2019 KIA SEDONA Complaints and Recall Information
The 2019 KIA SEDONA has 4 complaints and 6 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report engine oil consumption problems and sliding door malfunctions. The engine issues include excessive oil burning and sudden engine failure due to low oil without warning. Door problems mainly involve sliding doors failing to latch or close properly, sometimes opening unexpectedly.
Common Issues
- Engine oil consumption. The engine uses large amounts of oil, requiring multiple quarts within short driving distances and sometimes showing no oil on the dipstick.
- Engine failure. One complaint describes a hole in the bottom of the engine housing approximately 2 by 2 inches, causing complete engine failure.
- Sliding door latching failure. The sliding mini van doors often fail to latch when closed, particularly the driver’s side power sliding door.
- Sliding door opening unexpectedly. Sliding doors have opened on their own while parked, with reports of this also happening during driving.
Six recalls affect the 2019 KIA SEDONA involving various safety systems such as airbags and seat belts. These recalls address electrical and installation defects that could compromise occupant protection and vehicle safety.
Recalls
- Air Bag Control Unit. Recall 22V031000 affects 410,619 vehicles. A cover inside the unit can damage a memory chip on the circuit board, potentially deactivating airbags in a crash which increases injury risk. Dealers will inspect and update software or replace the unit for free. Owner notification began March 21, 2022.
- Rear seat belt buckle. Recall 19V207000 covers 197 vehicles with 8-passenger seating. The second-row middle seat belt buckle may be improperly installed on the wrong side, preventing proper use of the 3-point belt and increasing injury risk. Dealers will inspect and reinstall the buckle free of charge. Recall started April 8, 2019.
Owners facing repeated engine repairs, door malfunctions, or unresolved recall issues may want to review their rights under state lemon laws. These laws provide protections for consumers dealing with persistent defects and safety concerns. Consulting a legal professional can help determine eligibility based on individual circumstances.

AIR BAGS
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2017-2019 Sedona, Soul, Soul EV, 2017-2018 Forte, and 2017 Forte Koup vehicles. The Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) cover may contact a memory chip on the printed circuit board and damage the electrical circuit. Circuit damage may result in deactivated air bags that will not deploy in a crash.
Risk: Air bags that do not deploy as intended can increase the risk of injury in a crash.

SEAT BELTS: REAR/OTHER:BUCKLE ASSEMBLY
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2019 Sedona vehicles equipped with an 8-passenger seat arrangement. The seat belt buckle for the second-row middle seat may have been improperly installed on the wrong side of the seat, preventing the proper use of the 3-point seat belt. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
Risk: A seat belt that cannot be properly used increases the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

When using the power sliding doors, specifically the driver's side, it will not close and latch 100% of the time. It usually beeps and indicates it has not closed and has to be manually closed but on two occasions has opened on it's own. Fortunately it's been while parked, which poses a whole different issue, but I've read that others are having this happen while driving.

Sliding mini van doors fail to latch when closing. This is a well known and documented problem. The NHTSA has issued remedies for the previous year but not this one.

The engine seems to be burning oil. After my last oil change, I had to replace three quarts of oil after driving 2,500 miles. Once previously, the engine oil got dangerously low (no oil showing on dipstick) even without the vehicle giving any indication of low oil. This could lead to engine failure while operating the vehicle, which could have disastrous consequences.
