2010 NISSAN ALTIMA Complaints and Recall Information
The 2010 NISSAN ALTIMA has 5 complaints and 2 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues related to the engine control unit (ECU) malfunctioning, causing problems with the catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, and oxygen sensors. Another complaint involves the dashboard melting and emitting a sticky, tar-like substance that obstructs visibility.
Common Issues
- ECU malfunction. The engine control unit causes failure in the catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, and O2 sensors, consistent with recall NTB 12-040d.
- Dashboard deterioration. The front half of the dashboard melts and oozes a black, sticky, tar-like substance that produces a strong odor and creates glare on the windshield.
- Repeated OEM component failures. Multiple complaints indicate overlapping symptoms involving the emission control and sensor systems linked to ECU problems.
There are two recalls affecting this vehicle involving electrical and structural components. They address risks in the navigation system battery and manufacturing defects in the side member assembly.
Recalls
- Navigation system battery. (NHTSA Recall 10V401000) Approximately 7,948 vehicles were equipped with Garmin Nuvi 750 GPS units whose batteries may overheat, posing a fire risk. Repairs include battery replacement and adding a spacer at no cost to owners. Safety recall began September 16, 2010.
- Front side member welds. (NHTSA Recall 10V193000) About 113 vehicles built between April 7 and April 13, 2010, may have front side member components welded below specification due to tool maintenance errors. This could affect crash performance. Dealers will inspect and repair for free. Safety recall began May 13, 2010.
Owners dealing with repeated repairs related to ECU failure, safety defects, or unresolved recall issues may have rights under their state’s lemon law and should consider consulting an attorney for possible remedies.

Dashboard has started melting. Front half of dash has started oozing a black, sticky, shiny tar-like substance in addition to an odor. Sticks to everything and does not come off or stop oozing. Spreading to more area of the dashboard. Does create a glare on the windshield, obstructing visibility. Have always used a sun shield since purchasing the car in 2022. This just started ~7/31/2025.
