2020 NISSAN ROGUE SPORT Complaints and Recall Information
The 2020 NISSAN ROGUE SPORT has 14 complaints and 1 recall filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues with the cooling fan failing to operate, causing the engine to overheat. Other common problems include unexpected engine shutdowns and malfunctioning door components.
Common Issues- Cooling fan failure. Multiple owners report the cooling fan does not come on, leading to engine overheating.
- Engine overheating. The failure of the cooling fan results in the engine overheating and sometimes causes damage to the cooling system components.
- Engine shut off while driving. The engine has shut off unexpectedly at stops or slow speeds, including while pressing the gas pedal or brakes.
- Transmission slipping. Reports indicate slipping transmission affecting acceleration without triggering warning lights or error codes.
- Remote start inoperative. Several owners indicate the equipped remote start feature never works.
- Door handle defect. The driver side door handle spring comes loose, causing the door to not register as closed and triggering a constant alert on the dash.
- Screen malfunction. The vehicle’s display screen shuts off intermittently and requires cycling the ignition to restore function.
- Coolant reservoir failure. One complaint describes a coolant reservoir explosion triggered by the cooling fan motor failure, presenting a safety hazard.
- Cooling system repairs. Replacement of the cooling fan, radiator, hoses, and coolant was necessary at low mileage due to overheating.
- Dealer acknowledgment. Dealers have reportedly acknowledged that cooling fan and radiator fan issues are common in this model.
There is one recall affecting this vehicle that relates to the ignition key system. The recall addresses a safety risk caused by a key defect that could lead to unintended engine shutdown while driving.
Recalls- Ignition key defect. NHTSA recall 23V093000 affects 712,458 vehicles including 2020 Rogue Sport models. The jackknife style ignition key may collapse while driving, causing the engine to shut off unexpectedly. This increases crash risk and may prevent airbag deployment. The fix involves dealers inserting a spacer into the key slot at no cost. Interim owner notifications were mailed in March 2023 with official mailings expected in August 2023.
Owners dealing with repeated engine shutdowns, overheating due to cooling system failures, or unresolved recall repairs may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Consulting a qualified attorney can help assess any potential claims related to safety defects or persistent mechanical issues.

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2014-2020 Rogue and 2017-2022 Rogue Sport vehicles equipped with a jackknife style ignition key. The jackknife key may collapse into a folded position while driving.
Risk: Driver contact with a key in the collapsed position could inadvertently shut off the vehicle while driving, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, if the vehicle shuts off while driving, the air bags may not deploy in a crash as intended, increasing the risk of injury.

I had to replace my cooling system (fan, radiator, hoses, coolant) on this car after driving it only 30K miles. This led to over heating the car engine and stopped working because of that.. I was told by Nissan dealer it stopped working and they are seeing many of those issues related to the same car that I have. It costs me $1500 to replace it.

Radiator fan issue. Dealership told me it is a common problem with this car. Cost is crazy expensive to fix . And if I fix it with Nissan part will this happen again because they are making bad parts.

The electric fan motor on the radiator failed. This caused the vehicle to overheat. The cap on the coolant reservoir did not actuate and the coolant reservoir exploded. The mechanical failure of the fan lead to a catastrophic failure of the coolant reservoir. If someone, a service tech or customer was under the hood when this happened they would most likely have died due to the extreme force and heated liquid coming out of the exploded reservior tank.

My acceleration hasn’t been working properly. I had my car inspected by a third-party and they said my transmission is slipping. The mechanic said this is a defect he is seeing in my type of car. He said bring it to Nissan so I did. Because there is no light or code popping up yet in my car, they refuse to do anything. They told me to keep driving my car unless a warning light comes on, despite me informing that I almost crashed several times due to the lack of acceleration.
