2005 MAZDA RX-8 Complaints and Recall Information

The 2005 MAZDA RX-8 has 0 complaints and 5 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners commonly report concerns related to airbag inflator issues and fuel system defects as reflected in the recall data. No direct complaints have been formally submitted.

There are five recalls addressing critical safety and fuel system components. These recalls cover both the fuel pump system and the frontal airbag inflators affecting driver and passenger sides.

Recalls
  • Fuel pump pipe cracking. NHTSA recall 17V354000 affects 69,447 vehicles. Engine and exhaust heat may cause the fuel pump pipe to crack, risking fuel leakage and fire. Mazda dealers will replace the fuel pump filter kit at no cost. The recall started on July 31, 2017.
  • Passenger air bag inflator rupture. Recall 18V402000 covers 308,591 vehicles including 2004-2011 RX-8 models that were previously recalled but unrepaired. The inflator may explode due to propellant degradation with humidity and temperature changes, causing serious injury or death. Owners are advised not to drive affected vehicles until repair. The replacement began July 6, 2018 and expanded to RX-8 owners in 2019.
  • Additional passenger air bag inflator defect. Recall 18V404000 impacts 4,184 RX-8 vehicles. Similar to recall 18V402000, the passenger inflator can rupture due to environmental exposure resulting in injury risk. The remedy is a free inflator replacement that started in July 2019 for RX-8 owners.
  • Fuel pump sealing ring deterioration. Recall 16V793000 applies to 69,447 vehicles. Heat exposure may deteriorate sealing rings causing fuel leaks and fire risk. Repairs include replacing sealing rings and adding insulation to the fuel tank at dealer expense. The recall became active on July 31, 2017.
  • Driver air bag inflator rupture. Recall 17V474000 affects 308,992 vehicles including 2004-2008 RX-8s. Moisture intrusion and manufacturing variability may cause inflators to rupture during deployment, sending metal fragments into the vehicle cabin. Owners must not drive affected vehicles until the airbag inflator is replaced. The recall began September 12, 2017.

Owners with repeated repairs or unresolved issues related to these recalls may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Legal consultation is recommended to evaluate possible remedies for persistent safety or performance defects.

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE

Mazda North America Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2005-2006 Mazda MPV vehicles sold, or ever registered, in the states of Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. On July 9, 2019 this recall was expanded to include certain 2005-2009 RX-8 vehicles that were previously recalled under 17V-011 but have not yet been repaired. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.

Risk: An inflator explosion may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
