2024 MAZDA CX-90 PLUG-IN HYBRID Complaints and Recall Information

The 2024 MAZDA CX-90 PLUG-IN HYBRID has 20 complaints and 0 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report sudden loss of drive power while driving and various hybrid system malfunctions. Several complaints describe incidents in which the vehicle suddenly fails to accelerate despite the engine revving. Other frequent reports include persistent engine malfunction warnings and issues with the seatbelt reminder system.

Common Issues

  • Sudden loss of power. Vehicle unexpectedly loses ability to accelerate while driving. Engine revs as if in neutral but the vehicle does not move forward. The vehicle remains in drive as shown by the shifter light. Regaining drive requires a full stop and shift to park then drive again. Incidents often occur with no warning lights or messages.
  • Engine malfunction warnings. Engine warning lights and messages appear during operation and at startup. Some vehicles show persistent engine malfunction messages and perform erratically, including swerving and shaking violently, resulting in serious accidents.
  • Hybrid system malfunction. Owners report hybrid battery and electrical leakage alerts. The vehicle becomes completely inoperable and requires towing multiple times. Dealers have not resolved these issues despite repeated repairs.
  • Seatbelt reminder malfunction. The seatbelt warning sounds continuously even when seats are empty or occupant unbuckles early. The alarm only stops by turning off the vehicle and opening a door. The behavior causes distraction and safety concerns in traffic.
  • Blind spot monitor false alerts. The system frequently triggers alerts unnecessarily during conditions like light fog or water vapor, reducing driver trust in safety features.
  • Cruise control delay. Vehicle does not slow down until the brake pedal is pressed significantly. Brake lights activate but acceleration continues briefly, complicating driver response.
  • Steering wheel sticking. Steering wheel sticks intermittently when turning, mainly to the left at moderate speeds. The issue persists despite tire replacement and previous recalls related to the steering column.

Owners dealing with repeated powertrain failures, hybrid system malfunctions, and persistent warning lights may consider consulting a lemon law attorney. Safety defects and unresolved issues of this nature could provide grounds for legal remedies under their state’s consumer protection laws.

STEERING

Mazda issued a recall on the steering column which was done a year ago. The steering wheel continues to stick when turning on an intermittent basis requiring extra force to bring the wheel back to center. It’s been happening for a while and the service dept told me it was the tires. I replaced the tires and it continues to happen. Mainly happens when driving around turns towards the left and driving around 30-50mph. It occasionally happens when changing lanes on the highway.

Received Hybrid Battery Malfunction and Electrical Leakage Detection alerts two weeks ago. Dealer has not been able to fix. First they said it was the water heater, then they said my radiator was leaking and I need a new one. Estimated 4 additional weeks for repair.

The seatbelt reminder system is broken and someone almost took my door off this morning because I had to open my door to get it to stop. Every day when I drop my kids off at school I have to make sure the vehicle is in park so the seatbelt reminder doesn't go off. If they open it a second before I put the vehicle in park it will keep beeping and beeping until I turn the car off, open my door, and turn the car on. I had to do that today and at a stop sign. It's busy by the school so everyone is in a hurry. So it was beeping non stop because my son unbuckled early and the car will keep beeping even if noone is in the seat. I stopped at the stop sign, turned off the car (and it still kept beeping), opened my door to get it to stop, It was at this point the person behind me thought my car was disabled and went around me, almost taking out my door and possibly my arm at the moment. I also have to do this when someone in the back seat moves seats (and we have to put a seatbelt on an empty seat) or even puts some pressure on a seat. If they sit inbetween seats we then have to put a seatbelt on an empty seat. Dealer says this is the way its designed.

I am submitted this report for the 12/6/2024 event. The form I submitted previously was for the safety incident that occured last night (1/9/2025). On four different occasions, the most recent being last night (1/9/2025), the vehicle has suddenly lost drive power while driving. The ability to accelerate is suddenly gone. When you press the gas pedal the engine revs, as if it is in neutral, but it does not accelerate. When this happens, the vehicle is still in drive as indicated by light on the shifter showing drive and the fact the vehicle, just moments before, is driving. During all four instances, I had to bring the vehicle to a complete, put the car in park and then back into drive. On three of these occasions there was no pull-out lane and I had to bring the vehicle to a complete stop in a moving lane of traffic. The incident last night occurred mere seconds after making a left-hand turn with traffic coming up behind me at a higher speed then I was travelling. My safety, the safety all passengers in my car and the safety of other drivers are all at risk when this occurs. When this happens there are no warning lamps or messages that appear. After the third time it happened (on 12/6/2024), we took the vehicle to the Mazda dealership we leased it from and it was inspected and we were told they found nothing wrong with it. They noted they did some updates. They kept the vehicle from Monday 12/9 - Thursday 12/12. Less than a month after getting the vehicle back from the dealership this issue occurred a 4th time (on 1/9/2025 at about 8pm). We will be calling the dealership this morning and setting up an appointment for them to again inspect the vehicle for this safety concern. The vehicle is available for inspection.
