2004 JEEP LIBERTY Complaints and Recall Information

The 2004 JEEP LIBERTY has 5 complaints and 5 recalls filed with NHTSA. Owners most frequently report issues with the suspension components, particularly the ball joints and control arms, leading to steering and control problems. Tire vibrations and problems with the tire pressure monitoring system are also commonly reported.

Common Issues
  • Lower ball joint failure. Drivers report broken lower ball joints causing the steering wheel to collapse and loss of vehicle control, sometimes requiring tow service and suspension repairs.
  • Control arm fractures. Front and rear control arms have broken or corroded, leading to dangerous handling and potential crash risk.
  • Tire vibration. Tires vibrate or pulse at various speeds, sometimes accompanied by grinding noises when braking.
  • Tire sidewall damage. Some tires develop thin sidewalls independent of wear, contributing to unsafe driving conditions.
  • TPMS warning light illumination. The tire pressure monitoring system light frequently activates despite new tires and sensors.
  • Vehicle pulling. Excessive pulling to one side during driving, creating unsafe operation concerns.

There are 5 recalls affecting different systems primarily related to suspension and fuel system safety. The suspension recalls address rear lower control arm fractures caused by corrosion and front hub installation errors. The fuel system recalls concern potential fuel tank leakage and fire risk in rear impacts. Recall repairs typically involve part replacement or inspection at no charge.

Recalls
  • Rear suspension lower control arms. (NHTSA 12V085000) Affects 346,900 vehicles including 2004 Jeep Liberty. Control arms can fracture from corrosion due to road salts. Fracture can cause loss of control and crash. Dealers replace rear lower control arms free of charge. No "Do Not Drive" advisory applies.
  • Front wheel hubs. (NHTSA 12E047000) Affects 892 vehicles with non-formed wheel hubs incorrectly installed on 4x2 Jeep Liberty models. Missing axle nuts can cause front wheel separation and increase crash risk. Timken replaces hubs free of charge. No Do Not Drive advisory.
  • Fuel tank and rear structure. (NHTSA 13V252000) Covers 1,560,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee (1993-1998) and Liberty (2002-2007) vehicles. Fuel tank may leak in rear impacts causing fire risk. Dealers inspect and install tow hitch or assess aftermarket hitches free of charge. No Do Not Drive advisory.
  • Rear suspension control arms follow-up. (NHTSA 18V278000) Covers 239,904 Jeep Liberty vehicles from 2004-2007. Similar corrosion-caused fractures as 12V085000 recall but excludes vehicles already repaired under the earlier recall. Dealers replace control arms free. No Do Not Drive advisory.

Owners dealing with repeated suspension failures or safety recall repairs that remain unresolved may want to review their rights under state lemon laws. Persistent vehicle control issues and incomplete recall service can affect safety and vehicle reliability.

SUSPENSION:REAR

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2004-2007 Jeep Liberty vehicles. The rear suspension lower control arms can fracture due to excessive corrosion, causing a loss of vehicle control.

Risk: A fractured control arm can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY

Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 1993-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2002-2007 Jeep Liberty vehicles. The fuel tanks in these vehicles are at risk of failure and leakage in certain rear impacts.

Risk: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire.

SUSPENSION:FRONT:HUB

Timken is recalling certain non-formed, front wheel hubs, part number HA599467, which were sold to retail and automotive distributors in the automobile aftermarket as front wheel hub replacements designed only for use on certain 2002 through 2005, 4X4, non-ABS, Jeep Liberty vehicles. These front wheel hub units can be mistakenly sold to owners and installed on 4X2 versions of the Jeep vehicles.

Risk: If the non-formed hub unit is installed on a Jeep Liberty 4x2 model (which does not use an axle nut for hub retention), the vehicle wheel will not be secure and a front wheel separation may occur, increasing the risk of a crash.

SUSPENSION

I was going around a corner when it felt like a cinder block was under it. I stopped and looked but it wouldn't go and the driver's wheel was slumped where you couldn't drive it. I called the tow truck and had it towed to get it fixed. The Lower Ball Joint and control arm had to be replaced on both sides in the front. It was going to happen on the passenger side also. If I would have been on the freeway my car would have flipped and I wouldn't have survived. The back tires had a recall on them that I had done. Also the upper Ball joints had to be replaced.
