2022 KIA NIRO EV Complaints and Recall Information
The 2022 KIA NIRO EV has 3 complaints and 2 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues with the reduction motor and axle failures. Multiple repairs related to these components occurred within the first 40,000 miles and under warranty. One owner reported being charged $5,800 for a recurring reduction motor repair after warranty expiration.
Common Issues
- Reduction motor failure. Owners report the reduction motor failing around 40,000 miles, requiring replacement. The same issue recurred after the initial repair, leading to costly out-of-warranty repairs.
- Axle part breakage. Both front wheels experienced axle part failures within two years of ownership. Dealers noted that the part usually breaks only from strong impacts such as accidents, making these failures unusual.
There are 2 recalls affecting the 2022 KIA NIRO EV. They involve the high voltage battery safety plug and the rearview camera system. The defects relate to safety risks including potential fire hazards and reduced rear visibility.
Recalls
- High voltage battery safety plug. (NHTSA Recall 24V358000) Approximately 2,209 vehicles are affected by a defect where the safety plug can overheat and melt. This may cause loss of drive power or fire, increasing crash and injury risk. Dealers will replace the safety plug free of charge. Owners are advised not to charge inside garages or covered areas until repair. Notification letters were mailed July 19, 2024.
- Rearview camera system. (NHTSA Recall 25V426000) About 11,327 vehicles are impacted by damage to the rearview camera circuit board, causing the image to fail to display. The defect causes noncompliance with federal visibility standards and increases crash risk. Dealers will replace the rearview camera free of charge. Interim notification letters were mailed August 19, 2025, with final remedies forthcoming.
Owners with repeated problems involving critical components or ongoing recall repairs might have rights under their state lemon law. Those facing unresolved issues should consult appropriate legal resources to understand their options.

I bought my 2022 Kia Niro EV new in 2022, and around 40,000 miles, I had a problem with the reduction motor so I replaced it, shortly after that I had a problem with the wheel so I replaced a part called the axle, and shortly after that, the other wheel had the same problem so I replaced the same part, and the Kia employee said that this part only breaks if there is a strong impact (traffic accident) so it's strange. All of this happened in less than 2 years but I had it covered under warranty so I got it fixed, but now the reduction motor problem that I had originally replaced has happened again and they are demanding $5,800 to repair it since it's out of warranty. I think this is unfair, and this is the first time I've had a car with this many problems in less than 3 years.
