2016 MINI CLUBMAN Complaints and Recall Information

The 2016 MINI CLUBMAN has 3 complaints and 2 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues with the vehicle’s braking system, seat belt functionality, and transmission safety. Some complaints involve unexpected braking and brake caliper locking without warning lights.

Common Issues

  • Transmission safety. The vehicle may fail to report when it is in park, requiring shifter repair to address a potential safety hazard.
  • Seat belt failure. The driver’s seat belt assembly can fail to latch securely, making it inoperable and requiring replacement.
  • Sudden braking and pulling. The vehicle may brake suddenly and pull sharply to one side at speeds above 40 mph, causing loss of control on the highway.
  • Front suspension damage. A damaged front ball joint was identified and replaced but did not resolve the sudden braking and pulling.
  • Brake caliper locking. Front right and rear left brake calipers may lock up without triggering brake, traction control, or ABS warning lights, posing a safety risk.

There are two recalls related to components that affect the trailer hitch and side curtain airbags. Both recalls involve safety issues and require dealer repairs provided at no cost to the vehicle owner.

Recalls

  • Trailer hitch. NHTSA Recall 17E051000 affects 166 vehicles due to inadequate structure points on certain Class 1 trailer hitches that may sag or separate under load, increasing crash risk. Dealers will replace the hitch free of charge. No "Do Not Drive" or "Park Outside" advisory was issued.
  • Side curtain airbags. NHTSA Recall 16V553000 affects 7,810 vehicles because side curtain airbags may not deploy properly, failing federal ejection mitigation standards. Dealers will modify airbag covers at no charge. No "Do Not Drive" or "Park Outside" advisory was issued.

Owners dealing with repeated braking and safety system defects or unresolved recall issues may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Consulting a consumer protection attorney can help determine possible remedies.

TRAILER HITCHES

Curt Manufacturing LLC (Curt) is recalling certain Class 1 trailer hitches, part number 11451, sold for installation on 2016-2018 Mini Cooper Clubman and Countryman vehicles. The vehicles may have inadequate structure points for the trailer hitch mounting, causing the hitch to sag under to certain loads and possibly separate from the vehicle.

Risk: If the trailer hitch sags or separates from the vehicle, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 MINI Clubman vehicles manufactured August 19, 2015, through July 14, 2016. The side curtain air bags for the front seat occupants may deploy in the intended positions in the event of a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 226, "Ejection Mitigation."

Risk: If a side curtain air bag does not inflate as intended in the event of a crash, there is an increased risk of injury to the front seat occupants.

SERVICE BRAKES

On January 7, 2025, the vehicle started to suddenly brake and pull to the right side of the road when going above 40 mph for less than 2 seconds, and then I regained control. When on the left lane of the highway, the sudden movement was so pronounced that it made the car invade the right lane. This happened over 10 times on a single trip. Since this happened, the vehicle was stopped, and the front suspension was inspected. There was a front ball joint damaged. It was replaced, thinking this was the problem. The vehicle was used for the following months. However, when driving it on the highway, it kept doing the same thing. On April 15, 2025 the vehicle was being driven at about 25 mph when the rear left brake suddenly locked up without any brake, traction control, or ABS warning lights. The vehicle was towed home. When trying to move the vehicle, it was noticed that the front right and rear left brake calipers were locked up. Still no warning lights.
