The 2022 LAND ROVER DEFENDER has 1 complaint and 9 recalls filed with NHTSA. The complaint involves front lights burning out, specifically the running daylight lights, requiring full headlight replacement at high cost. Owners report this as a common issue affecting visibility and turn signal function in vehicles just over three years old.
Common Issues
- Front headlight failure. Both running day lights burn out, forcing owners to replace the entire headlight assembly, which costs over $3,000.
- Safety visibility problem. Burned out running lights hinder proper vehicle visibility and use of turn signals, creating a potential safety hazard.
There are 9 recalls covering various systems including exterior lighting, engine lubrication, and accessory equipment. These recalls address defects ranging from electrical failures in rear lights to potential fire risks due to oil leaks, and issues with aftermarket accessories detaching from the vehicle.
Recalls
- Raised Air Intake (N964). Affects 485 vehicles; the RAI accessory may detach if not secured properly, posing a road hazard that increases crash risk. Dealers will inspect and reinstall the accessory as needed at no charge.
- Engine oil channel blockage (N763). Impacts 6,724 vehicles; blocked cam carrier oil channels can cause oil leaks, raising fire risk near ignition sources. Repairs include inspection and component replacement free of charge.
- Rear light assemblies failure (N598). Applies to 2,622 Defender X vehicles with smoked light assemblies; voltage spikes triggered by bright lights can cause turn signals, brake lights, and tail lights to fail, reducing driver visibility. Dealers will replace rear light assemblies at no cost.
Owners dealing with repeated repairs or unresolved recalls involving safety-related defects may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Assistance may be available for addressing these ongoing issues.

I own a 2022 Land Rover Defender and the front lights have both burned out. The issue is the running day lights burn out and the ONLY fix is to replace the entire headlight. The cost of replacing the headlight is over $3,000 and has happen to both headlight in my 3+ year old car. This is a safety issue because the running day light need to be used in order to property see the vehicle and use the turn signals. I have spoken to the dealership and looked online in Land Rover forums and this is a very common problem. I'm requesting a recall on the headlights for the Defender and also recommend that their should be a fix that does not cost over $3,000 when a simple LED has burned out. Thanks for your Athenian to this issue.
