2009 SCION XD Complaints and Recall Information
The 2009 SCION XD has 3 complaints and 5 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report a dangerous weld failure at the rear passenger side crossmember subframe axle causing the wheel to angle inward. The failure involves the weld between the beam and suspension plate, raising safety concerns if it occurs during driving.
Common Issues
- Rear weld failure. The weld holding the rear crossmember subframe axle breaks completely on the passenger side, causing the wheel to angle inward dangerously.
- Weld stress signs. The opposite weld on the rear crossmember shows signs of stress though it has not yet broken or cracked.
The vehicle has 5 recalls affecting various systems including labeling, power window switches, and seat components.
Recalls
- Tire labeling defect. NHTSA recall 10V035000 affected 271,417 vehicles. Vehicles sold between 2005 and 2008 lacked load carrying capacity labels required by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 110. Missing labels increase the risk of overloading. Dealers will mail corrected labels or install them free of charge.
- Power window switch overheating. Recall 12V491000 covered 2,519,424 vehicles including this model. Master switches use inconsistent lubrication, causing malfunctions and potential overheating that may result in fire. Dealers will inspect switches, apply special grease, or replace damaged switches free of charge.
- Tire labeling defect. Recall 10V036000 impacted 153,418 vehicles for missing tire load capacity labels, increasing crash risk. Corrective labels will be mailed or installed by dealers at no cost.
- Power window switch lubrication. Recall 15V689000 involved 1,814,284 vehicles. Lubricant application in power window master switches may be inconsistent, causing switch overheating and fire potential. Dealers will inspect switches, apply lubricant, or replace circuit boards free of charge beginning late 2015.
- Seat rail spring breakage. Recall 14V169000 affected 472,388 vehicles manufactured 2006-2010. Driver and front passenger seat rail springs may break, preventing seats from locking and increasing injury risk in a crash. Dealers will inspect and replace seat rails as needed at no cost.
Owners with repeated repairs, persistent safety defects, or unresolved recall issues may have rights under their state lemon law and should consider consulting an attorney for guidance.

VISIBILITY:POWER WINDOW DEVICES AND CONTROLS
Toyota Motor Company (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2009-2011 Tundra, Sequoia, Corolla, Corolla Matrix and Scion xB, 2008-2011 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, 2007 Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2009 Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2006-2011 RAV4, 2006-2010 Yaris, and 2009-2010 Scion xD and Pontiac Vibe vehicles. During the manufacturing of the Power Window Master Switch (PWMS), grease lubricant may have been inconsistently applied to the sliding electrical contacts.
Risk: If the sliding electrical contacts are not protected by lubricant, debris and moisture that get into the switch may cause a short circuit and the switch assembly may overheat and melt, increasing the risk of a fire.

SEATS
Toyota is recalling certain model year 2006-2010 Yaris vehicles manufactured August 22, 2005, through May 12, 2010, and 2008-2010 Scion xD vehicles manufactured April 4, 2007, through May 12, 2010. In the affected vehicles, the springs used for the seat rails on the driver's seat and the seat rails of the front passenger seat of three-door models may break.
Risk: If the spring breaks, the seat may not lock in position. In the event of a vehicle crash, the seat could move increasing the risk of injury to the seat occupant.

VISIBILITY:POWER WINDOW DEVICES AND CONTROLS
Toyota is recalling certain model year 2007-2009 Camry, Camry Hybrid, RAV4, Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Tundra, Sequoia, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Yaris, Scion xB, Scion xD and Pontiac Vibe vehicles. The power window master switch assemblies in some of these vehicles were built using a less precise process for lubricating the internal components of the switch assemblies. Irregularities in this lubrication process may cause the power window master switch assemblies to malfunction and overheat.
Risk: If the switch overheats, it may melt, possibly resulting in a fire.

ID: 2083912UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Drove car and heard loud noise issuing from the passenger side rear. Upon viewing the wheel was angled in at the top. After removing the wheel I found the rear crossmember subframe axle had a complete break in the weld holding the angle from the straight part of the beam to the wheel and suspension plate. After going online to see if similar issues happen on the same side of the vehicle, I found many reports of weld failures on the same side at the same joint. This is an EXTREMELY dangerous weld failure--if it had happened during highway travel the potential for catastrophic injury or death is high, in my opinion. Please investigate other reports to the NTSB about this make and model, and please search model years on or about 2007-2012 as other scion owners have had the same issue. This is a one owner car, we purchased it new in 2009. The opposite weld is also showing signs of stress, but not broken or cracked.
