2014 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER SPORT Complaints and Recall Information

The 2014 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER SPORT has 2 complaints and 10 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues with the windshield wipers failing to operate properly on the passenger side and problems with the acceleration system accompanied by the ASC system warning light. Some drivers report the vehicle losing power while driving and requiring multiple repairs to the exhaust components.

Common Issues

  • Windshield wiper malfunction. The driver’s side wiper works intermittently while the passenger side often fails to move or gets stuck, causing bent wiper arms.
  • Acceleration loss and ASC warning. The vehicle suffers from sudden drops in acceleration with the ASC system warning light active, forcing reduced speed on highways.
  • Catalytic converter clogging. The exhaust and catalytic converter become clogged repeatedly, requiring replacement multiple times within a few months.
  • Expensive exhaust repairs. Dealers recommend replacing the entire exhaust manifold, muffler, and catalytic converter after repeated clogging without explanation.

There are 10 recalls involving various components including seat belts, suspension, windshield wipers, and parking brakes. These recalls address safety-related defects that may increase the risk of accidents or injuries. Some recalls involve corrosion issues affecting structural parts and suspension control arms, while others focus on visibility and braking system problems.

Recalls

  • Seat belts. (14V744000) Affecting 54,779 vehicles. The front passenger seat belt lap end attachment fastener may loosen over time, reducing crash protection. Dealers will inspect and replace the fastener at no cost.
  • Frame corrosion and control arms. (21V144000) Affecting 15,347 vehicles. Salt water exposure may cause front lower control arms to detach, risking loss of vehicle control. Inspection and anti-corrosion treatment or replacement will be performed free of charge.
  • Front lower control arms. (21V144000) Same as above; this recall covers detachment risk due to corrosion compromising suspension components.
  • Wiper motor corrosion. (16V792000) Affecting 93,801 vehicles. Water intrusion can corrode the windshield wiper motor causing failure and loss of visibility. The wiper motor will be replaced free of charge. Parts availability pending.
  • Frame corrosion and control arms. (20V279000) Affecting 141,200 vehicles. Suspension control arms may detach due to corroded front cross members from salt exposure. Dealers will inspect and apply corrosion treatment or replace parts at no cost.
  • Front lower control arms. (20V279000) Same recall as above emphasizing suspension detachment risk and repair procedures.
  • Wiper link corrosion. (18V103000) Affecting 158,651 vehicles. Water ingress leads to corroded front wiper link ball joints causing wipers to become inoperative. Dealers will replace the wiper rod and motor crank arm free of charge.
  • Parking brake corrosion. (18V070000) Affecting 170,354 vehicles. Water can corrode rear brake caliper parking brake actuator shafts causing binding, possibly preventing proper brake engagement. Repairs include replacement of brake components at no cost.

Owners facing repeated repairs related to the ASC system failure, exhaust clogging, or unresolved recall repairs may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Consulting with a consumer protection attorney could provide guidance on available options for persistent safety or performance defects.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

In February of 2025 I was driving on the highway and my car stopped accelerating and the “ASC system required” light turned on. The RPM stayed at 4,000-5,000 and my car dropped from 60MPH to 20MPH. I had to drive on the side of the highway 20 minutes home like this. I took the car into a shop and they said the exhaust and catalytic converter was clogged and replaced it. It ran okay after that for about 3 weeks and then the same thing started to happen again. I have had to pull onto the side of the highway about 10-15 times as of writing this to restart my car/drive home going 20-30MPH. I brought it to the Mitsubishi dealership last week and they said I will need a whole new exhaust manifold, muffler, and catalytic converter due to it “being clogged” and quoted me just over 6,000 for it to be fixed even though I just replaced all of this in February. They did not give me an explanation as to why this is happening or explaining what is causing the “ASC system service required” light to go off.
