2014 NISSAN MURANO Complaints and Recall Information
The 2014 NISSAN MURANO has 7 complaints and 1 recall filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues with the airbag warning light remaining on and problems related to the occupant detection system. There are also reports of engine overheating, motive power loss, and transmission malfunction at highway speeds.
Common Issues
- Airbag warning light. The airbag light remains on due to a defective seat cushion pressure sensor causing occupant detection system errors. Dealers require replacing the entire passenger seat for repairs costing over $3,700, while the sensor itself costs under $40.
- Airbag system safety concerns. Owners report risk of unexpected airbag deployment, failure to deploy during an accident, or deployment when a child is seated. Repair costs exceed $4,000 and insurance does not cover them.
- Engine overheating. Reports exist of the engine overheating leading to diagnosis of leaking radiator, exhaust assembly issues, and head gasket failure at high mileage.
- Motive power loss. The vehicle lost power while driving around 30 MPH, triggered the check engine light, and required towing. No successful repairs were reported.
- Engine failure. One complaint explicitly states engine failure without additional resolution details.
- Transmission issues. CVT transmission malfunctions include erratic RPM surges and jolting at speeds above 60 MPH. These problems appear before 133,000 miles and mimic issues covered by recalls on newer models.
One recall affects the 2014 Nissan Murano involving the power steering hydraulic system. The defect poses a fire risk if power steering fluid leaks onto hot engine parts.
Recalls
- Power steering hose. NHTSA recall 17V184000 affects 56,766 vehicles including 2014 Murano models. The hose clamp may fail to secure the power steering hose, allowing detachment and fluid leaks. If leaked fluid contacts heat sources, there is an increased fire risk. Nissan dealers will install a high-pressure hose kit free of charge. The recall notification began May 10, 2017.
Owners facing repeated airbag system failures, engine or transmission problems, or unresolved recall repairs may have rights under state lemon laws. Consulting a qualified attorney to evaluate repair records and safety defects is recommended.

Nissan North America (Nissan) is recalling certain 2013-2014 Murano and Murano Cross Cabriolet vehicles. The power steering hose clamp may not adequately secure the hose, allowing the hose to detach and leak power steering fluid.
Risk: If the power steering fluid leaks onto a heat source such as hot engine or exhaust components, there could be an increased risk of a fire.

I have done a lot of research on these Nissan Muranos and other Nissan models. There are recalls for this exact same issue on models 2015-2019 and I have a 2014. I have viewed many complaints and reviews that state owners also have problem with the CVT transmission. Mine is giving error messages and been acting up while on the interstate. It will jolt into 4 rpm and higher and stay there. This always happens on the interstate and has happened a few times on slower speed limit roads. Seems like the issue is mainly when the car is over 60mph on the interstate. It seems very dangerous and I know Nissan CVT transmission have been recalled. I only have 132,000 miles on my vehicle and many mechanics have told me that it should not be going out like this with this few miles.

The airbag warning indicator lit up on my Nisan Murano dash board. This is safety concern for me and my family. When I took my vehicle to Nissan dealer to have it checked, they said there was a recall on it which expired. I bought this vehicle in 2021. I did not get any recall notice. The cost to address the issue per dealers estimate is more than $4,000.00. Why is Nisan refusing to address this?

The safety issue is with a 2014 Nissan Murano. April 22, 2024, the air bag light is on steady, so the vehicle was taken to a Nissan dealer to determine the repairs that are necessary. The Nissan dealer determined the battery charge was low and recharged the battery. The air bag light went off afterwards for 6 months. Then on 1-27-25, the Nissan Murano was again brought to the Nissan Dealer to determine why the air bag light was on. The technician diagnostic scan for codes found code B00A0 stored, in airbag for occupant detection system error. In plain terms, the seat cushion pressure sensor is defective. The dealer will only do the repair if they replace the entire passenger seat at a cost that is more than $3,700. From my research, At Nissan Parts, that pressure sensor costs $39.02. Part Occupant Sensor - Nissan (98853-3JA0A). The auto insurance will not cover this repair. This is a serious safety issue, where there is a possibility that the air bag could deploy unexpectedly causing serious injury to the passenger, deploy when a child is in the passenger seat, or not deploy at all in an accident. Searching for repair options on the web, I have found many forums and instances that describe the same problem. This should be a manufacturer recall.
