2019 KENWORTH T680 Complaints and Recall Information

The 2019 KENWORTH T680 has 1 complaint and 10 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues with the transmission, including a transmission fault error that causes the vehicle to stop unexpectedly on highways. Drivers state the truck changes gears erratically and maintains high RPMs before shutting down and restarting normally, suggesting possible widespread failure of the MTM and transmission components.

Common Issues

  • Transmission fault error. The transmission fault indicator activates while driving, causing the truck to stop unexpectedly on the highway.
  • Erratic gear changes. The vehicle shifts gears improperly and keeps engine RPMs high, disrupting normal operation.
  • Transmission failure. Reports indicate the MTM component failure destroys the transmission, necessitating full transmission replacement.

The 2019 KENWORTH T680 is subject to 10 recalls addressing various systems including braking, steering, engine, electrical wiring, and lighting. These recalls affect safety-critical components such as air brakes, steering fasteners, parking brakes, electronic stability control, and diesel engine fuel lines. Repairs typically involve part replacement or software updates performed at no cost to owners.

Recalls

  • Air brake reservoirs (NHTSA 24V145000). Affected 996 vehicles have air tanks with insufficient volume, reducing braking performance. Dealers will install correct volume air tanks free of charge.
  • Steering fasteners (NHTSA 22V277000). Dana D-Series steer arm fasteners may fail on 17,641 trucks, risking loss of steering control. Dealers will replace and torque fasteners at no cost.
  • Parking brake pressure switch (NHTSA 19V275000). On 1,837 trucks, delayed park brake signal during cold weather may cause unexpected vehicle movement. Repair involves pressure switch replacement free of charge.
  • Electrical wiring for methane detection (NHTSA 21V00N000). Wiring defect on 1,107 trucks disables methane detection system if power is lost, increasing injury or fire risk. Dealers will re-wire the warning alarm at no cost.
  • Rear brake ABS modulator valve (NHTSA 20V593000). Affected 1,416 trucks have modulator valves causing delayed brake release, lengthening stopping distance. Dealers will replace with quick release valves without charge.
  • Electronic Stability Control software (NHTSA 20V199000). Over 460,000 trucks may operate without ABS warning light functioning after power loss, increasing crash risk. Dealers will update NAMUX software free of charge.
  • Diesel engine fuel pump cooling circuit (NHTSA 18V657000). On 48,896 trucks, restricted cooling screen may cause fuel line bursts and engine stalls in certain driving conditions. Dealers will replace the cooling circuit screen at no cost.
  • Clutch assembly internal failure (NHTSA 18V931000). A defect on 25,556 trucks with automated manual transmissions may cause unintended vehicle movement. Dealers will update transmission control software free of charge.
  • Exterior side marker lamps (NHTSA 18V816000). On 1,619 trucks, missing reflex reflectors reduce vehicle visibility. Dealers will install reflex reflective tape at no charge.

Owners dealing with repeated transmission failures or safety-related recall issues may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Those with ongoing problems involving safety defects or unresolved recalls should consider consulting legal resources for potential remedies.

POWER TRAIN

When I was driving on the highway the transmission fault error came on and my truck came to a stop on on the highway. It changed gears weirdly and kept the rpm’s high. Once it came to a stop I turned the truck off and on and it work fine. This has happened multiple times and a nationwide failure of the MTM and transmission is the cause of this. Many of my fellow drivers are having this same issues and are having to replace the whole transmission due to the MTM failing and destroying the transmission.
