Recalls
  • Service brakes and check valves. Recall 12V026000 affects 15,932 vehicles manufactured from January 31, 2011, through January 19, 2012. Bendix ATR-6 relay valves may leak internally in cold conditions causing continuous brake application. Risk includes overheated brakes, fire hazards, and loss of vehicle control. PACCAR provides a temporary free repair until a permanent fix is available.
  • Seat belts. Recall 13V091000 covers 2,509 trucks with air ride seats. Seat belt buckle cables may fray causing the belt to detach in a crash, increasing injury risk. Dealers replace buckle assemblies free of charge starting May 9, 2013.
  • Driveshaft weld failure. Recall 15V310000 involves 30 trucks, including 2013 PETERBILT 587s manufactured August 8, 2012. Driveshafts may corrode and welds fail, causing loss of power to rear wheels and increased crash risk. Dealers replace driveshafts free of charge starting July 15, 2015.
  • Alternator charge cable chafing. Recall 15V456000 affects 288 vehicles with Leece Neville alternators manufactured January 2011 to April 2015. Alternator cables may rub against metal freon lines causing electrical shorts and fire risk. Dealers reroute cables and add insulation free of charge from September 23, 2015.
  • Fifth wheel locking mechanism failure. Recall 15V641000 includes 290 trucks manufactured February 2011 to December 2012. Damage to the Fontaine Ultra LT fifth wheel locking mechanism may cause trailer detachment. Dealers replace fifth wheel with Ultra NT model starting December 7, 2015.
  • Door pull pad assembly separation. Recall 14V015000 covers 827 trucks with Inteva door pads manufactured May 2012 through October 2013. Loose fasteners can cause door pulls to detach causing fall risk. Dealers inspect and torque fasteners free of charge from March 5, 2014.
  • Alternator cable chafing with Delco-Remy alternators. Recall 15V270000 covers 1,494 trucks manufactured December 2010 to April 2015. Similar to recall 15V456000, cables may short circuit causing fire hazards. Dealers reroute cables free of charge starting September 16, 2015.
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) software defect. Recall 20V199000 affects over 460,000 vehicles equipped with NAMUX software from 2008 to 2019. ABS warning light may fail to illuminate after power loss, increasing crash risk. Dealers update software free of charge since May 26, 2020.
  • ABS warning light failure. Also part of recall 20V199000, the ABS warning light may not alert driver of ABS loss. The risk of unknowingly driving without ABS function increases crash risk. Fix is a free NAMUX software update.
  • Tire and rim certification label errors. Recall 15V132000 involves over 213,000 trucks manufactured 2006 to 2016. Tire pressure listed on labels may be incorrect, leading to underinflation and possible tire failure. Peterbilt mails corrected labels to owners starting June 19, 2015.

Owners with repeated repairs or unresolved safety defects related to these recalls may have rights under their state lemon laws. They should consider consulting legal resources to protect their interests.

PACCAR Incorporated (PACCAR) is recalling certain 2008-2019 Peterbilt 330, 335, 337, 340, 348, 365, 367, 384, 386, 387, 388, 389, 567, 579 and 587 vehicles and 2008-2020 Kenworth T170, T270, T370, T660, T680, T800, T880, and W900 vehicles equipped with NAMUX Software. In the event that the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) loses battery and/or ignition power to the controller, the dash warning light for the ABS may not illuminate to warn the driver of the loss of ABS. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, "Air Brake Systems," and 136, "Electronic Stability Control System on Heavy Vehicles."

Risk: If the driver unknowingly operates the vehicle without the ABS functioning, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

The affected vehicles may be equipped with Tire and Rim Certification Labels that list a tire pressure below the actual correct amount. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 120, "Tire selection and rims and motor home/recreation vehicle trailer load carrying capacity information for motor vehicles with a GVWR of more than 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds)."

Risk: If the tires are underinflated due to the incorrect inflation pressure listed on the label, the truck may not be able to carry the maximum gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) load listed without experiencing tire failure which would increase the risk of a crash.

The affected trucks are equipped with Fontaine Ultra LT Fifth Wheel connectors, which, due to cumulative damage to the fifth wheel and its locking mechanism, have a locking mechanism that may fail to operate or to properly engage.

Risk: If the fifth wheel and locking mechanism are sufficiently damaged, the locking mechanism may fail to operate as intended and the trailer may unexpectedly detach from the tractor, increasing the risk of a crash.
