There are seven recalls affecting various systems on the 2022 PROTERRA ZX5. These recalls address defects primarily involving electrical components, braking systems, steering gearboxes, and visibility equipment.
Recalls- Electrical system overheating. NHTSA recall 24V655000 affects 483 vehicles. The vehicle controller software may allow the radiator fan circuit to overheat, increasing fire risk. Dealers will update the software free of charge.
- Windshield wiper motor failure. NHTSA recall 23V078000 affects 252 vehicles. The wiper motors can operate intermittently or fail, reducing visibility and increasing crash risk. Dealers will replace the motors at no cost.
- Inverter transistor overheating. NHTSA recall 23V697000 affects 238 vehicles. A transistor inside the inverter may overheat and fail, causing loss of power steering and drive power, raising crash risk. Dealers will replace the inverter free of charge.
- Unintended parking brake engagement. NHTSA recall 22V855000 affects 386 vehicles. Back pressure in the air exhaust may cause the parking brake to engage while the bus is moving, increasing crash risk. Proterra will install a redesigned air circuit at no cost.
- Missing interlock override switch. NHTSA recall 22V829000 affects 3 vehicles. The absence of the switch could prevent the driver from overriding the interlock system to move the bus, requiring passenger transfers and increasing injury risk. Dealers will provide installation instructions and the switch free of charge.
- Loose steering gearbox bolts. NHTSA recall 22V114000 affects 724 vehicles. Insufficient adhesive may cause bolts securing the steering gearbox to loosen, risking loss of steering control. Dealers will install new fasteners, bolts, and torque plates as needed at no cost.
Owners facing repeated repairs or unresolved recall issues involving safety systems or steering components may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Consultation with a qualified attorney can assist in understanding available options.

PARKING BRAKE
Proterra Operating Company, Inc. (Proterra) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Catalyst and 2019-2022 ZX5 transit buses. Back pressure in the shared air exhaust for the pneumatic ride height system and parking brake control valve may engage the parking brake while the vehicle is in motion.
Risk: Unintentional engagement of the parking brake increases the risk of a crash.
2022 PROTERRA ZX5
724 vehicles affected
STEERING:GEAR BOX (OTHER THAN RACK AND PINION)
Proterra, Inc. (Proterra) is recalling certain 2017-2019 35 foot Catalyst E2, 2017-2019 40 foot E2, 2020-2021 35 foot RR, 2019-2020 40 foot RR, 2019-2022 40 foot ZX5, and 2020-2022 35 foot ZX5 buses. The plexus adhesive between the torque limiter plate and the bus body may be insufficient, causing the bolts that secure the steering gearbox to loosen.
Risk: A loose steering gearbox can cause a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
