2011 KEYSTONE AVALANCHE Complaints and Recall Information

The 2011 KEYSTONE AVALANCHE has 0 complaints and 6 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report no specific complaints. The recalls involve various components including axles, electrical systems, gas ovens, and fire extinguishers.

There are six recalls addressing multiple vehicle systems. The defects cover axle assembly cracks, electrical transfer switch failures, propane gas leaks from ovens, and fire extinguishers that may fail to discharge properly or cause injury.

Recalls
  • Axle assembly. NHTSA recall 10V413000 affects 322 vehicles manufactured between August 19 and September 1, 2010. Cracks can form in the spindle weld causing the spindle to detach and the wheel end to separate from the vehicle. This creates a road hazard and increases crash risk. Dealers will inspect the axle serial numbers and replace defective axles free of charge.
  • Electrical system transfer switch. Recall 10V594000 includes 6297 vehicles with generator ready options. Improper installation can cause overheating of the transfer switch lugs leading to fire. Dealers will inspect and replace the transfer switch if needed at no charge. This recall was superseded by 11V577000.
  • Oven gas line fracture. Recall 10V478000 covers 5459 vehicles equipped with Atwood 35 series range ovens. A fracture in the gas line delivering propane to the oven burner can result in gas leaks. The leaks increase the risk of fire or explosion. Dealers will test and replace leaking oven supply tubes free of charge.
  • Oven gas line fracture expansion. Recall 11V064000 expands the previous oven gas line recall to 318 additional vehicles. The defect and fix are the same. Dealers will perform drop pressure tests and replace faulty tubes at no cost.
  • Transfer switch revision. Recall 11V577000 involves 6101 vehicles from 2009 to 2011 with generator options. Iota ITS-50R transfer switches fail under high electrical load, causing overheating and wiring damage. This creates fire and injury risks as well as appliance damage. Dealers will replace the transfer switch free of charge. This recall updated remedy actions from recall 10V594000.
  • Fire extinguisher malfunction. Recall 17V755000 affects over 1.2 million Keystone and other brand recreational trailers from 2003-2018. Kidde plastic-handle or push-button fire extinguishers may clog or require excessive force to activate. Nozzle detachment can cause injury and prevent operation. Owners will be notified to obtain replacement extinguishers from Kidde at no cost.

Owners facing repeated repairs or unresolved recall issues related to safety defects may have rights under their state’s lemon law. They should review their repair history and consider consultation with an attorney if defects persist after recall remedies.

Keystone RV Company (Keystone) is recalling various 2003-2018 Crossroads, Dutchmen, and Keystone recreational trailers equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V755-5127.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or excessive force may be needed to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf

Risk: In the event of a fire, if the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

KEYSTONE HAS REVISED THEIR REMEDY PROCESS AND IS AGAIN RECALLING CERTAIN 2009-2011 VEHICLES WITH THE “GENERATOR READY” OPTION, OR WITH STANDARD GENERATOR. SEE THE LIST ABOVE FOR THE AFFECTED MODELS. SOME IOTA ITS-50R TRANSFER SWITCHES ARE EXPERIENCING FAILURES WHEN EXPOSED TO HIGH ELECTRICAL LOADS. THE FAILURE IS CAUSING CONNECTIONS AND WIRING IN THE TRANSFER SWITCH TO DEGRADE AND OVER HEAT.

Risk: CONTINUED USE OF THE VEHICLE WITHOUT REPLACING THE TRANSFER SWITCH MAY DAMAGE OTHER APPLIANCES, INCREASE THE RISK OF A FIRE, PERSONAL INJURY, AND PROPERTY DAMAGE.

EQUIPMENT

KEYSTONE IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2011 AVALANCHE, LAREDO, AND SPRINGDALE RECREATIONAL VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ATWOOD 35 SERIES RANGE OVENS. A POTENTIAL EXISTS FOR A SMALL FRACTURE WITHIN THE LINE DELIVERING GAS TO THE OVEN CAVITY BURNER. SUCH A FRACTURE MAY CAUSE PROPANE GAS TO LEAK FROM THE LINE.

Risk: A PROPANE LEAK IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE COULD RESULT IN A FIRE AND/OR EXPLOSION CAUSING PROPERTY DAMAGE AND/OR PERSONAL INJURY.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

KEYSTONE IS RECALLING CERTAIN FIFTH WHEEL TRAILERS WITH A GENERATOR READY OPTION. IF THE TRANSFER SWITCH IS NOT INSTALLED TO THE PROPER SPECIFICATIONS, THE ELEVATED ELECTRICAL LOADS ASSOCIATED WITH THE RECREATIONAL VEHICLE USE IN HIGHER AMBIENT TEMPERATURES MAY CAUSE OVERHEATING OF THE LUGS AND DEGRADING OF THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS.

Risk: OVERHEATING OF THE CONNECTIONS COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.

POWER TRAIN:AXLE ASSEMBLY

KEYSTONE IS RECALLING CERTAIN 2011 ALPINE, AVALANCHE, FUZION, LAREDO, MONTANA, AND MOUNTAINEER FIFTH WHEEL TRAILERS MANUFACTURED FROM AUGUST 19, 2010 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 1, 2010, EQUIPPED WITH DEXTER AXLES. ON SOME AXLES, CRACKS COULD APPEAR IN THE SPINDLE WELD.

Risk: THESE CRACKS CAN PROPAGATE AND CAUSE THE SPINDLE TO DETACH FROM THE AXLE TUBE, RESULTING IN THE SEPARATION OF THE WHEEL END FROM THE VEHICLE, CREATING A ROAD HAZARD THAT INCREASES THE RISK OF A CRASH TO OTHER VEHICLES, AND COMPROMISES THE DRIVER'S CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
