2008 ORION VII Complaints and Recall Information

The 2008 ORION VII has 0 complaints and 5 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to engine and electrical systems through recalls rather than direct complaints. No user-submitted problem reports are available for this model year.

There are five recalls affecting various systems including power train controls, door latches, electrical components, and engine operation. These recalls address defects that increase risks such as unintended acceleration, door malfunctions, fire hazards, and sensor failures.

Recalls
  • Power train throttle control. NHTSA Recall 10V015000 affects 426 buses. The Morse remote throttle control switch may stay in a high RPM position, causing unintended engine acceleration and increasing crash risk. Daimler Buses will provide free wiring modifications. No "Do Not Drive" advisory issued.
  • Door latch assembly. NHTSA Recall 11V214000 affects 2 buses manufactured mid-June 2008. Insufficient engagement in the teeter lever assembly can cause rear exit door malfunction, risking passenger falls. Repairs are provided free of charge by Daimler in coordination with Vapor Bus.
  • Electrical system components. NHTSA Recall 13V476000 covers 3009 units from model years 2003 to 2008. A potting compound in Sure Power equalizers and DC-DC converters conducts electricity after heat exposure, potentially causing melting and fire. Replacement parts will be installed at no cost starting November 2014.
  • Engine crankcase ventilation. NHTSA Recall 15V288000 includes 455 natural gas-powered buses from 2007-2012. A vent tube’s 90-degree elbow may detach, allowing oil contact with hot surfaces which raises vehicle fire risk. Dealers will secure fittings and update ECM software free of charge. No immediate driving restrictions apply.
  • Intake manifold sensor. NHTSA Recall 14V106000 also covers 455 buses with certain Cummins Westport ISL G engines. Condensation may freeze and disrupt pressure sensor function, increasing fire risk from exhaust flames. ECM software will be updated free of charge by authorized service centers.

Owners facing repeated repairs or unresolved safety recalls may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Those dealing with ongoing issues should consider consulting a consumer protection attorney familiar with vehicle defect cases.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE

Daimler Buses North America (DBNA) is recalling certain model year 2007-2012 Orion VII natural gas-powered transit buses manufactured January 1, 2007, to October 1, 2012. Excessive engine crankcase pressures may cause the 90-degree elbow of the vent tube assembly to detach from the crankcase ventilation breather, possibly allowing engine oil to come into contact with hot surfaces.

Risk: If the engine oil comes into contact with hot surfaces, it can increase the risk of a vehicle fire.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE

Daimler Buses North America (DBNA) is recalling certain model year 2007-2012 Orion VII transit buses manufactured January 2007 through October 2012 equipped with certain Cummins Westport Model ISL G engines. Condensation in the intake manifold may freeze during cold weather conditions and interfere with the proper operation of the intake manifold pressure sensor.

Risk: The improper operation of the sensor could induce elevated exhaust temperatures or flames from the exhaust pipe, increasing the risk of a vehicle fire or burn injury to a person near the exhaust pipe.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Daimler Buses North America Ltd. (DBNA) is recalling certain model year 2003-2008 Orion V and model year 2002-2010 VII buses equipped with Sure Power equalizers and DC-DC Converters. The specific potting compound used in the equalizers and convertors for insulation was found to be capable of conducting electricity after being exposed to heat.

Risk: Once electrically conductive, the material is capable of melting and burning, increasing the risk of a fire.

DAIMLER BUSES IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2008 ORION VII TRANSIT BUSES MANUFACTURED FROM JUNE 13-16, 2008, AND EQUIPPED WITH TEETER LEVER ASSEMBLIES. THERE IS INSUFFICIENT ENGAGEMENT BETWEEN THE TEETER LEVER BASE AND THE CAM PLATE.

Risk: FAILURE OF THE TEETER LEVER ASSEMBLY WILL CAUSE THE REAR SIDE EXIT DOOR TO OPERATE IMPROPERLY. A PASSENGER LEANING ON OR FORCED AGAINST THE DOOR COULD FALL THROUGH THE DOOR AND SUSTAIN INJURIES.

DAIMLER BUSES IS RECALLING CERTAIN ORION TRANSIT BUSES EQUIPPED WITH THE MORSE REMOTE THROTTLE CONTROL. THE MORSE REMOTE THROTTLE CONTROL PANEL IS LOCATED IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND A SWITCH ON IT IS LABELED, "THROTTLE"; "OFF" OR "FRONT" AND "ON" OR "REAR" SELECTING THE ACTIVE ENGINE CONTROL STATION. IF A PERSON OPERATING THE ENGINE FROM THE "REAR" POSITION (AT THE ENGINE) FAILS TO PLACE THE SWITCH IN THE "OFF" OR "FRONT" POSITION AND THE ENGINE RPM WAS SET TO ABOVE IDLE DURING MAINTENANCE FOR EXAMPLE, WHEN THE BUS IS STARTED FROM THE DRIVER'S STATION THE ENGINE COULD CHANGE TO THE HIGHER RPM RESULTING IN UNWANTED ENGINE POWER.

Risk: THE BUS COULD ACCELERATE AT A HIGHER RATE THAN ANTICIPATED INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
