Common Issues
  • Rear control arm fracture. Rear lower control arms fracture due to corrosion, leading to damage to the rear axle and loss of vehicle control while driving.
  • Front lower ball joint failure. Front lower ball joints fracture or detach from the spindle causing abnormal noises and unintended lowering of the vehicle front end.
  • Vehicle skidding incidents. Skidding occurs spontaneously during normal driving, often linked to suspension component failures without warning lights.
  • Fuel pump malfunction. Gas pump repeatedly spits fuel back during refueling, creating a safety concern at gas stations.

There are 5 recalls affecting the 2006 JEEP LIBERTY with defects involving rear suspension, fuel system, clutch switch, and structural components. These recalls address control arm fractures, fuel tank vulnerability in rear impacts, clutch pedal switch failures, and related safety risks.

Recalls
  • Rear suspension control arm. (NHTSA 12V085000) Approximately 346,900 vehicles affected. Recalled due to rear lower control arms fracturing from corrosion caused by road salts, increasing crash risk. Dealers replace rear lower control arms free of charge. Recall began March 26, 2012.
  • Fuel tank and rear structure. (NHTSA 13V252000) About 1,560,000 vehicles affected including 2006 Jeep Liberty. Fuel tanks risk failure and leakage in rear impacts potentially causing fire. Dealers inspect rear structures and install or replace Chrysler-designed tow hitches to mitigate puncture risks. Recall began August 1, 2014.
  • Clutch pedal position switch. (NHTSA 15V222000) Around 43,939 vehicles affected. Springs inside clutch pedal switch may break causing the vehicle not to start properly or lurch unexpectedly, increasing crash risk. Dealers replace the clutch ignition interlock switch free of charge. Recall began August 31, 2015.
  • Rear suspension control arm expansion. (NHTSA 18V278000) Affected 239,904 vehicles not included in recall 12V085000. Rear lower control arms can fracture due to corrosion leading to loss of vehicle control. Dealers replace faulty control arms free of charge. Recall began June 26, 2018.

Owners with repeated suspension failures, safety defects, or unresolved recall repairs may have rights under their state’s lemon law. Consulting with a qualified attorney familiar with automotive defects is advisable in such cases.

SUSPENSION

I was driving down the freeway at 70 mph, and suddenly my car (2006 Jeep Liberty) felt as if the rear end was dragging and I began to lose control of my vehicle. The icy Michigan conditions were no help, but thankfully the drivers surrounding me were attentive and moved out of the way until i was able to regain control and pull onto the shoulder. I had my vehicle towed to a shop, where i was informed the rear control arm had fractured and in turn damaged the rear axle. I found out there was a recall for this EXACT problem on my car, a blessing because my family is struggling very badly financially. BUT, Chrysler says my vehicle's VIN is not listed on the recall and it is not their problem. Not only is this extremely dangerous for all drivers of these effected vehicles, but my kids missed school today because I don't have a functioning vehicle. Manufacturers need to be held accountable and publicly announce ALL VEHICLES THAT COULD BE EFFECTED, not whichever number of vehicles pleases public relations.
