2009 PETERBILT 384 Complaints and Recall Information

The 2009 PETERBILT 384 has 0 complaints and 5 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to steering components, fuel system, engine ventilation, and electronic stability control based on recall data. The recalls cover a range of safety and mechanical systems but no owner complaints have been formally recorded.

There are five recalls affecting multiple systems including steering, fuel system, engine, and electronic stability control. These recalls address potential safety hazards such as steering shaft separation, fuel oil leaks, engine fires, and failure of ABS warning lights. Repairs and inspections are provided free of charge by dealers.

Recalls
  • Steering column defect. (NHTSA Recall 10V308000) Approximately 9,697 trucks from model years 2008 to 2010 have a potentially mislocated weld on the TRW steering shaft. This may cause the splined and non-splined tubes to separate under certain torque conditions, resulting in loss of steering control and increased crash risk. Dealers inspect and replace faulty steering shafts free of charge.
  • Fuel system oil leak. (NHTSA Recall 11V127000) Affects 4,664 trucks from 2008 to 2012 equipped with PACCAR MX engines. The oil module centrifugal spinner filter cap may become loose, allowing engine oil to leak onto hot exhaust components and potentially cause fires. Dealers retorque the filter cap and add secondary retention to prevent cap loss.
  • Engine crankcase pressure. (NHTSA Recall 15V309000) Covers 4,823 trucks from 2008 to 2016 with Cummins Westport ISL G engines. Excessive crankcase pressures can cause a vent tube elbow to detach, leaking engine oil onto hot surfaces and increasing fire risk. Repairs include securing the vent tube and updating engine software to limit pressure.
  • Electronic stability control software. (NHTSA Recall 20V199000) Over 460,000 trucks from 2008 to 2019 with NAMUX software face a failure where the ABS warning light may not illuminate if the ABS loses power. This absence of warning increases crash risk as drivers may be unaware of ABS failure. Dealers will update the software to restore proper warning functionality.
  • ABS warning light failure. (NHTSA Recall 20V199000) The same 460,000+ vehicles share this recall related to the ABS warning light malfunction that fails to warn the driver of ABS power loss. The risk of crash increases due to lack of notification. Dealers perform free NAMUX software updates to fix the issue.

Owners with repeated repairs or unresolved safety defects related to these recalls may have rights under state lemon laws. It is advisable to consult legal resources if repairs do not resolve defects or if recall notifications are not acted upon properly.

SERVICE BRAKES, AIR:ANTILOCK:ABS WARNING LIGHT

PACCAR Incorporated (PACCAR) is recalling certain 2008-2019 Peterbilt 330, 335, 337, 340, 348, 365, 367, 384, 386, 387, 388, 389, 567, 579 and 587 vehicles and 2008-2020 Kenworth T170, T270, T370, T660, T680, T800, T880, and W900 vehicles equipped with NAMUX Software. In the event that the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) loses battery and/or ignition power to the controller, the dash warning light for the ABS may not illuminate to warn the driver of the loss of ABS. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, "Air Brake Systems," and 136, "Electronic Stability Control System on Heavy Vehicles."

Risk: If the driver unknowingly operates the vehicle without the ABS functioning, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE

PACCAR Incorporated (PACCAR) is recalling certain model year 2010-2016 Kenworth T440, T800, and W900 trucks manufactured August 31, 2009, to April 20, 2015, and 2008-2015 Peterbilt 320, 337, 348, 365, 382, and 384 trucks manufactured July 27, 2007, to April 28, 2015, and equipped with certain Cummins Westport ISL G engines. Excessive engine crankcase pressures may cause the 90-degree elbow of the vent tube assembly to detach from the crankcase ventilation breather, possibly allowing engine oil to come into contact with hot surfaces.

Risk: If engine oil comes into contact with a hot surface, there is an increased risk of a fire.

FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY

PACCAR IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2008-2012 KENWORTH T2000, T660, T700, T800, AND W900, AS WELL AS MODEL YEAR 2009-2012 PETERBILT 365, 367, 384, 386, 387, 388, 389, AND 587 TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH PACCAR MX ENGINES. THE OIL MODULE CENTRIFUGAL SPINNER FILTER CAP IN THE PACCAR MX ENGINE MAY BECOME LOOSE, POSSIBLY ALLOWING THE CAP TO COME OFF AND ENGINE OIL TO PARTIALLY DISCHARGE FROM THE OIL MODULE ONTO EXHAUST COMPONENTS.

Risk: THE DISCHARGE OF ENGINE OIL ONTO EXHAUST COMPONENTS WHICH ARE HOT, SUCH AS WHEN THE ENGINE IS UNDER SIGNIFICANT LOAD, MAY CAUSE A FIRE.

STEERING:COLUMN

PACCAR IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2008-2010 TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH TRW STEERING SHAFTS. THE CIRCUMFERENTIAL WELD AROUND THE STEERING SHAFT TUBE THAT WELDS THE SPLINED TUBE TO THE NON-SPLINED TUBE MAY BE MISLOCATED. MISLOCATION OF THE CIRCUMFERENTIAL WELD MAY ALLOW THE SPLINED TUBE AND NON-SPLINED TUBE TO ROTATE RELATIVE TO ONE ANOTHER DURING A LOW SPEED, HIGH TORQUE TURN, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A SEPARATION OF THE TWO TUBES.

Risk: A SEPARATION OF THE SPLINED AND NON-SPLINED TUBES WOULD CAUSE A LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND INCREASE THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
