2020 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2019 Ram 1500 and 2014-2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles equipped with 3.0L Diesel engines. The crankshaft position sensor tone wheel may delaminate, causing the engine to lose its ability to synchronize the fuel injector pulses and cam shaft timing, possibly resulting in an engine stall.

Risk: An engine stall can increase the risk of a crash.

Electronic stability and 4wd lights came on. Brought to dealership and the PTU is no longer working. My car is vibrating and hesitating when accelerating. Jeep dealer told me it’s common to have to replace these units however they are nationally back ordered. My car doesn’t even have 60k miles on it and even if I want to fix my car so it’s safe I can’t because the parts are backordered leaving me with no other choice but to drive for months months unsafely without a properly functioning PTU

STEERING

Component/System: Electrical Power Steering (EPS) – steering cuts in and out while driving. Vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Safety Risk: My safety and the safety of others were put at risk because the steering intermittently fails, making the vehicle very difficult to control. This could easily cause an accident. Reproduction/Inspection: The issue has been reproduced multiple times while driving. The vehicle previously had an engine replacement at Bayird Dodge Chrysler Jeep in West Memphis, AR (now closed), but this steering problem remains unresolved. Manufacturer/Dealer Involvement: The original dealership is no longer in business, so I cannot return there for service. I have contacted Jeep/Stellantis Customer Care to request assistance. Warning Lamps/Messages: The EPS warning light has appeared during failures. The problem first appeared in [insert approximate date/month you noticed it]. It was a clear day as I arrived at work. While pulling into a parking spot, the Jeep suddenly accelerated over a curb and into a tree. I was able to turn the wheel upon seeing the tree, which helped me avoid hitting other vehicles on the opposite side of the island. I had to depress the brakes multiple times before the vehicle finally stopped just short of another tree. During the incident, I was on a conference call. The attendees confirmed that there were no warning sounds from the vehicle—only the sound of the impact. Notably, the airbags did not deploy. The front driver-side area sustained extensive damage, causing the driver’s door to jam. Fortunately, I did not suffer any physical injuries. The vehicle was towed to an auto body repair shop. When connected to a scanner, no error codes were detected. Repairs took nearly five weeks. Although the front sensors were replaced, they still did not function properly. The shop consulted a technician who remoted in and advised them to replace all the sensors again and inspect the wiring. Although the vehicle has been repaired, I remain fearful of driving it. This should be a recall and they need to fix it I only had this vehicle for less then 5yrs brand new, when I started having these issues and can put me in a situation on the highway where I can get into a server accident. Transmission, available upon request for inspection. Clunk’s into reverse, or doesn’t engage at all. Code p1da8, p0733. Has been confirmed by dealer. Will throw check engine light occasionally. Also shifts hard between gears 3 and 4.

Radio camera is feeezing when in reverse and saftey isn’t working … radio randomly shuts off and turns on … won’t allow any functions to work when it’s frozen including camera and backup safety assist

ENGINE

Camshaft and lifter failure at 52,102 miles on Pentastar V6 Motor. This has been a known issue to this motor and no recalls. My vehicle is with the mechnic getting fixed. My vehicle was not drivable after diagnostics at my mechanic. I had potential for enfgine failure due to metal on metal camshaft. I was at risk of serious injury if I did not take my vehile in. There were no check engie lights to alert me of an issue. I noticed a slight ticking noise that was not normal. Could not be heard over the radio. Yes this problem has been reproduced at my independant service center. It has not been inspected to my knowledge by the manufacturer, police, insurance other than my mechanic. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symbols prior to my failure other than a noise I noticed when my radio was off that was not normal.

Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while attempting to register the vehicle, it was discovered that there was a mileage discrepancy. The vehicle was a private sale. At the time of purchase, the vehicle mileage was 67,000 and at the time of registration, it was discovered that the mileage was 237,277.

POWER TRAIN

At approximately 54,000 miles the transmission is not shifting. I parked in a parking spot, go into a store. Then come out and the vehicle will not shift into park or reverse. The check engine light came on for the park by wire issue. These transmissions have been known to have rough shifting and my vehicle has been no exception. It’s shifted rough at low speeds and the eco mode and auto start/stop system have also made it feel less than smooth to drive.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

There is a common issue with WK2 Jeeps from 17-22 where the infotainment screen delaminates due to the adhesive that Jeep used and eventually causes the touchscreen to become non-functional.

AIR BAGS

The contact owned a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at 30 MPH, another vehicle pulled out in front of his vehicle, causing him to T-bone the vehicle on the front driver side. No air bags deployed. The contact stated he and his girlfriend sustained injuries to their backs and his left ankle, knee, and wrist, and bruises on his chest and ribs due to impact. Medical attention was sought via the emergency room. A police report was filed. The failure was not diagnosed by a dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle was towed to an auto body shop and deemed a total loss. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and they informed him that a case manager will contact him. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

Display for backup camera, radio & climate control is delaminating. Display stops functioning at points and needs to reset. Seal for display has been compromised, so the unit will stop functioning soon. It will have to be replaced.

The contact owns a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the leather on the dashboard had started to peel and separate from the dashboard. The contact stated that the A/C vents were the only parts holding the leather intact; however, the leather could be removed if it was touched. The contact stated that the failure had caused a distraction while driving. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who referred the contact to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and acknowledged that the failure was a known defect; however, there was no recall or extended warranty for the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Front passenger HID headlight on 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit V8, 45,000 miles. Yes How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Went out while driving at night, making it difficult to adequately see. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, it seems to be a known problem with these particular type of lights. I had a 2015 and it had the exact same issue. But before it was adequately diagnosed by the dealer, both headlights were affected and the fix was to replace the entire headlight assembly and replacement was quoted ~ $5000. I currently have the exact same model but 2020 and as of 6/18/25, it is starting to have the same issue. I called the dealer yesterday, 6/19, and was told that the lights are known not to last. If this is a "known" issue than why has Jeep continued to use the same lights putting people at risk at having headlights go out while driving???? Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No, I immediately noticed my drive was darker and visibility was difficult in the dark.

ENGINE

[XXX] Utility 4D Altitude 4WD 3.6L V6 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee My 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine check engine light came on at 115,000 miles with a P0305 code. The P0305 code for a 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine indicates a misfire in cylinder number five. The week prior I performed a coolant flush and fill with the proper Mopar coolant. A few days later the water pump weep hole started leaking. I replaced the water pump and changed the spark plugs. A few days after this was when the P0305 check engine light came on and I could feel the engine starting to stumble from the misfire. No indication of overheating, coolant temperature was normal between 180 F and 210 F. I kept checking the coolant level and noticed the level dropping after a few days. There was no indication of a coolant leak after replacing the water pump. No coolant in the oil, or oil in the coolant and no white cloud from the exhaust from the coolant leaking into the combustion chamber, typically caused by a blown head gasket, cracked head or block or warped head or block. I set an appointment at the Jeep service department, and they informed me the engine had to be replaced. They said they did a bore scope test and a leak down test to confirmed the coolant was leaking into the cylinder. There are hundreds if not thousands of reports from other owners of Jeep Grand Cherokee and other Jeep, Chrysler, Ram, Dodge owners reporting this same issue. The attached photos show no coolant mixing with the or oil mixing with the coolant, resulting in the coolant only leaking through the combustion chamber to the exhaust confirming the service departments findings. ENGINE

The transmission went out in October 2024 and was replaced in November 2024. Since then, the valve body has been replaced twice and probably needs to be replaced again. The car does not shift into/out of third gear properly or consistently which causes very delayed acceleration. This is a safety hazard when entering the roadway, especially merging onto the highway. Chrysler is aware of the valve body being “bad” yet continues to “replace” with bad parts.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

UConnect system is delaminating and experiencing “phantom” touches, often not allowing me to access things needed and choosing to do whatever it wants. This makes me unable to access “hands-free” via Bluetooth connection, etc., which creates safety issues. It also creates serious safety issues when the unit overrides driver choices, and is also distracting as the unit beeps and switches back and forth among options. This is a widespread issue that Jeep knows about and continues to leave good people to pay thousands of dollars to replace or just be out MANY features on this vehicle that all go through the system. This makes MUCH of this vehicle obsolete.

During the incident, no injuries were reported, a police report was taken the next morning, and the vehicle was towed to a nearby towing facility. The vehicle was later examined by an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the failure was caused by a computer malfunction. No further information was available. SEAT BELTS

I have owned 2 Jeep Grand Cherokees before this 2020 model and never had issues with seatbelts. After just five years, the driver's side seatbelt is not retracting and the passenger side is starting to do the same. I asked Jeep for assistance and I was told this was something I will have to pay for out of pocket. I have seen that many others have complained of the same issue online. I went to a dealer and the seatbelt part is on backorder for almost two weeks. Just ONE seatbelt will cost me almost $600 out of pocket. Jeep is surely playing with fire with this issue. I can't imagine what they will have to deal with if someone is injured due to the seatbelts not working properly, after just 5 years of buying a new car. Shame on them. POWER TRAIN

While traveling Vehicle intermittent hard shifts, or no shifts, goes into neutral unexcitingly, sometimes no reverse. SES light on. 77,278 miles Dealer advised stored code - TCM P0733-00 Gear 3 Shift Incorrect Ratio. Dealer also advised vehicle needs Transmission replaced, Repair estimate $5970.28 Previous issues include ABS system repair and engine coil pack issue.

ENGINE

While I was attempting to pass a vehicle on a two-lane highway, my engine started misfiring and I lost engine power and it almost caused a head-on accident. The engine had to be replaced because the camshaft was worn on bank 1 and after doing some research there seems to be a lot of issues with this engine and the rocker arms which wears the camshaft down. There was a lot of metal in my engine which caused them to have to replace it. I researched recalls and there is nothing but after speaking with the dealership they confirmed that there is a known issue with this engine.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

The interior wood trim on the driver's side door pealed away and broke. There are other recalls related to the same door trim that is pealing away like X77.

I am writing to bring to your attention a matter of significant concern regarding my recent visit to your service center on April 22, 2025, for a scheduled appointment to replace the driver's side rim and two front tires. Upon post-service inspection of my vehicle, I observed that the newly installed front tires were Bridgestone, rather than Ironman, which are consistent with the original rear tires. It appears that the service department took the liberty of replacing the front tires with more expensive Bridgestone models without prior consultation or my explicit approval. After addressing this issue with the service manager, the initial compensation offered was limited to a few complimentary oil changes and tire rotations. Subsequently, the manager contacted me with an offer of one new Bridgestone tire for the rear, contingent upon my purchase of the other tire. I declined this offer, having recently invested approximately $4,000 in various services and brake work. In a third communication, the manager proposed to provide new front tires to match the existing rear tires. These fluctuating offers have left me perplexed and frustrated, as I lack both the financial resources and time to engage in such negotiations. I regret to inform you that I find this resolution unsatisfactory, given the unexpected change in tire brand and the associated increase in cost. This situation has caused considerable inconvenience and warrants a more appropriate resolution. EXTERIOR LIGHTING

Had to replace headlight then it went back out shortly after. The following week the other side went out. I looked it up and it showed that there were recalls for this problem. But am being told there is no recall on my vehicle for this.

POWER TRAIN

Transmission needs fully replaced, certified technician said the see this all the time in these Jeeps. Dealership said they had to replace one at 56k miles, this car has 85k miles, well taken care of. Research shows this is a very common issue. Jeep needs to cover these transmissions and recall!

Transmission system failed causing slipping when going into 3rd gear. Dealership inspected it and is telling me the output shaft has to be replaced. The check engine light came on when it started slipping.

UNKNOWN. Electronic Stability Control service light activated intermittently for a couple days along with the 4WD service light. After 2-3 days, the ESC light remained lit. Twice when starting the vehicle, the 4WD low was activated without manually shifting gears, in which changed to normal within a minute later. Intermittently, when the vehicle braked to a stop and switched gears to reverse, the vehicle shuttered before continuing in reverse. Another incident while driving and coming to a stop at a traffic light, upon coming to a stop, the vehicle seemed to almost stall but reengage. The vehicle is at approximately 41,500 miles as of 4/1/2025. The vehicle was taken to a Dodge dealership in which report the transfer case needed repair. With under 50,000 miles and utilizing the 4WD only approximately 4 times within the 5 years of ownership with no issue, the transfer case may be faulty or a software update needs to be performed.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Water pump continues to have leak. I have replaced the water pump 3 times in the past year.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

This is a known problem with Jeep. Service Shifter error message. I have had this repaired 3x and no one can seem to fix it. The car only has 50k miles on it. There are tons of message board stating that Jeep has a serious issue with their shifter module. Please get Jeep to do something about this.

POWER TRAIN

Car running fine no indication there was a problem, no lights on dashboard or sound. Jeep stalled on highway and engine light came on. Shut car off completely turned it back on and able to move to a safe location. Turned off car again for some time and when turned back on shift gear will not move into drive, reverse neutral. Needed to get it towed to mechanic who diagnosed it as a failed transmission at 88,000 miles. Towed to dealer who confirmed failed transmission. Was able to get cost assistance through jeep for 70 percent of cost but see the recent recalls on jeep because of transmission I feel it should have been a total replacement especially at u der 100,000 miles

My vehicle started flashing my seatbelt light when I was driving and I was buckled and then my airbag light came on and my automatic start and stop light came on and have stayed on. I took it into Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram and they charged me $203 to tell me that I don’t have any shorts in the seatbelt wire harness and they found a O.L (over limit) indicating that I have a internal open within the seat, buckle itself,causing the codes and the lights on the dash and that it’ll cost $541.26 to fix and it is not covered under any warranty, even though I just purchased the vehicle eight months ago and I’m under the 100,000 miles and just approaching the first 5 years. I should be covered. Now my airbags will not work and neither will my auto on and off features. This is a safety concern that should have a recall on it or be covered by Mopar.

Additionally, the temperature gauge raised abnormally and was almost indicating that the engine was hot(H). The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The contact stated that the engine was previously replaced due to the same failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.

We were able to pull over to the side of the road safely and as we were getting out of the vehicle, we noticed flames shooting out from under the engine. My wife and I made it out safely and as we got about 100 yards away and looked back toward the vehicle, the entire front part of the vehicle was engulfed in flames. We sat along the side of the interstate and watched the vehicle burn for 20-25 minutes. We just had the vehicle in for service 6 days prior to get a new battery, a new aux battery, an advanced diagnostic, brake fluid exchange, and a fuel system service. The evening we picked up the vehicle from service, we got an email with a powertrain alert indicator. We then checked the app on the phone and everything in the powertrain section of the vehicle health report was green. I have several videos of the vehicle burning but it doesn't look like I can upload a video file.

Air bag sensor went off, took it to the dealer and they said it could be a loose wire. I do not feel safe driving the vehicle since there has been a recall for prior models due to a faulty sensor which could cause the airbags to malfunction in case of an accident. Also having problems with the screen delaminating.

Well, the leather upgraded dash boards once removed from the car are more receptive to bubbling up and causing an interference to the effective operation of the airbags. Again, the dealership didn't disclose this or how the repair was completed, how it could impact the critical safety features of the vehicle, and they have declined any responsibility of potentially causing additional safety issues when reparing their know defect.

Service shifter light comes on, sometimes it makes the engine light come on and a message appears that says to safely stop the vehicle and put into park. Doing some research on this myself no help from Jeep I found that this could cause the tires to lock up because your Jeep thinks it was put into park as your driving causing a severe accident especially if your on the highway. I also found that you can stall instantly. Imagine having children in your vehicle on the highway and your Jeep just dies. I feel like this is a very serious safety issue that needs to resolved by Jeep. I've had my Jeep brought to a Jeep dealership 3 times now. Currently there as we speak. They have done extensive work to what "may" be causing the issue. They are now chasing wires. I've paid $800. out of pocket and my warranty has covered about 3k in parts. Jeep has been contacted by the dealer with no help or guidance.

Spin engine over to top dead center cylinder three. Pressurized cooling system and find combustion in coolant. Suspect vehicle needs new head gasket." The mechanic said that is a manufacture defect that they have seen with many Jeep vehicles. I called Jeep to inquire, and they let me know that my VIN number is not included in an existing recall for this same issue. The suggested that I reach out to the NHTSB to ask that my car be included in the existing recall.

The gas pedal went to the floor without resistance and would not give any fuel to the engine. The lights were still on so I didn't lose power completely, but the engine was not responding. The recent recal 25V011000 sounds like what happened to my car, but the 2020 model is not included in the recall. I have taken it to the dealership, but they could not find anything wrong with it.
