BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA

On September 7, 2025, I had a total failure of the forward looking radar system in the vehicle. The symptoms were an error "Collision Avoidance system unavailable" and symbol on the driver display after starting the vehicle, and attempting to activate cruise control (which is typically adaptive cruise control) results in an "Unavailable" error. The symptom occurred suddenly after an otherwise unremarkable drive cycle, and the radar sensor appears to be free of any obstructions. This renders an otherwise key safety feature of the vehicle in reducing the chance of a forward collision completely inoperable, and due to service backlogs, I am unable to have the issue addressed by the dealer/service provider for at least a month, meaning the vehicle will remain stuck in this state until then. Prior to this, I have received "Camera temporarily unavailable" errors when in reverse (inhibiting the backup camera feature from operating as intended), even after updating to the latest software version as indicated by the most recent safety recall notice. I've also received very intermittent errors around the blind spot sensor/rear auto-brake/park assist system -- and these three errors occur at the same time -- but I have not seen this error either in the days before or after receiving the collision avoidance system unavailable error.

The backup camera is unavailable when reversing.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA

This is a follow up to repairs made under previous recall number 25V-280; 'camera is temporarily unavailable' error when the car is operated in reverse. Despite being on the most recent version of the infotainment software (v 3.6.4) this problem persists in my vehicle. On many occasions since the most recent software update the rear view camera displays the error message (as above). This occurs at least as often as it did before the latest software update, several times per week during normal use. I have documented a few of these on 2/27/2025, 7/4/2025, 7/20/2025, 7/24/2025/ 7/27/2025, 7/30/2025, 8/2/2025, 8/30/2025. These are not the only instances but reflect the continuing pattern of cameral issues over the time since the latest software update.

The reverse camera continues to fail regularly, especially within the first few minutes of using the vehicle. I shift to reverse, and rather than seeing the video from the reverse camera, I see the message "Camera is temporarily unavailable" or something to that effect. My car is updated to the most recent software (version 3.6.4) which I believe was intended to fix this issue as a recall, but there has been no improvement.

I wanted to bring to your attention an ongoing issue with the backup camera functionality. Despite updating the car software to version 3.6.4 as per the last recall, the backup camera still frequently shows "camera unavailable" when placing the vehicle into reverse. It seems that the problem remains unresolved even after following the recommended update per the recall.

Following the most recent software update, the rear camera continues to fail to activate nearly 50% of the time. Additionally, the safety systems fail regularly when the infotainment system requires a hard reset, thus all safety alerts, front, rear, side do not activate as expected. Following the latest Over The Air software update to version 3.6.4, "Backup Camera Unavailable" error has become much worse, and almost constant. It will flash on and off, sometimes reverting to the 360 degree view, and sometimes not. It often starts to work and then cuts out again after I start reversing out of my garage. With over two dozen children living in our neighborhood, including our own, there are frequently kids, bikes and toys in our driveway, so this feels like a very dangerous condition.

NHTSA Recall notice 25V280. Polestar is trying to charge $800 to tow the vehicle to get this recall because their OTA update never came to the car. I contacted support and they never mentioned this until I tried to set up the tow to get it taken to the service center. Now customer support is not responding to messages and failed to call me back twice. So my car is officially stuck in violation of your recall and Polestar is not fixing the issue in a timely manner.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA

My vehicle was recently subject to a recall to fix a long-standing issue, where the rear camera fails to display on the centre console screen when the vehicle is placed in reverse. Once the vehicle is placed in reverse, the screen flashes and then displays the message "Camera is temporarily unavailable". I reported this to Polestar when it first occurred, and they advised I update the software. This didn't fix the problem I've since received a recall notice and again updated the software (to version 3.6.4). The problem still persists (daily). The software fixes aren't solving this issue and the recall should be investigated and re-issued with an actual fix.

LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LOCK

When using the key fob to unlock the car, I have to push the unlock button 30-40 times before the car unlocks. When locking the car after using it, it usually locks the first time pushing the button on the key fob, but definitely locks after 3-4 presses. This is an issue because I am often parked on the side of the road, and when I'm pressing the button many times, I'm often standing at the door waiting for it to unlock while traffic drives past me because I can't get in the car. I will also pull the door handle, because the car has proximity sensors to unlock, but that also doesn't work right when I walk up to the car. So I usually stand at the driver's door pressing the key fob and pulling on the door handle until it unlocks. The only other issue with the car is the backup camera becoming unavailable when first turning on the car. I'm not sure if these are in any way related.

The vehicle’s rear view camera continues to be unstable, even after the recent NHTSA-mandated software recall was installed. This recall DID NOT fix the issue. Ultimately, the vehicle’s computer hardware is underpowered and cannot run the latest software versions sufficiently, and that is the root of the flickering and crashing that occurs. Besides the rear view camera cutting out and saying “temporarily unavailable” the car’s automatic emergency braking system often mistakenly slams on the brakes, and because it’s controlled through the rear camera interface, you cannot safely disable it when these erroneous braking events occur as the screen becomes unresponsive or slow to respond.

Polestars have had 2 recalls for rear view cameras not engaging upon being placed in reverse. My car has been through 2 of these recalls with the most recent being 1-2 weeks ago. The issue still remains and persists, in fact it only got worse after the last recall. I cannot trust my camera as it constantly crashes, freezes or just outright does not work. It is clear that polestar is incapable of fixing this issue via OTA or software updates as they have failed to do so twice now. I kindly ask that NHTSA looks into this issue and calls upon polestar to upgrade the infotainment systems in our cars, it is clear that they are incapable of handling the rearview camera as they are now. Here is a video showcasing the issue, the car is in reverse on the latest update post the second recall. I recently received an OTA update for my 2021 Polestar 2. The update was supposed to fix a known rear view camera issue which presents as an error message on the infotainment screen, instead of the rear camera view. I am still experiencing the error message when putting the car into reverse.

1. Poorly designed suspension system. Rough ride, clunking suspension, wooden plank ride, excessive interior noise due to unknown or undiagnosed issues. 2. Rear camera failure during backing up. This has been submitted as a recall to NHTSA as an update 3.6.4 by Polestar but it has not resolved the backup camera failure. The hardware in 2021-2025 vehicles is underpowered and incapable of processing information quickly enough to support rear camera activation on demand. Recommend Polestar UPGRADE the head units on all cars in the US to provide safe backup camera availability.

The backup camera remains unstable, unreliable, and out of spec per FVMSS111. Issues are frequent, varied, and include: Severely delayed activation upon switching to R, "Camera unavailable", unexpectedly switching from reverse to 360 view, frozen frame, complete IHU reboot (entirely black screen.) My vehicle was updated for both previous recalls (2024 and now 2025) and the issues remain. In fact, they are now more frequent and problematic with software 3.6.4 which was supposed to fix this.

Despite multiple software updates to address rear view camera display issues, I still run into the same “rear camera unavailable” message when the car takes too long to bring up the rear camera feed when shifting the vehicle into reverse. The whole software bogs down and gets laggy, and the camera flickers a few times before a black screen taking over and the message popping up. This completely takes away rear visibility to see obstacles or traffic behind me when reversing. Which is why rear view cameras have been mandated for safety. Polestar has issued several software updates and recalls to fix this issue but it still persists. The issue isn’t the software it’s the processing power of the head unit to open the camera and run the necessary software.

The back up camera continues to suffer from frequent bugs- where when engaging reverse the back up camera system displays a message : "back up camera unvailable," This has been an known and ongoing issue with Polestar 2, and even with the most recent software update that was supposed to address the issue, it still occurs. It occurs specifically when the car has been sitting for a while- when engaging reverse, the issue happens. If the car has been in use, the system usually operates normally.

The backup camera on this vehicle is very unreliable. Often upon selecting reverse, it will take too long to display the camera view, then it will stutter and flicker for a few moments before finally giving up with the message "Camera is temporarily unavailable". This model was recalled by the Polestar for this issue (25V-280), and Polestar attempted to work around the issue with software updates multiple times (3.1.9 and 3.6.4) but they still have not resolved the problem even with the most recent software. This has been a well-known issue on a number of Volvo models as well which share software with the Polestar, and they were also recently recalled for the same issue (25V-282). It is possible this issue has also not been resolved for those vehicles.

[XXX] After the car automatically switches to my user profile when I open the door, I sit in the driver’s seat and shift into reverse. At that point, the reverse camera fails to load, and an error message is displayed. Additionally, the on-screen sensor visualization (which normally shows proximity to obstacles) does not appear, making all reverse-assist features unavailable. This issue consistently occurs when the profile switch happens automatically—manual profile switching has not been tested. Tapping the camera icon and re-enabling the camera works, but it's a safety issue when in an active parking lot, or around pedestrians. The rear view camera in the car will say that it is unavailable about 30% of the time. The center screen just displays "Camera unavailable" despite it being a legal requirement for it to work. This is a constantly recurring issue, not a one off instance, the car also stops all cross traffic alerts due to the error, I have also had instances where the rearview camera will show up but it is completely frozen and the video does not move. I reported this to my Polestar service center as I am still under warranty and was told that this was normal. I would like to call on nhtsa to do a proper investigation of this, the issue does not happen every time however it happens enough for it to be a danger to everyone around you. I can't trust my rear view camera as sometimes when I start moving the camera will freeze, this leaves me looking at the screen with the car moving and the camera frozen, essentially forcing me to back up COMPLETELY BLIND. The rearview camera in that car does not work, in fact it is a HAZARD as it is so unreliable and prone to freezing. It is a direct violation of 49 CFR § 571.111. This issue has been documented extensively on the forums, updates only make it works and Polestar does not care about the safety of it's own customers.

SUSPENSION

There is a TBS out for a strut mount bearing replacement that causes clunking/rattling of the front suspension while driving on slight rougher roads or while turning left or right. However, this TSB does not solve the issue. Polestar claims they have an updated component/strut mount bearing that solves the clunking issue but it does not. My vehicle has the latest components installed under warranty (due to my vehicle exhibiting this issue) and it has not solved the suspension clunking. At this point, it is safe to say that the strut mount bearings are not the main or only cause of the front suspension clunking. There are other components involved that may be failing or have failed but have not been properly identified by the service centers or Polestar. Polestar does not seem to want to address this issue head on. In their own TSB, their wording is clear that they wish to delay the process of updating components so as to prevent buy backs during warranty periods. It's written in black and white and this seems highly irregular or illegal to have such a business model. We do not know if this issue poses a safety hazard or not but given it's a front suspension issue, it's only a matter of time before a vehicle loses control due to component failure that was not looked into or was not anticipated beyond the strut mount bearings. Please do something to solve this problem. This vehicle (Polestar 2) has been out now for FIVE YEARS and this issue has yet to be resolved.

Polestar has issued several software updates over the past year that have resulted in serious safety issues: A previous software recall for issues with the vehicle's backup camera has not fixed the issue. About 50% of the time, the vehicles backup camera flashes, freezes, and then fails while reversing before eventually displaying a "Backup Camera Not Available" message. The issue is that this all happens while reversing in motion, meaning it's distracting and dangerous. Similarly, the vehicle's automatic emergency rear braking engages erroneously about 20% of the time while revering. This happens when the system is slow to respond and seems to mistake shadows as objects. It has almost resulted in causing a collision twice now while I was driving. On occasion, the passenger side mirror will fail to raise from the folded position preventing the vehicle from driving safely. The manufacturer continues to claim that software updates have or will fix these issues, however none have been resolved. These issues are not unique to my vehicle either, as they are widely reported online. The vehicle's software has serious safety issues and needs to be resolved. Thank you.
