2009 NISSAN VERSA Complaints and Recall Information

The 2009 NISSAN VERSA has 1 complaint and 29 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to recalls not being properly closed by dealerships after repairs have been performed.

There are 29 recalls affecting the 2009 Nissan Versa that involve several critical systems including the air bag inflator modules, suspension coil springs, and the GPS navigation system batteries. These recalls address safety hazards such as air bag inflator rupture and coil spring corrosion which may increase risk of injury or accidents.

Common Issues
  • Recall closure refusal. A complaint states a Nissan dealership would not close a recall campaign on the vehicle despite completed repairs.

Numerous recalls involve defective air bag inflators prone to rupture due to propellant degradation. The front coil springs are subject to corrosion and fracture in certain regions with high road salt usage. A recall also addresses the risk of fire from GPS units overheating.

Recalls
  • GPS navigation system. (NHTSA recall 10V401000, 7,948 vehicles) The GPS units contain batteries that can overheat causing fire risk. Repairs include battery replacement and installation of a spacer by Garmin technicians at no cost.
  • Front coil springs. (NHTSA recall 15V573000, 218,019 vehicles) Corrosion from road salt may cause coil springs to fracture and puncture tires, increasing crash risk. Dealers will replace both front coil springs free of charge.
  • Air bag inflator modules. (NHTSA recall 22E066000, 375 vehicles) Replacement passenger and driver side inflators used in collision or theft repairs may explode due to propellant degradation, risking metal fragment injury. Dealers will inspect and replace inflators as needed free of charge.
  • Passenger air bag inflator rupture. (NHTSA recall 16V349000, 413,852 vehicles) Air bag inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation after exposure to humidity and temperature cycling, causing serious injury or death. Nissan will replace affected inflators free of charge.
  • Passenger air bag inflator explosion. (NHTSA recall 18V044000, 52,614 vehicles) Certain 2009-2012 models have air bag inflators that may explode during deployment due to propellant degradation. Nissan will notify owners and replace inflators free of charge.
  • Front passenger air bag inflators. (NHTSA recall 20V008000, 307,962 vehicles) Non-desiccated inflators with PSAN propellant may explode after long-term exposure to high humidity and temperatures, risking injury. Nissan will replace inflators free of charge.
  • Front passenger inflator replacement. (NHTSA recall 17V028000, 152,554 vehicles) Inflators installed as original or replacement parts may rupture due to humidity and temperature effects, risking occupant injury. Dealers will replace these inflators free of charge.
  • Driver side air bag inflator rupture. (NHTSA recall 17V449000, 515,394 vehicles) Inflators may rupture from propellant degradation caused by environmental conditions, risking serious injury or death. Nissan will replace the inflators free of charge.

Owners facing repeated repairs or unresolved recall issues especially relating to safety defects should consider their rights under state lemon laws. Consulting a consumer protection attorney may provide guidance for vehicles with recurring serious safety problems or manufacturer noncompliance with recall obligations.
