires near ignition sources. The fix replaces the fuel line support system as needed free of charge by authorized service centers.
  • Air tank mounting bracket failure. Recall 12V405000 involves 1663 vehicles. The brackets may crack, potentially causing air tanks to separate from the vehicle. Detached air tanks present road debris hazards that increase crash risk. Dealers will replace mounting brackets at no cost after owner notification.

Owners with repeated repairs or unresolved safety recalls for the 2009 STERLING 9500 might have protections under their state’s lemon law. Consulting a consumer protection attorney can help clarify rights and options related to defective vehicles and persistent issues.

EQUIPMENT

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) is recalling certain model year 2009-2012 Freightliner, Sterling, and Western Star vehicles manufactured from July 7, 2008, through December 15, 2011, and equipped with perpendicular air tank mounting brackets. The air tank mounting brackets may develop cracks which can lead to the air tank brackets separating from the frame rail. The air tanks may also separate from the vehicle.

Risk: Air tanks that become separated from a moving vehicle may create a road debris hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.
