Recalls
  • Steering column. NHTSA recall 10V308000 affects 9,697 vehicles. The weld on the steering shaft tubes may be mislocated, allowing rotation between tubes, which could cause separation and loss of steering control, increasing crash risk. Dealers will inspect and replace improperly welded shafts free of charge.
  • Axle assembly. NHTSA recall 10V634000 affects 12,873 vehicles. Premature wear of the universal joint in the inter-axle driveline may cause joint failure and driveline detachment. This can lead to power loss and increased crash risk. A free remedy is expected to begin in February 2011.
  • Fuel system oil filter cap. NHTSA recall 11V127000 affects 4,664 vehicles. The oil module centrifugal spinner filter cap may loosen and discharge engine oil onto hot exhaust components, potentially causing a fire. Dealers will re-torque the cap and install a secondary retention device at no cost.
  • Engine software. NHTSA recall 11V380000 affects 211 vehicles. The fast idle control may activate while the transmission is in gear, possibly causing unexpected acceleration that overrides the parking brake. Dealers will update engine software free of charge.
  • Certification labels. NHTSA recall 13V593000 affects 561 vehicles. Required information on tag or pusher axle weight ratings and tire specifications may be missing from labels. This can lead to overloaded axles or improper tires, raising crash risk. Dealers will replace labels with correct information at no cost.
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) software. NHTSA recall 20V199000 affects 460,515 vehicles. Loss of ABS battery or ignition power may fail to trigger the ABS warning light, preventing driver awareness of ABS failure and increasing crash risk. Dealers will update NAMUX software free of charge.
  • ABS warning light. NHTSA recall 20V199000 affects the same 460,515 vehicles as above. The ABS warning light may not illuminate during ABS power loss, increasing crash risk. Dealers will perform the same software update free of charge.

Owners with this vehicle dealing with repeated repairs, unresolved recall remedies, or safety defects may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Consulting a legal professional familiar with consumer protection and lemon law is advisable to understand available options.

POWER TRAIN:AXLE ASSEMBLY

PACCAR IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2007-2008 KENWORTH AND PETERBILT VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM FEBRUARY 2, 2006 THROUGH APRIL 30, 2007. THE BEARING SURFACES OF THE EXTENDED LUBE UNIVERSAL JOINT THAT ATTACHES THE INTER-AXLE DRIVELINE TO THE DRIVE AXLE MAY BECOME PREMATURELY WORN DUE TO BREAKDOWN OF LUBRICATION AND/OR EXCESSIVE HEAT. PREMATURELY WORN BEARING SURFACES MAY RESULT IN THE U-JOINT BECOMING LOOSE AND/OR BINDING. THIS CONDITION MAY RESULT IN UNIVERSAL JOINT FAILURE, ALLOWING THE INTER-AXLE DRIVELINE TO DETACH FROM THE AXLE.

Risk: DETACHMENT OF THE DRIVELINE FROM THE AXLE MAY CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO LOSE POWER AND BECOME DISABLED IN THE ROADWAY. ALSO, THE DRIVELINE COULD DROP FROM THE VEHICLE INTO THE ROADWAY INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

STEERING:COLUMN

PACCAR IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2008-2010 TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH TRW STEERING SHAFTS. THE CIRCUMFERENTIAL WELD AROUND THE STEERING SHAFT TUBE THAT WELDS THE SPLINED TUBE TO THE NON-SPLINED TUBE MAY BE MISLOCATED. MISLOCATION OF THE CIRCUMFERENTIAL WELD MAY ALLOW THE SPLINED TUBE AND NON-SPLINED TUBE TO ROTATE RELATIVE TO ONE ANOTHER DURING A LOW SPEED, HIGH TORQUE TURN, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A SEPARATION OF THE TWO TUBES.

Risk: A SEPARATION OF THE SPLINED AND NON-SPLINED TUBES WOULD CAUSE A LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND INCREASE THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
