2023 MERCEDES-BENZ SPRINTER 2500 Complaints and Recall Information

The 2023 MERCEDES-BENZ SPRINTER 2500 has 4 complaints and 7 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report the engine idle speed dropping to around 400 rpm, causing a lack of response to throttle input. These incidents happen both in stationary situations and while driving, creating potentially hazardous conditions.

Common Issues
  • Low engine idle speed. The engine occasionally idles at approximately 400 rpm, resulting in no response to accelerator input and difficulty moving the vehicle.
  • Throttle unresponsiveness. The vehicle fails to respond to pressing the gas pedal, causing situations where the vehicle may stall or remain stationary unexpectedly.
  • Safety risk at intersections. Loss of throttle response while waiting to make turns or in traffic can create dangerous driving conditions and driver distress.

The vehicle has 7 recalls affecting various systems including suspension, electrical wiring, body structure, and critical fasteners. These recalls address potential defects that could impair vehicle control, increase fire risk, and compromise structural integrity.

Recalls
  • Rear suspension. (NHTSA 24V517000) The rear axle spring U-bolts may have reduced strength due to improper heat-treatment affecting 1,232 vehicles. An axle moving out of position can cause loss of vehicle control and crash risk. Dealers will replace the U-bolts free of charge.
  • Main wiring harness. (NHTSA 24V166000) On 828 vehicles, wiring may chafe against the drive shaft causing short circuits, loss of drive power, power steering, and brake control, and increasing fire risk. Dealers will inspect and correct wiring routing free of charge.
  • 12-Volt ground connection. (NHTSA 24V225000) Affecting 99 vehicles, an unsecured ground connection can overheat causing fire risk and loss of drive power. Dealers will inspect and repair the connection free of charge.
  • Paint adhesion defects. (NHTSA 23V806000) On 131 vehicles, insufficient bonding of windows and interior lashing rails due to paint formula issues may lead to detachment during crashes, increasing injury risk. Dealers will inspect and repair paint adhesion free of charge. Recall may include repurchase offers.
  • Front suspension bolt. (NHTSA 23V849000) In 33 vehicles, the front left suspension strut bolt may be loose, risking loss of steering control and crashes. Dealers will inspect and repair as needed free of charge.
  • Partition wall fasteners. (NHTSA 23V876000) Affecting 387 vehicles, missing bolts on the partition wall may allow detachment in crashes, increasing injury risk. Dealers will inspect and secure the wall free of charge.

Owners dealing with repeated repairs due to throttle response and idle speed issues or those affected by recall defects that impact vehicle safety may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Consulting with a consumer protection attorney could help clarify available options.

SUSPENSION:REAR:SPRINGS:LEAF SPRING ASSEMBLY:U-BOLT, LEAF SPRING TO AXLE

Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles. The spring U-bolts for the rear axle may have reduced strength due to improper heat-treatment, which can cause the rear axle to shift out of position.

Risk: An axle that moves out of position can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

828 vehicles affected

24V166000

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING

Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2023 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles. The main wiring harness may chafe against the drive shaft and short circuit, which can result in a loss of drive power, power steering, and brake system control.

Risk: A short circuit increases the risk of a fire. In addition, a loss of drive power, power steering, and brake system control increases the risk of a crash.

Occasionally, the idle speed of the engine will drop to 400 rpm. When this happens, the vehicle does not respond to throttle input. If it happens in a parking lot, you can shift into park and coax the rpm higher, then shift to drive and move on. When it happens in the middle of an intersection while waiting to make a left turn, the story is very different. You can end up in a very dangerous situation. This has happened to me multiple times. I have not had an accident, but I have upset other drivers when I failed to clear an intersection in a timely manner. Knowing that the car will move when you press on the accelerator is critical for safely operating a vehicle. I purchased the vehicle new in October 2024, but did not start driving it until February 2025. The first incident happened about a week after hitting the road. It has happened many times since then. It took me an embarrassingly long time (months) to realize the problem was a low idle. The symptom I observed was that the vehicle failed to respond to the accelerator. That is the symptom that people will notice and that is the symptom that should be matched. It can be scary when it happens. Now that I know that it is brought on by low idle, I can watch for it and be prepared, but it can still leave me in a bad situation.
