2014 MAZDA MAZDA6 Complaints and Recall Information

The 2014 MAZDA MAZDA6 has 4 complaints and 4 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report problems related to the park position sensor and difficulties shifting into park. Other complaints involve the EVAP system causing fault codes and unintended acceleration incidents.

Common Issues
  • Park position sensor failure. The sensor often does not recognize when the vehicle is in park, preventing the engine from shutting off and causing the doors to remain unlocked until resolved.
  • Difficulty shifting to park. Multiple attempts are required to get the transmission to shift into park, sometimes taking several minutes before the car can be turned off and locked.
  • EVAP system fault code. The P0451 code appears when filling the gas tank near full and intermittently clears when avoiding overfilling; this condition resembles an issue covered by recall 7414D but is not covered in all cases.
  • Unexpected acceleration. The engine revs suddenly and accelerates without pressing the accelerator even when the brake is fully applied; dealer inspections have found no faults despite repeated incidents.

The vehicle has 4 recalls addressing fuel system overfilling, tire pressure monitoring, electrical charging system, and parking brake components. These recalls affect various systems linked to fuel safety, tire pressure alerts, vehicle stalling risk, and parking brake engagement.

Recalls
  • Fuel tank overfill risk. (NHTSA 14V170000) Affected 19,000 vehicles. The defect allows fuel tank overfilling which can cause gasoline to leak from the charcoal canister vent, increasing fire risk. Repair involves installing an adapter on the shut off valve and inspecting or replacing the canister as necessary.
  • Tire pressure monitoring system failure. (NHTSA 14V675000) Affects 99,711 vehicles. The TPMS may not warn if all tires lose pressure simultaneously, increasing risk of sudden tire failure and crashes. Mazda will update the TPMS software free of charge.
  • Charging system malfunction. (NHTSA 14V173000) Affects 5,700 vehicles with 2.5L engines and regenerative braking. Alternator belt slippage during heavy rain triggers PCM to disable charging, risking engine stall and loss of critical functions. Dealers will reprogram PCM software at no cost.
  • Parking brake actuator corrosion. (NHTSA 17V393000) Affects 227,814 vehicles. Water intrusion can corrode parking brake actuator shafts causing binding and incomplete brake engagement. This may let the vehicle roll unexpectedly when parked. Mazda will inspect and replace corroded shafts free, but parts availability is delayed.

Owners dealing with repeated repairs, unresolved recalls, or safety-related defects may want to consider their rights under applicable state lemon laws. Consulting with a qualified attorney can help evaluate potential claims related to these ongoing issues.

PARKING BRAKE

Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2014-2015 Mazda6 and 2014-2016 Mazda3 vehicles. Water could possibly enter the brake caliper causing the parking brake actuator shaft to corrode and possibly bind.

Risk: If the parking brake actuator shaft binds, the parking brake may not engage or disengage fully. If the parking brake does not engage properly, the vehicle may move unexpectedly if it is parked on a slope, increasing the risk of a crash.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:ALTERNATOR/GENERATOR/REGULATOR

Mazda North America Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2014 Mazda3 vehicles manufactured June 12, 2013, through December 18, 2013, and model year 2014-2015 Mazda6 vehicles manufactured May 20, 2013, through December 4, 2013, and both equipped with a 2.5L engine and a regenerative engine braking system. When driving the affected vehicles in heavy rain or in deep puddles, the alternator belt may slip causing the Power Control module (PCM) to incorrectly assume failure of the charging system.

Risk: Once the PCM assumes that the charging system has failed, the vehicle will stop charging and could result in poor acceleration, loss of steering assist and windshield wiper operation, and a possible engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS

Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Mazda6 vehicles manufactured October 25, 2012, to October 10, 2014. If the pressures of four of the tires on an affected vehicle gradually drop at the same time, the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) may not warn the driver of the drop in pressure. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 138, "Tire Pressure Monitoring System."

Risk: A vehicle that is driven with under inflated tires may experience a sudden tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY

Mazda North America Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2014 Mazda6 vehicles manufactured October 25, 2012, through May 9, 2013. In the affected vehicles, it is possible to fill the fuel tank beyond its rated capacity.

Risk: If the tank is overfilled, gas may flow into the charcoal canister (an evaporative emissions component) and possibly leak from the canister's external vent, increasing the risk of a fire.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

I pulled into my parking space in front of garage door, I came to a complete stop and positively without any doubt, put my foot on the brake. As I shifted to park, all of a sudden engine loudly revved up and car suddenly and quickly accelerated through garage door. I want to make it perfectly clear, I DID NOT HAVE MY FOOT ACCIDENTLY ON THE ACCELERATOR WHEN CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. Mazda checked the car and said nothing was wrong with the car. This has happened to many other people with Mazda and other makes and people are told too many times that there is nothing wrong the car when it clearly is not human error.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

My 2014 mazda 6 EVAP system pops the p0451 when filling up gas to the first click. It goes away after a while if I take care to not fill up the tank all the way to the top. It is similar to a issue reported by recall 7414D for other 2014 mazda 6s. My car is not covered by the open recall, but it is experiencing similar issues. The p0451 goes on and off depending on how much i fill up the gastank.

The car will not go into Park right away. As previously reported, I have to start the car multiple times to get it into Park--can take up to 10 plus minutes before the car will go into Parkand shut off--only then I can lock the car! Very frustrating since it's a known issue and still has not been recalled

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The park position sensor doesn't work. The car doesn't recognize that the car is in park and will not turn off. This is a known issue with the mazda 6 2014 and I do not know why there hasn't been a recall. I shouldn't have to pay to have this fixed. Started in 2019. Sometimes it takes 20 or more times to get the car to turn off by shifting in gear and back into park or starting and turning off the car. If you can't get the car turned off you cannot lock the doors and it will run the battery down. I just want this to be recalled so the dealership will repair. Thank you, this is a very frustrating situation. Literally my arm gets tired from slamming the gear shifter into park trying to get the car turned off.
